To think Quorn mince made me feel really sick last night

Freaking0ut · 07/07/2019 10:30

We eat quite a lot of quote in our house, love the cocktail sausages, the chicken bits that I put in curries, the nuggets (yum!) and the mince.

Last night I made a quorn spag Bol pasta bake, it was really good and as I hardly eat pasta I did admittedly stuff my face eat quite a lot.

About 2 hours later I suddenly felt extremely nauseous. I wasn’t sick but felt as though it was going to be. I had quite an upset stomach (sorry) and ended up going to bed with a cramping stomach. I still feel a bit dodgy this morning. Anyone else had this? Could it be the quorn?

It's not just you OP, obviously! I've heard loads of stories from people who have really nasty reactions to quorn. I've been eating it for about 30yrs & never had a problem, so to begin with I was quite sceptical when I heard people say it was the work of the devil, but it obviously does cause a reaction for some. Have you tried the beanfeast dry soya mince? I've not heard of anyone having problems with that.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/10/2021 23:31

That's not tofu. What the fuck is that?

Mould, it's mould. It's almost as if we didn't evolve to eat slime grown in a vat.

Have you tried substituing chicken into your diet instead of quorn? 100% natural, better for the environment and provides your body with essential amino acids.

KingdomScrolls · 02/10/2021 23:39

We try and have a few veggie nights a week, Quorn does to me what it does to you, I've never cooked it at home but have a few vegetarian friends and PIL. It took me a while before I made the connection between upset stomach and cramps and Quorn, thinking I must've eaten something off or because others were cooking for me it was just ingredients I wasn't used to. I just do vegetable dishes on veg nights, veggie lasagne, dhaal, roasted veg pasta, paneer curry etc and we like fish so have that a few times a week reducing meat consumption to 2/3 nights max without it feeling like a substitute meal. Just eating things we like.

user1745 · 02/10/2021 23:42

I believe the Quorn issue is an allergic type sensitivity. Allergies can start suddenly, even to foods you have eaten many times before.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/10/2021 23:45

Have heard of so many people who've had a vomity or exploding bowel reaction to Quorn. Far higher than with any other brand of food.

Awful junk masquerading as health food.

Cookingbynumbers · 02/10/2021 23:53

I think quorn mince in particular is well known for this reaction.
Pasta also can cause this due to gluten.
In my case I thought it was the quorn, but then realised it was happening when I ate other things too.
In my case, it was if I’d fasted all day (16:8 sort of thing) then eaten a normal meal. Within a few hours I experienced ‘dumping’, basically my bowel just rejecting everything, horrible cramps, honestly it just would pour out of me. And then I was fine.
Apparently that’s also a thing.
Bowels are weird.

savagebaggagemaster · 02/10/2021 23:55

I'm veggie and have eaten quorn without an issue over the years, then suddenly I couldn't tolerate it any more, especially the mince. I wondered if this coincided with the recipe changing to become vegan? Whatever it would now make me feel very ill with a bloated tum and a very bad time on the loo.

FWBNC · 03/10/2021 00:01

@Freaking0ut

I’m not vegetarian but we are trying to make a conscious effort to cut down on meat consumption as a family. I think I have some further research to do.
I don't eat it anymore. I like the Cauldron Sausages (they're low carb too! I oven cook them, coat them in olive oil first)

I eat the Caudron marinated tofu (pan cook in olive oil)

I also occasionally buy the 'This isnt bacon' but it's much higher in carbs, so not too often (pan cook in...olive oil)

& I like the Vivera Veggie mince. (It's not cheap though).

I used to eat some of the Quorn products, but reading about how unwell it made some people I stopped.

Chloemol · 03/10/2021 01:07

Yes. It’s mushroom based

I can’t eat it for that reason

WhoIsPepeSilva · 03/10/2021 01:11

Yup same here with the mince. Put me off all Quorn stuff in future.

PP are right it's fungus grown in a vat, heavily processed stuff.

Vancouverorbust · 03/10/2021 01:51

Look at how it is made
My DM went on a factory tour and has never touched it since

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/10/2021 01:53

@Chloemol

It's actually been banned from saying it's mushroom based. It's a synthetically grown fungus.
Hardybloodyhar · 03/10/2021 04:23

I get this with Quorn mince. I was fine when I ate it for the first time, then it triggered mild discomfort, then it escalated to v&d. I live in fear some smartarse will serve it on the down low because apparently you can't tell the difference between Quorn and meat. My bowels sure can, unfortunately.

lubeybooby · 03/10/2021 04:51

I don't have any problems with Quorn, but beyond meat burgers and other fake mince … I think mostly made with pea proteins? Not sure, anyway those ones give me fairly severe wind, diarrhoea and gastric issues

WishingYouAMerryChristmasToo · 03/10/2021 05:07

@Uselessname

I am violently sick around two hours after eating quorn. The last time I accidentally ate a piece around the size of my little fingernail I was sick with shivers, sweats, dizziness the lot for about five hours straight. The stuff is hideous!
It’s a fungus mushroom based thing - I know a number of people allergic to it and the test it just Samey samey we had it for 10 plus years can’t stand it now
HarebrightCedarmoon · 03/10/2021 05:22

I get terrible indigestion after eating regular mince or any processed meat, that's the main reason why I largely stopped eating meat. Don't eat much Quorn or other "meat replacement" products though. Tofu is different and is just bean curd and has been eaten for centuries.

Verbena87 · 03/10/2021 05:47

If you still want to avoid meat, lentils make a good mince substitute for bolognese (lots of protein still and way less processed than quorn)

HarebrightCedarmoon · 03/10/2021 05:58

Yes, I agree. Green or puy lentils are lovely.

Goodnews2020 · 03/10/2021 06:37

Good lord, there is nothing natural about the overfed antibiotic pumped mass produced chickens you find on the shelves today. What are your sources for better for the environment too?

Swap for lentils, mushrooms or tofu not awful meat!

Boomshakalakaaaaa · 03/10/2021 07:48

Did no one notice the date on the OP?

Teeturtle · 03/10/2021 07:48

I am violently ill after quorn. I have had it three times in my life, years between each attempt and have been the same each time so enough for me to think it is not a coincidence. Still if you have had it before with no ill effects, it doesn’t seem like you are intolerant.

I once looked into it and there is a relatively high number of people who are intolerant. It was banned in Australia when I lived there.

ZenNudist · 03/10/2021 07:50

I'm the same with quorn. I only ate it once!

FrankButchersDickieBow · 03/10/2021 07:53

@justinhawkinsnavalfluff

Yes definitely. You can be allergic to soya or tofu. It makes my DH vomit violently. Sad
Quorn does not contain either of those ingredients. It's a fungus, like mushroom, so if you're allergic or have a reaction to mushroom, this is more likely to affect you.

Quorn seems to have a dramatic effect on mumsnet users and their families, but nobody I have ever met in real life.

pelosi · 03/10/2021 07:53

The quorn cocktail sausages are so moreish, I did eat a whole pack once and felt queasy, so then I would just have half a pack, which was fine.

I didn’t really like the chicken style pieces and mince so never bought them again, but they didn’t make me ill.

maddening · 03/10/2021 07:57

I went veggie 26 years ago and used to eat quorn but became intolerant to it, If I eat it now.i am ill with ibs for hours (cramps and upset stomach)
