New job expects employees to work a month in hand?

MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 20:35

I've just started a new job and our contract just states we get paid on 28th of each month. When I asked about when we're paid she said we get paid for June on 28th July, July on 28th August and this essentially means that I have to work 6 weeks without any money which seems unfair to me.

What would be the reason behind this?

No 2 months isn’t normal and I work in payroll.

AbbyHammond · 10/07/2019 21:12

I've never experienced this - periods might be something like 23/1-22/2 paid on 28/2, but never 2 months in arrears.

EleanorOalike · 10/07/2019 21:15

It’s normal. I teach at a University, started in September and wasn’t paid until November!

chuttypicks · 10/07/2019 21:18

What date did you start?

butteryellow · 10/07/2019 21:19

I've had the month in arrears, the 2 weeks in advance/2 weeks in arrears, and the whole extra delay the first month, and variable bits of pay being paid later than standard pay, but I've never been paid 2 months in arrears!

Do you have a staff handbook?

I've had jobs with 2 weeks notice, 1 month notice, and 3 months notice - with no relation to my payment periods.

bluebluezoo · 10/07/2019 21:19

Normal.

I used to have an nhs job where you worked June, submitted your shifts worked by end july, got paid in the aug run.

Great when you left as you got two more pay packets!

But yes, my new job I started in aug 10 last year, so missed the aug pay run, so got 6 weeks pay in sept.

StripyHorse · 10/07/2019 21:21

Are you on variable hours? I used to work in HR and the standard was to be paid towards the end info the calendar month for all hours contracted in that month, ie all of July pay on 25th July (or whatever the pay date is).

But, for casual workers on zero hours contracts they were paid the following month, ie they worked in July, the hours worked were submitted in time for August payroll and they got paid the end of August. I know the same is true for many other casual workers paid monthly e.g. supply teachers paid through the LEA (agencies tend to pay weekly).

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/07/2019 21:23

I’d be questioning if the company has financial difficulties. They’re expecting you to have worked on 29th May and not pay you for that day until 28th July.

cdtaylornats · 10/07/2019 21:23

It is to stop you being destitute if you leave.

MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 21:23

I started on 12th June. Those of you who say it's normal you seem to work in public services though? None of my previous jobs have been this way and I've had to borrow money from my mum.

OP posts:
Drogonssmile · 10/07/2019 21:24

Normal for me in nhs

MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 21:26

No I'm not on variable hours.

I previously worked for a big company who paid me month by month.

Teddybear45 · 10/07/2019 21:26

I work for a huge bank and it’s exactly the same. If you don’t hit the cut off you don’t get paid for 6 weeks. It probably says something in your contract or employee handbook.

dreichhighlands · 10/07/2019 21:27

I don't think it is that unusual, it is one of the issues with changing jobs sometimes.

Oblomov19 · 10/07/2019 21:27

Goodness.
And the example of pp who said may OT gets paid in June, is standard.
But that's not the same thing as OP is referring to.

MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 21:28

There is nothing in the staff handbook about getting paid 2 months in arrears - it just says we are paid on 28th.

OP posts:
MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 21:29

@Teddybear45 I could understand if I didn't get June's money until July as I didn't work the whole month but it continues like that afterwards.

chuttypicks · 10/07/2019 21:30

It just depend on the date of their payroll cutoff. Ask them what their payroll cut of date is. You should at least have received something at the end of June as you started on the 12th.

myself2020 · 10/07/2019 21:30

normal. i started my last job mid november (day after payroll run),got paid in january for the first timr

leghairdontcare · 10/07/2019 21:30

Are people getting confused? This is not standard, especially not in public services.

Obviously there is a cut off for payroll so if they said you've missed the cut off and will be paid 6 weeks salary (2 weeks june, 4 weeks july) on the 28th of July then that's fine. But it appears that they're saying you'll only get paid 2 weeks wages in July and then wait for your July pay in August and so on. That is crazy.

FermatsTheorem · 10/07/2019 21:31

One month in arrears is normal, two months is not.

EB100 · 10/07/2019 21:32

Are you salaried or zero contract? In my work, if you were salaried, if you start up to 20th of month, you will get paid 28th. If zero hours, all the hours worked from 01/06 to 30/06 will be paid end Jul (only because it is a monthly payroll and easier to keep record) This should have been made clear to you when offered the job though so you could be prepared.

MoominMantra · 10/07/2019 21:33

No I'm not on a zero hours contract.

OP posts:
slashlover · 10/07/2019 21:34

I started a new job on the 10th June and wont get paid until the 23 July as the cut off is the end of the previous month. 23rd July payment covers 1st-30th June, luckily my UC is 5 weeks behind so July payment wont change as it covers the period until 7th June.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2019 21:35

So you will have worked 6 weeks, then on payday will receive 2 weeks pay?

That's not right surely+
