What makes a person ‘posh’ ?

Yep - blatantly inspired by the other thread!
What do you think makes a person posh? Judging by the other responses it’ll be no tattoos, no swearing and never visiting a Greggs Grin

I would never be fool enough to think I can 'become one of them' nor would I want to I'm quite happy with the lot I got and the life I live now.
The point was the middle classes care more about class then anyone else.

The Middletons managed it!

its the Coutts bank account and the entitlement methinks, also the plummy voice

User8888888 · 12/07/2019 07:54

I did always wonder about the students with Coutts accounts whether they were spin off accounts from the parents. I assume they didn’t offer an overdraft and a free rail card....

SuzieQQQ · 12/07/2019 07:56

I don’t know anyone posh, I just know people who think they’re posh. Which makes them common

Coutts write to pupils recently accepted into some public schools and invite them to open a bank account there. They are not the only bank to do this. It might be an offshoot of a parent's account, but not necessarily.

She is very nice, and for the most part has assimilated into normal middle class, however she still can’t bring herself to use tinned tomatoes or buy a ready made meringue.

And there we have it....squishing your own tomatoes is what proper posh people do! Grin Or maybe having the 'help' do it for you.

Absolute best post of the thread!

Karigan195 · 12/07/2019 08:17

This is true. They also write if you’re in other certain educations too. I got a letter and binned it 😂😂

ethelfleda · 12/07/2019 08:21

drizzle I thought that too - that is now my definition of posh.
Better get rid of my multipack of Napolina Wink

Ethelfleda Just make sure your tomatoes are organically grown in the walled garden of your country estate before you ditch the tins Wink

Certain words and phrases are a marker
Frightful, marvellous, bit of a bore

Having a family school
Membership of clubs and societies where you need to be nominated by existing members like MCC, Stewards at Henley, Boodles etc

StroppyWoman · 12/07/2019 14:41

Oh god, I'm cringing.
Blush
Not remotely posh background - I'm tediously bourgeois really. But I happily use words like marvellous, frightful, ghastly, splendid, churlish etc. I hadn't thought there was anything wrong with saying them. I certainly hadn't assigned them to a particular class.

dementedma · 12/07/2019 19:24

In Scotland proper posh is being one of Her Majesty’s Archers...men only of course!

bigglewig · 12/07/2019 19:37

My lovely posh friend says "quite", instead of "yes" when agreeing with something. Sounds immensely posh to me!

EWAB · 12/07/2019 19:43

Yes poster above @bridgetreilly Common and Posh have much in common...
I think Posh is a weird mixture of having impeccable manners but not giving a shit at the same time. My SiL is a prime example. Private education, Oxbridge, no money but oozes confidence.

AnotherEmma · 12/07/2019 19:49

Confidence. That's the thing that "social climbers" can't acquire (not in the same way that you can acquire wealth and even an accent).

All the posh people I've known have absolutely zero doubt in their own worth and abilities. They are sociable, good at networking and making small talk. This usually makes them very successful professionally.

AnotherEmma · 12/07/2019 19:51

I also think posh people tend to be emotionally a bit cold, distant or weird. I think genuinely warm and cuddly posh people are few and far between.

QueenofPain · 12/07/2019 19:52

Ignorance or naivety about real life for the majority of the population.

sue51 · 12/07/2019 19:54

A scruffy old car. They don't need to impress anyone.

TeachesOfPeaches · 12/07/2019 20:07

The proper old aristocracy swear like troopers, have wonderful manners and wear second hand clothing. All the old money is tied up in the ancient houses and spent on private education. Have also been name checked or papped in Tatler

@Rue- your boyfriend can't swap classes like that that's hilarious. He isn't working class just because he's shunned his ancestry and what ... works? That's not working class. PMSL.

TSSDNCOP · 12/07/2019 20:52

Land. Fucktonnes of it.
