To tell you how fantastic Lithuania is for a holiday?

We have just visited Vilnius (capital city of Lithuania) and wow! It's absolutely gorgeous. I wrongly expected it might be a tad grim as after all it's not that long ago that it gained independence from the Soviet Union. Not a bit of it. The historic centre is just lovely and the more modern parts nice too. Best of all, it's incredibly cheap compared to the UK in terms of accommodation, eating out (well everything really). Also cheap to fly to. If booked well in advance, air fares one way as little as £25 per person. What's not to like?

A little balance on the Museum of Genocide Victims, if anyone decides to visit. If you're interested in exploring the fate of Lithuanian Jews in the 20th century there are many sites of interest, sadly.

It may be that Lithuania's geographical position and history of invasions rumbling eastward and westward have contributed to a form of hyper nationalism that is understandable, but the idea that the evils of the 20th century came from outside Lithuania still persists and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

That being said, the Baltic states have much to offer for anyone looking for an off the beaten track and pretty much unspoiled location for a holiday.

Are there any flights from the north of England or Scotland?

It's not Eastern Europe. It's's one of the Baltic states.
