To ask what a classy tattoo is?

Ok, please don’t shoot me down this is an honest question from an obviously out of touch person. ( name changed obviously)
But what the hell do people mean when they say that a tattoo is classy or amazing art work??
I see them everywhere but have never seen anything that I would say was attaractive on flesh.
They are various degrees of quality of art work yes but classy nope.
On another thread people were saying they had high quality tattoos but what does that even look like? Surely to anyone judging a tattoo is a tattoo I e a permanent mark on your body?
I would assume people like David beckham and Robbie Williams must have the higher quality tattoos? Basic As they have the money ? But to many people they would be judged poorly in a few real life settings. I would not personally say I like the look.
Sorry but pondering the consequences of not being aware of a difference and wondering if judgments are being made on artwork quality Within the tattooed population and the non tattooed are just judging any tattoo?
Explane probably photos required here.
Sorry about typos struggling with iPad tonight

Clearly soapona is trying to prove just how classy she is on this post, and obviously just making us know in the process just what type she is.

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/07/2019 13:40

Its a shame she doesnt know what class actually is!

soapona · 13/07/2019 13:46

I don't think I'm particularly classy. I don't give a toss actually! I just make judgement as everyone does weather they are prepared to admit it or not.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2019 13:50

I don't think I'm particularly classy

You’re absolutely right.

bingbongnoise · 13/07/2019 13:57

@soapona

Ok but seriously why do people kid themselves they are not associated with more working class types. As for the person commenting that she has seen many Drs and paramedics with tattoos. I imagine plenty paramedics and nurses have them. Drs and consultants less so. As for the Art work and not appreciating it I come from a family of artists from both sides, so I'm related to gallery owners and artists who have exhibited in the Tate. They feel the same way as me about tattoos, you have to be really careful I know as people with tattoos get defensive. This however is a choice you are choosing to do this, it's not the same as a sexual orientation, disability or race. Lifestyle choices do not put you above any scrutiny. If you don't like judgement think before being a sheep. It's a fashion there is absolutely no doubt in my mind.

Agree with this totally, and I have no idea why @JoanMavisIcecreamGirl said this poster has a 'vile attitude.' It is simply a difference of opinion. Some people (like joan here,) are MASSIVELY defensive of tattoos... Prodding away at soapona, calling her vile and all sorts. Why so defensive and angry? Confused

If you are so secure in your choice, and think tattoos are amazing, then why are you so angry that people judge you for them? Confused People judge others for many things; I get judged by a few people for a few of my life choices. I don't care what they think, as I am happy with my choice.

Sounds like some people have some tattoo regret on here, and some posters are hitting a raw nerve. Wink

Personally, I really, REALLY dislike this ludicrous 'trend' for plastering yourself in tattoos, and I am entitled to that view, whether you like it or not.... I have seen many a young woman ruined by tattoos dotted here and there, randomly all over their arms and shoulders and their calves.

And yeah I think they DO look worse on women, (than they do on men,) so shoot me. That is my opinion. Call me what you like. IDGAF.......... And no I rarely see them all over middle class/upper middle class people/professionals... Even though SOME people claim they see it all the time! Wink

As a pp said, it's an absolute treat to see young women with no tattoos. The ones WITHOUT them look like the independent-thinking, free spirits; the ones WITH them do look like sheep unfortunately. And re; what a pp said, when I see brides with tattoos all over them, it makes me cringe super-hard... Wink

I have a friend who has a DD (I will call her Amy,) who had her first tattoo some 5 years ago, even though my friend asked her not to as she thinks they 'look awful ... ' Again, she is entitled to that opinion, whether people like it or not.

Amy then went on to have another 7 tattoos over 3-4 years. Just crappy ones dotted here and there. She is a beautiful young uni graduate, and the ink randomly sploshed all over her looks absolutely SHIT. Like many people with tattoos, she looks like a toddler has gone crazy with a set of felt tip pens on her skin!

I was with my friend and her DD Amy last week, and Amy said to my friend 'I am having at LEAST another ten tattoos mum, and there's NOTHING you can do about it!' with a sly, evil grin... My friend said 'I am seriously past caring now Amy. Do what you like. Whatever I think, you do what you want anyway,' and walked off.

Amy's face hit the floor as her mum walked off. She looked shocked and disappointed that her mum didn't care anymore.

Very telling. Wink

And the irony on this thread from a few posters (attacking other posters, - for their opinions on tattoos,) is hilarious! As I said, I wonder WHY they are so defensive? Wink

sqeakywheel · 13/07/2019 13:59

Most people have a tattoo because they want one for varying reasons. I don't think people choose them to be 'classy'. 'Classy' is a subjective concept anyway.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2019 14:03

Very telling

What do you assume imaginary Amy’s behaviour is telling you, just as a matter of interest?

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/07/2019 14:05

Why so defensive? Because i didnt think such small minded people existed anymore.

Fwiw i have 2 tattoos that arent visible in my everyday life so on first glimpse youd have no reason to judge me.

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/07/2019 14:06

All the winky faces make you seem like some kind of smug know it all. Its not up to you to say people have ruined their body. Thats one very small minded persons view. Not fact. Stop presenting it as one.

And i have no regrets either so next ridiculous assumption please.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2019 14:08

And no I rarely see them all over middle class/upper middle class people/professionals... Even though SOME people claim they see it all the time!

See what’s amusing is given my career path I have yet to have any issues whatsoever with my work because of my very visible tattoos. It really is only on MN people reckon they judge them so harshly, in reality my experience is very different.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 13/07/2019 14:23

"What do you assume imaginary Amy’s behaviour is telling you, just as a matter of interest?"

Well at a guess I would say, that her mother is ridiculously judgemental and thinks she has a right to judge her adult daughter's body and express her disapproval/disappointment about it? "Her mum doesn't care about her any more" speaks volumes, doesn't it? And that her friends mum is actually a shit friend (I wouldn't dream of speaking about my friends DC like this, in such a mean and hurtful manner).

I went with my DD for her first tattoo (she asked me to btw, not being pushy!) and no doubt some people here would judge me a shit mother! My main concern as a parent, was helping her to make a decision she would still be happy with in years to come. If I ever saw my DDs face look "shocked and disappointed" that "I didn't care about her anymore" because of a decision she had made about her own body, then I would genuinely feel I had been a shit mother.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 13/07/2019 14:41

I have tattoos but I wouldn't say a tattoo is a "classy" thing. They can be amazing art work, which is why I have them, but I'm under no illusion that my tattoos make me classy or that they are classy themselves. There is a big difference in a well done tattoo and a poorly done one though.

Topsecretidentity · 13/07/2019 14:44

I love rihanna's chest tattoo and her nefertiti one but dislike her hand one (in the pics).

I think a classy tattoo is a combination of the quality of the artwork, cohesiveness with body lines, subtlety of placement (face, neck and hands are a no for me) and colour (I don't like coloured tattoos unless they're tiny as they can look quite tacky). I don't have any tattoos myself as I've seen too many bad ones so don't want to risk it.

MockerstheFeManist · 13/07/2019 14:44

Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo?

soapona · 13/07/2019 14:47

There was a studying a few years back on the types of people who got tattoos. Low self esteem and impulsive were main factors. I also remember seeing a reference to being similar to self harm. It's pretty much what I said before and none of it surprising. I know as I spoke to a statistician about it at the time.

If you google psychiatrist care tattoos in women it will come up personality disorders, psychopathy or victim of child sexual abuse. Obviously I appreciate that many people with tattoos do not have these issue. There seems little doubt though psychiatrists make judgements and tattoos are a factor.

This is where I don't understand people who get tattoos. Why do you want people to judge you negatively? Why do criminals get them? They're so easily identified. You can't just be a social butterfly and fit into any company the same way people without tattoos can. There are still jobs you can't get with tattoos, yet people still do it. Then get angry when you discuss what are the contributing factor to this "body art"?

Ghanagirl · 13/07/2019 14:50

I don’t there’s any such thing

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/07/2019 14:52

I am not sure anyone gets tatoos with tjis intention Shock

Why do criminals get them? They're so easily identified

Same reason non crims do i suppose. I imagine they dont consider the impact it has on their anonymity.

You can't just be a social butterfly and fit into any company the same way people without tattoos can

Yes you can. Nobody knows i have tattoos unless i tell them or am in my underwear.

There are still jobs you can't get with tattoos, yet people still do it

Like what? Id like to see an interviewer ask me to strip off before offering me one of these jobs.

Ohbehave1 · 13/07/2019 14:52

Yawn. The same old fools that don't like them moaning. If you don't like them you don't have one. And it makes no difference to the persons ability to be a parent/employee/anything.

Just another goady thread to get the haters out.

mpsw · 13/07/2019 14:55

"There are still jobs you can't get with tattoos, yet people still do it."

Wondering which these might be, as the military dropped its ban some time ago. And officers have always got away with it.

Aristocracy and really upper class have them ( couple of kings, Prince Albert, several current royals). It really does seem to be only the middle classes who get all angsty about it.

Theghosttrain · 13/07/2019 14:56

I'd never have one, people do judge, however mainstream they are now. One other thing, when people on this thread are talking about discrete (as in separate and individual) tattoos, is that what they mean, or do they mean discreet ones? I'm curious.

VampirateQueen · 13/07/2019 14:57

I have 3 tattoos and I love each one. They each mean something to me. I did book for another one, but the design was one I picked on the spur of the moment and the more I thought about it the more unhappy I became, so cancelled the appointment. Each one I do have represents a part of me and my personality, I have had them over 10 years now and still love them.
A classy tattoo is what you interpret, if you don't like them, then none of them are, but for some people it could be a small delicate one, or a full sleeve with lots of work put in.

MindyStClair · 13/07/2019 15:13

I’m not sure if I’ll ever get a tattoo, but if I do it’ll be one by Rebecca Vincent - I think she does really beautiful work (she’s on Instagram).

Classiness is too subjective to worry about.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/07/2019 15:16

Some of the art work looks good early on. That NEVER lasts, they all blur and lose colour and definition.

I've never seen amazing art work. My daughter has spent hundreds on her tattoos by top tattoists and I still think the art work isn't better than ok.

soapona · 13/07/2019 15:18

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/business-48620528

There has been numerous people in papers over the years losing or not getting a job due to tattoos. You have no legal protection if you do lose your job either.

Sunshine196 · 13/07/2019 15:18

I like tattoos, I have a small one on my wrist which tbf isn’t brilliant but it’s not offensive & I often wear a wrap bracelet so you don’t really see it. In hindsight I should have done more research but I see it as part of growing & learning. I’m currently planning a larger one on my back which is more personal but I wanted it somewhere just for me or where I can choose to show it if I want but I’ve taken 2 years to decide on this one as it will probably be the last one I get. As much as I like them I don’t want to be covered in them. I just can’t carry it off!
