I have just finished the Me Before You series and have serious book hangover. I've started The Silent Patient but still too hung up on my last book. Whats everyone reading?

OP posts:

Once in a House on Fire - very readable memoir of the author’s 70s/80s childhood with her abusive step fathers. Not really a misery memoir, excellent social documentary.

ScribblyGum · 12/07/2019 19:06

I just finished 11/22/63 OP and really enjoyed it.

Ime the best thing to get over a book hangover is to completely switch genres, if you’ve just finished a fiction series then maybe try a non Fiction book.

Jemma2907 · 12/07/2019 19:07

Baby Doll by Hollie Overton. Really enjoying it. I only buy off the bestsellers lists now as have had some bad experiences with the Kindle Deals! Once I start a book I have to finish too so need to be picky!

AnnaDine · 12/07/2019 19:11

‘The Black Book’ by Orhan Pamuk

hazell42 · 12/07/2019 19:16

The silent patient was good.

Fingersmith by Sarah waters was brilliant

Currently reading the Essex serpent and enjoying it

little fires everywhere was great

Loved the 7 deaths of evelyn hardcastle too, though a bit weird

StumpyinSomerset · 12/07/2019 19:40

Rilla of Ingleside (part of the Anne of Green Gables series)
My narrowboat life by Daniel Brown
Out of Control by Dave Borshik.

Always have 3 different books on the go - I love my kindle for this!

Daffodil2018 · 12/07/2019 19:40

I'm reading Tombland by CJ Samson. It's the latest in the Shardlake series, about a hunchback lawyer in Tudor England. They are gripping!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 12/07/2019 19:43

Catherine Mayer's Attack of the 50ft Woman, which is a load of muddle-headed rubbish tbh. Before that, Sam Byers' Perfidious Albion, which was dull. Before those in the last month - Elizabeth MacNeal's The Doll Factory (good and infuriating in equal measure), Michelle Paver's Wakenhyrst (good), Jilly Cooper's Jump (great fun), Connie Willis' Uncharted Territory (rubbish), Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus (great), Richard Maybey's Turned Out Nice Again (okay) and Tiffany Smith's Schadenfreude: The Joy of Another's Misfortune (good)

WisestIsShe · 12/07/2019 19:45

Just finished The Heart's Invisible Furies as highly recommended on the book threads.
I have Identity Crisis by Ben Elton lined up next.

stassy123 · 12/07/2019 19:47

Stay sexy and don't get murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

imarocketman50 · 12/07/2019 20:06

Can recommend Where the Crawdads Sing - one of my favourite books of 2019

Swing time by Zadie Smith
Damaged by Martina Cole

pandarific · 12/07/2019 20:18

@Lastbustowhitehawk I loved The Green Road too. Smile

In a similar vein, I can't recommend Graham Norton's two novels, Holding and A Keeper enough. I was so delighted to find what an excellent novelist he is.

TowerRavenSeven · 12/07/2019 20:20

Just finished Then She Was Gone, Lisa Jewell. I really like her books!

Lastbustowhitehawk · 12/07/2019 20:25

@pandarific thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely look them up.

anothernotherone · 12/07/2019 20:29

'Daemon' by Daniel Suarez in the living room and 'The immortalists' in my daytime work/ college bag and 'The Cannibal Woman' in my work overnight bag for when I do sleep-ins, rereading '1984' on my Kindle which is upstairs, and I also read a few chapters of 'The Multisensory Handbook' while waiting for my highlights to work at the hairdresser's Grin

I'm not very good at reading one thing at a time... I finish everything eventually but pick up whichever book corresponds to where I am...

hoteltango · 12/07/2019 20:29

"Road of Bones" by Fergal Keane. He's a foreign correspondent with BBC News, but this book is about the WW2 battle on the border between India and Burma against the Japanese. It's obviously quite a harrowing read, but there's lots of personal details about the people, of all ranks, who took part, so it's more about them.

I'm switching between that and "The Penguin History of the World" - but I only got that because it was 1.99 for the kindle version.

Upcoming is "A Fatal Inversion" by Barbara Vine - because that was mentioned on another thread, and it was available as an epub from the library.

Just as a reminder: Most County Libraries now have books/audiobooks/magazines online to borrow.

KurriKurri · 12/07/2019 20:32

Oh just remembered - a couple of weeks ago I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - thought it was awful - that's 100yrs of my life I'll never get back. Grin

MulberryPeony · 12/07/2019 20:34

Clive Barkers Imajica which is quite slow going because of the sheer size of it. If there’s a natural break about half way I’ll put it on pause for a few months and do somethings lighter in between.

I really liked Stephen Kings ‘63 but the mini series was awful! For King/Bachman fans I’d recommend The Long Walk.

The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was certainly enjoyable. I can totally see that as a movie.

I love Ben Elton and didn’t realise he had something new out. Added to the wish list.

FattyPedalsFuriously0hPipNo · 12/07/2019 22:41

Woman in the Window (but I've been stuck on it for ages, may have to just let it go....)

Yachiru · 12/07/2019 22:44

The Secret Life of Bees
One Punch Man vol15
How to win friends and influence people
Hollywood

Deadringer · 12/07/2019 22:52

pandarific I just finished Holding today and I loved it! Before that I read A history of wolves, and while it was very good, I can't say I really enjoyed it. All the light I cannot see is next, then Big little lies which i am really excited about after watching the tv series.

TapasForTwo · 12/07/2019 23:02

Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine

Dermagogen11 · 13/07/2019 00:40

An American Marriage by Tayori Jones, it’s interesting and different from the usual 99p online boring “thrillers”.
