I just find it so awkward...like comparing bank accounts but noone can seem to resist.
Ive had some 1st grades and some fails...either way i dont want to discuss it. It makes everyone feel bad.

Why are you so certain that it makes everyone feel bad? Do you actually mean that it makes you feel bad? I have just come to the end of my undergraduate degree (I won't know final outcome until the end of the month as had to defer dissertation due to external factors) and have done reasonably well, but my friends on the course and I were always open about discussing results between us. If someone didn't want to share, we never pressed them over it or laughed at them; it was simply nice to congratulate or recognise effort when people had performed at or above the level that they were expecting, or sympathise and support if it hadn't quite gone as planned. A couple of my friends have walked away with firsts; I'm thrilled for them, I don't see it as a competition. Have you historically been ridiculed or pressured over your academic achievements, OP? If so, I'm sorry that that has happened to you - criticising or scrutinising someone's perceived degree of intelligence can be a cruel and lasting form of psychological warfare. In my experience, nearly everyone at a university level is, figuratively and literally, very adult and considerate towards the individual attainment of friends and fellow students.
