Hiya everyone, I wanted a bit of advice on wether this is weird or not. I have met some great guy who I want to be in a serious committed relationship with, the thing is, he has the same FIRST name as my cousin who was given away at birth as my auntie couldn’t care for him! The name has always been significant in my life because I too had a bad childhood & not a good start in life ! But now I can’t believe I’ve met someone with the same name. Would you find this weird ? Thanks Xx

Depends on the name, if it’s Steve then no! If it’s Frankenstein or Bertholdt or Josephus then yes...

Kidworries · 05/07/2019 22:37

Not really....many people will probably have the same name. It's just a name. Don't let it bother you x

SpoonBlender · 05/07/2019 22:37

Being weird about it is weird. Get over it and jump his bones.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/07/2019 22:40

There is literally nothing to feel weird about. It's just a name.

Lllot5 · 05/07/2019 22:42

What’s the name?

colourlessgreenidea · 05/07/2019 22:43

But now I can’t believe I’ve met someone with the same name

Confused
Harveywallplanner · 05/07/2019 22:43

The name wouldn’t be an issue no not at all.
What happened to the cousin who was given away? Just check it’s not him if the name is Frankenstein/bertholdt/Josephus

PodgeBod · 05/07/2019 22:45

My OH has the same name as my brother. If you really like someone you just get over little things like that.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/07/2019 22:48

If it's John or something to that effect yabu. If it's Carmeluous 3rd of Lantvolenville then yanbu.

Cherrysoup · 05/07/2019 22:49

Is he actually your cousin?

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 05/07/2019 22:51

Like PodgeBod, my OH and brother have the same first name. It's not really a problem.

HettyStThomas · 05/07/2019 22:51

DH has the same name as my brother and half the men in my family. We use surnames to work out which one we're talking about.

SarahAndQuack · 05/07/2019 22:53

You do know even if he were your cousin it would be perfectly legal, right? Some people have issues with it, and as a rule it's not a bad idea to get some genetic counselling, but there isn't actually any UK law against marrying your cousin anyway.

wheresmymojo · 05/07/2019 22:53

DH has the same name as an ex 🤷🏻‍♀️

SouthernComforts · 05/07/2019 22:55

Three of my exes had the same name Blush.

Current boyfriend has the same name as my uncle, who cares?

PickAChew · 05/07/2019 22:57

Fgs my most fun ever was with a guy with the same first name as my brother. I now have the same surname as that guy, as that's dh's surname.

SausageSimon · 05/07/2019 22:58

Is it a really unusual name?

pigsDOfly · 05/07/2019 22:59

Are you wondering if this man is your cousin?

As pp have said, it very much depends on how common the name is.

If he was given away at birth it's possible he doesn't even go by that name anyway.

stillmoving · 05/07/2019 23:00

Right.

So you think he is your cousin?

Spookydot · 05/07/2019 23:03

I get it. The name obviously holds a big significance for you and makes you feel a certain set of feelings when you hear it or think of it.
Is it a name that you could shorten? (Like if it was Simon you could call boyfriend si?)
If not-and you really like this man, you are going to have to train your brain to make it have new connotations. Probably not easy to do, but worth it if you see a future with new guy.

stillmoving · 05/07/2019 23:04

So OP doesn't think it's her cousin?

Spookydot · 05/07/2019 23:05

Oh do you think he might be your cousin? Is he the right age? Have you talked to him about it all?
