House deposit saved up while cheating benefits

PaulinesPenStash · 11/07/2019 14:00

Firstly I want to say I am as left wing as they come, a card carrying member of the Labour Party, and i am in full favour of benefits for everyone that needs them.

But this is an absolute piss take ...🤦🏻‍♀️ I have just found out that someone I am close to, her partner (and father of her children) has been claiming to live at his mums for about 5 years. he's been working the whole time while living with her rent free and living off her income, and a bit of his. They've saved up enough for a house deposit as he's saved most of his earnings and they've just had an offer accepted on a house

I don't want to go in to how I know in case it's in any way outing, because let me be clear I would not want to grass the person up despite how disgusting i find it

I am just very shocked and really want to tell someone but I can't so I'm posting it on here to kind of get it off my chest

The deposit amount is £50,000 btw 🤦🏻‍♀️

(The one positive is it will free up a council house !)

Report it before they buy the house.

alligatorsmile · 11/07/2019 15:43

doesn't impact my life (or yours), nobody died so nothing to be irate about.

I imagine I'd be quite irate if I thought that there was 50 grand of public money diverted from e.g. healthcare, education or utilities.

How sure are you, though?

bubblesforlife · 11/07/2019 15:49

Report it.
This is not why we have to pay our taxes.
I’ve zero tolerance for fraud.
If in need of support from the state that’s ok, just don’t steal.

Scorpiovenus · 11/07/2019 15:50

Grass them up i would :D

smoooth · 11/07/2019 15:52

If they don't now just rent out the council house they're amateurs.

yummeee · 11/07/2019 15:54

"doesn't impact my life (or yours), nobody died so nothing to be irate about."

Jesus. Have a word with yourself!

lboogy · 11/07/2019 15:59

I wouldn't report them. The council house did what it needed - gave them a leg up when they needed it to move on freeing up the home for another family.

The worst is the ones that sub let and that's something that needs to be cracked down on

urkidding · 11/07/2019 16:07

Surely it is your duty to report him, as it would be your duty if you saw him stealing from a small shop. Thieving is thieving.
What has it got to do with being a Labour voter? Labour voters want people in real need to have social justice, not support liars and thieves.

GrabbyGertie · 11/07/2019 16:08

YABU not to report it. I hate benefit fraudsters (as well as all the other thieves). Everyone should report suspected benefit fraud. If you are not reporting because they are your friends or family then that’s not a good enough reason.

TildaKauskumholm · 11/07/2019 16:11

Would definitely report. It's fraud, and as a taxpayer I begrudge every enny given to cheating scumbags like that.

Oldermums · 11/07/2019 16:15

I would report them. If people only applied for benefits when they really needed them for real reasons there may be more money to go round the folks who no choice but to rely on them.

ghostofharrenhal · 11/07/2019 16:22

But how do you know all this OP? Was your friend daft enough to tell you? Unless he has a really well paid job they must have had to scrimp a bit to save all that, benefits aren't generous.

It's pretty low to do this, but I wouldn't grass because there are kids involved.

SweetMelodies · 11/07/2019 16:26

I haven’t read the whole thread so don’t know if this has been covered.. but honestly don’t see how they’d be able to show their finances to the bank and prove there’d obtained the deposit money in a legitimate way.

ghostofharrenhal · 11/07/2019 16:28

I would report them. If people only applied for benefits when they really needed them for real reasons there may be more money to go round the folks who no choice but to rely on them.

Thing is there IS enough money to go around. Around £10 billion in benefit goes unclaimed because people are too proud to claim, or can't face all the rigmarole involved. Just under £2 billion is fraudulently claimed.

ghostofharrenhal · 11/07/2019 16:31

If they don't now just rent out the council house they're amateurs. Grin

cdtaylornats · 11/07/2019 16:34

For all you know the fraud investigators already know, just waiting for the house purchase so they can seize that at proceeds of crime.

BMW6 · 11/07/2019 16:34

Those who think "Good luck to them" I sincerely hope some "enterprising" burglars visit your homes very very soon. Good luck to them.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/07/2019 16:36

Where I'm from you just don't snitch unless its children or the elderly being harmed.
. However if I was the type to clactail to the DWP. They're the type I'd report. We're not talking about a single mum do a few hours in a sun bed shop to earn a few extra pounds to put a decent coat on her childrens back and sturdy long lasting shoes on their feet and a good nutritious meal in the stomachs. Doing it for survival is one thing. Doing it for sheer greed is very much another.

snowbear66 · 11/07/2019 16:36

This happened to my relative, she was sent to jail and came out owing a huge back payment while boyfriend got no punishment as it was going n her name.

littlepaddypaws · 11/07/2019 16:41

not sure what your political leaning has to do with the aibu, but yes you need to report this, banks will check all mortgage applications with a fine tooth comb, the fraud will come out somewhere if not now in the future.

dreamyspires · 11/07/2019 16:49

It’s not right but I wouldn’t report. The big corporations do far worse. No anonymous hotline to report them. But then in the governments eyes it’s not seen as such a huge crime. I just think there’s something distasteful in using an anonymous hotline to report someone. Echoes of gestapo tactics I think.

clucky3 · 11/07/2019 16:49

Report them

Purpletigers · 11/07/2019 16:52

Lauder - I have no doubt that there are landlords not declaring income . Not sure what that’s got to do with this though . Some people don’t pay what they should so it’s ok for others to defraud the system ??
I bet they do sub let the council house now. If she’s wise she’ll make sure the children’s school continue to have two separate addresses for correspondence and that she never posts a pic of them together on sm. In fact if you check her Facebook she’ll either have “single “ or “ it’s complicated “ as her status . Bet she’s a full time yummy mummy too 🤐🤮

AuntieGT · 11/07/2019 16:54

I know two couples who have run this scam. One is quite a close friend. Not really my business but it’s very annoying. I can’t really see a way around it though. I certainly don’t believe benefits should be made any harder for people to access but I think it’s just inevitable as they dint have the resources to check up on people.

katewhinesalot · 11/07/2019 16:55

There is no point reporting them. How on earth can they prove he's not been living at his mums?
