To think I wasn’t an “ignorant bitch”..

At a local lovely place yesterday paddling in a river. Large family showed up, one woman in particular was swearing really loudly - they had 4/5 kids between them and my DC there. I was > < this close to asking her to tone it down, but actually felt a bit intimidated.

As I was getting DC into shoes at the edge a massive lump of wood missed my head by about a centimetre and splashed into the water. I said nothing, just carried on.

As I walked off with DC they were all laughing - one man said “sorry” but I was a fair way up the steps by then.

Sweary woman yelled “you didn’t need to apologise it wasn’t even close to her”. Other woman said “is she antsy- ignorant bitch”

Then Sweary Woman yelled “IGNORANT BITCH” at me.

Fortunately DC too interested in looking for bugs to have noticed...

I do like how ignorant is used incorrectly by ignorant people. I remember hearing an altercation on a train that ended with a woman shouting that the guy she was arguing with was “just ignorant”. Seem to recall it started with one of them pushing the other accidentally. Nothing to do with ignorance at all!

Jellybeansincognito · 08/07/2019 22:09

Interesting that she called you in an ignorant bitch when you could’ve been deaf and just not heard them.

SmileEachDay · 08/07/2019 22:10

*"“is she antsy- ignorant bitch”"

What does that even mean?

I think it means “did she go off in a strop, ignorant bitch”

I suspect I was meant to - as Lauder said - respond nicely to the apology.

Unfortunately the river was invaded by common as muck chavs.

BesselVanDerKolk · 08/07/2019 22:13

Jesus, her poor kids. What an appalling example to set them!!

Deuxcaggages · 08/07/2019 22:17

You did the right thing.

Those kind of people have got fuck all else going on in their lives, you retaliating would give them the drama they obviously crave.
Their poor kids growing up thinking that's normal behaviour, they've got no chance.

Unfortunately the river was invaded by common as muck chavs

You see, there are a few comments along those lines on this thread and it makes me uncomfortable.

Sounds like you encountered a real life Vicki pollard op. You handled it well they were no doubt looking for a scrap

AriadneesWeb · 08/07/2019 22:21

Horrible aggressive people. You’re lucky they didn’t attack you!

WorraLiberty · 08/07/2019 22:22

WorraLiberty oh I would - DC is the kind who likes to stop still whilst learning new things, so we would have to have had the entries conversation within earshot of Sweary and co.

OMG I had one of those too. I say 'had' because he's 20 now but I forgot he used to stop still and expect a full blown explanation and debate, even in the middle of a busy street Grin

mumofthemonsters808 · 08/07/2019 22:23

You did the right thing, you can't win with people like this, they have no shame and love a good old slanging match, they are Scroats. I avoid them like the plague, I always feel really sorry for children who have this type of parent, they haven't got a cat in hells chance.

Poloshot · 08/07/2019 22:23

Absolute vermin

Adelino · 08/07/2019 22:26

Sounds like a horrible situation OP. I hope you can put it out of your mind.
I wonder if they called you ignorant because you 'ignored' the apology? If so the irony of that choice of insult is pretty funny.

Comps83 · 08/07/2019 22:28

Stuff like this is why I want to leave the country .

SmileEachDay · 08/07/2019 22:28

full blown explanation and debate

Yup. I reckon give mine a couple of years and he’ll start demanding citations 😂😂

diddl Grin I admit after posting, that exact thought went through my mind. Maybe you were on their ‘turf’ OP. I think someone suggested that.

SmileEachDay · 08/07/2019 22:30

Adelino I ❤️ that!

As in you are an ignor - ant (def: one who ignores)

@SmileEachDay
Me too, those comments make it all about one's class rather than the content of one's character and is bigoted. On this occasion anyone would be forgiven for not having the highest opinion of them but there's no need to be looking down one's nose at anyone else's socio-economic status. Sorry, feel like I sound like a sociology textbook but wanted to make the point.

MistyMinge2 · 08/07/2019 22:32

Sounds like she was hoping for a slanging match. You did the right thing in walking away. People like that aren't worth giving any time or effort to.

cheesychipsandbighips · 08/07/2019 22:34

Scumbags. If you'd have said something you'd have played into their hands

PodgeBod · 08/07/2019 22:34

No, you weren't unreasonable at all and whoever shouted that was definitely spoiling for a row. I agree with you that some of the replies on this thread are uncomfortable though.

FancyACarrot · 08/07/2019 22:40

nasty piece of work, I feel sorry for their neighbours who can't walk away....

SquishySquirmy · 08/07/2019 22:43

They sound awful, and you handled it well...
Who wants to get into an altercation with a large group of confrontational weirdos? Especially when you have your DC with you!
There's no way that would work out well for you, and you can out of that situation as well as could be expected... With your dignity and safety. You didn't stoop to their level, or risk your child getting frightened or you getting hurt. You were unlucky to encounter such nasty bullies.
