To think Quorn mince made me feel really sick last night

We eat quite a lot of quote in our house, love the cocktail sausages, the chicken bits that I put in curries, the nuggets (yum!) and the mince.

Last night I made a quorn spag Bol pasta bake, it was really good and as I hardly eat pasta I did admittedly stuff my face eat quite a lot.

About 2 hours later I suddenly felt extremely nauseous. I wasn’t sick but felt as though it was going to be. I had quite an upset stomach (sorry) and ended up going to bed with a cramping stomach. I still feel a bit dodgy this morning. Anyone else had this? Could it be the quorn?

I think I’m convinced to not try eating it again. It’s a funny one because I was buying it with good intentions, but now I wonder whether I’d just be better to occasionally buy steak mince from the local butcher who gets it from a local farm.

I def don’t want to feel sick like that again. Just going to go and have some cake to see if that helps Grin

teddybear that’s a good point and something to consider. However, yesterday, I didn’t eat any lunch because I’d had two massive slices of toast for breakfast. So I don’t think I ate anything risky at all yesterday. But i will certainly keep it in mind.

Quorn is bloody awful for those of us sensitive to it, and two hours is exactly the time it takes @ShetlandWife . Google quorn sensitivity, there's acres of information on it

Given that op has eaten quorn many times it's more likely to be something else. I did, however, say it was possible. I don't need to Google anything, thanks.

Freaking0ut · 07/07/2019 12:08

shetlandwife now I’m thinking about it, I’m wondering if I’ve had this reaction before but haven’t made the connection, as it’s 2-3 hours after eating it. Or maybe if it happens if I eat a lot of it, because last night I did rather go for it 😳

Well if its happened before then that changes things.

Guess you need to find alternatives to quorn. Are you vegetarian? Seitan and tempeh are good options for some things.

Corcra · 07/07/2019 12:14

I used to be able to eat it but I can’t anymore. I get awful cramps around 2 hours after eating it. It’s possible to develop reactions to food that you didn’t have before.
(lentils or chickpeas are a nice alternative to meat, I understand they’re not for everyone 😊)

Freaking0ut · 07/07/2019 12:14

I’m not vegetarian but we are trying to make a conscious effort to cut down on meat consumption as a family. I think I have some further research to do.

Quorn makes me fart a lot. Took me a while to work that out since we eat a lot of spicy food with beans Grin Since discovering that we've cut back quite a bit but I think that's partly because meat substitutes are a bit like nicotine patches - once you've been veggie for a while you stop relying on them as much.

As an alternative can I suggest beans or lentils instead? Halloumi is another good one, and big meaty chunks of mushroom.

katewhinesalot · 07/07/2019 12:19

Can you refreeze Quorn after you've cooked it? I've got batch cooked stuff in the freezer that I was just going to use as I would with a regular Bolognese.

bruffin · 07/07/2019 12:20

Quorn has been known to cause stomach problems for a good 20 years, i wouldnt touch it at all

adaline · 07/07/2019 12:22

How can it be good for you if so many get this reaction?

You could say the same thing about gluten, lactose, dairy, eggs and peanuts for starters.

The fact that some people are intolerant to a product doesn't inherently mean that product is bad.

Plus on these threads you're going to get people posting who've had similar reactions to OP. People aren't going to pop up and go "well I'm fine with it so you must be imagining things!".

WonderTweek · 07/07/2019 13:19

I'm the same! I love those little cocktail sausages and have no issues with them, but anything with Quorn mince gives me stomach trouble pretty immediately. I've found that Vivera's veggie mince is a bit more gentle on the tummy but will probably substitute fake mince with lentils in the future anyway.

Saucery · 07/07/2019 13:23

I’ve never fancied it as a processed fungus thing always sounded suspicious to me. I remember the prototype being on Tomorrow’s World and it looked rank.
DH used to eat it but it soon gave him horrible stomach cramps and diarrhoea so we stopped using it altogether.

PuppyMonkey · 07/07/2019 13:29

Enough about Quorn, what’s all this about the FIFA 1999 Women’s World Cup? Grin

Thekingintheeast · 07/07/2019 13:33

I find the white quote fine - I particularly love the battered crispy nuggets! I absolutely hate the brown quote (burgers and mince) and it makes me feel sick and bloated abd burpy.

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 07/07/2019 13:34

My DH came home once moaning about stomach ache and that he actually ended up throwing up in a public bin in the middle of the city... It was only the second time I used quarn that we put two naand two together when he ended up sick. Luckily the second time was at home...
It was approx 2 hours after eating it. I had no reaction

happyhillock · 07/07/2019 13:38

Quorn is awful, tried it once that was enough

Lovethetimeyouhave · 07/07/2019 13:39

Omg, I had the exact same meal last night and I have been feeling rotten all day

Lizzielocket · 07/07/2019 13:46

DD is veggie and it gives her the almighty squits. Never tried it and after seeing the effect it has on her I’m not going to.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 07/07/2019 13:56

I started eating it to be healthier and gave me stomach cramps.

Got back to 5% fat steak mince now. Read up a bit on Quorn and is not as healthy as I thought it was

HeyGepetto · 07/07/2019 13:56

I had the same thing, agonising stomach cramps, I had been eating it happily for years, then suddenly it started making me horribly unwell.
I can’t tolerate other fungi either now, mushrooms and some yeasts in fresh bread do the same thing 🙁
I thought they had to start putting a warning on the packaging that it is a potential allergen? I remember there was some kind of legal action about it a while ago.

Chesntoots · 07/07/2019 14:04

Same here with the bloating and diarrhoea. I have IBS too, so it really messes me up!

I tried it because I want to eat less meat and I can't eat alternatives such as pulses and beans.

teddypasty · 07/07/2019 19:14

Op I ate quorn without issue for years. Then one time I had a sausage and had pains and diarrhoea after. A week later I ate a load of the chicken style pieces in a stir fry and I was so, so ill 🤮 That's when I looked up what it actually was and stopped eating it. Until a friend made a bolognese with it and didn't say it was quorn. The third reaction was even worse. I'm very careful now.

yy558 · 07/07/2019 19:15

I use green lentils for Bolognese substitute.

Still not great for flatulence though lol

Freaking0ut · 07/07/2019 19:59

teddypasty oh god that’s my nightmare. I was wondering whether to try the chicken style pieces in a Thai curry tomorrow but I don’t think I will now. Sadly I think my relationship with Quorn is over.

yy558 thanks for the recommendation, I think I will pursue my lower meat diet but without the meat substitutes. Lentils will be my new friend 💨
