Boots body shaming advert?

MouthFullofGum · 05/07/2019 19:50

So two curvy girls take off their sarongs and feel confident walking into the sea - Great.

But why do they have to walk by obviously thinner women who are made to look judgmental and unconfident in themselves?

I thought body confidence was about saying all shapes and sizes should be embraced? Not uplifting one to shame the other.

Anyone who’s studied history of art will recognise that for centuries the unfashionable body of today was the aspiration

Women weren't in control of how they were presented, or what models were chosen. The (usually male) artist was.

kateandme · 06/07/2019 10:37

i think there is people saying that obesity is so bad though because people dont care about mental health/eating disorder enough to see how much of a bloody problem and on the rise these illness are!
if people cared about eating disorder as thye did about other illness like cancer etc then they would be shocked i think at the rise and the horror that they are.and the horrid im[pact this current body shaming has on that.and the way the current diet culture is shitting on so many people with body issues.
but no we still focus on obesity.
we continue to destroy people confidence and mnetal health and body confidence.

ethelfleda · 06/07/2019 10:42

Could you imagine an advert saying that fat men shouldn’t dare go to the beach unless they’d made themselves ”acceptable ” with a load of Boots beauty products?
No, me neither.
The ad is just yet more sexist shit. Because women don’t have enough of that crap to deal with, no?

This!

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 10:48

I disagree
We are very keen on judging and recognising that anorexia is not a positive thing, but very keen on defending obesity. You don't hear about "slim shaming" but a lot about "fat shaming".
It might be easier and more common to be overweight than underweight, but it's still shouldn't be seen as a positive.

Nothing wrong with having a healthy "boyish" or "curvy" natural body.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:02

We’re not even slightly keen on defending obesity. Look at the disgust at a size 16 on this thread. The ongoing shaming of women who don’t fit the current prepubescent girl ideal is the exact reason that ads like this are and should be made.

The first time in history this body shape was revered was the 1920s, it went out of fashion until the 60s when Twiggy came along.

This is just another example of how modern feminism is just taking over the tyranny of the patriarchy. Feminism is - or should be - all about choice and personal freedom, to be who and what you want. To feel comfortable in your own skin, not be judged by other women who really should know better.

you literally just proved my point in 2 sentences.
Ok, maybe not obesity, but being overweight.

Being a slim and attractive woman is in no way shape or form a prepubescent girl ideal.

anoeriexia is not the opposite of obesity.nor is it about being too thin.you can be a normal size and have the disease.its about all eating disorders of many size pepetuated by diet culture, fat shamin and mental health crisis by the way we judge and see things nowadays.
you bring in anoerixa as if it is that stigmatised oposite of fat shaming or obesity.it isnt.and thats why peolpe dont think its a positive thing!really?no anoerxia and eating disorders are horrific illness that are fatal and destroy lives.far beyond what weight they make people.

cheesychipsandbighips · 06/07/2019 11:06

Agree. Not sure why the skinny lady is portrayed as looking at them with disdain. They could have just left that bit out and it wouldn't have been so bad. Still annoying though, who dances in the sea?!

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 11:11

anoeriexia is not the opposite of obesity

no one said it was, but are you denying they are both eating disorders (or consequence of?)

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:11

@that25cUKHeatwaveof2019, you’re the biggest culprit of fat shaming on this thread. I see you’ve cheerfully totally ignored the rest of my post - is it too difficult to deal with?

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 11:14

anoerxia and eating disorders are horrific illness that are fatal and destroy lives.far beyond what weight they make people.

I think you are really downplaying obesity.
The fact that people are doing exactly that is what makes it even more dangerous! At least let's be realistic and honest about the problem.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 11:16

Here we go. Stating being overweight is wrong means fat-shaming?

That attitude is exactly what our current problems are. It's depressing.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:19

Wrong? Define wrong.

don't try to pretend that being realistic about eating disorder is what cause obesity, that is beyond ridiculous.

We wouldn't have a "diet culture" if people were not so obsessed with over-eating and junk food in the first place.

Don't try to find excuse to justify a problem.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 06/07/2019 11:21

Wrong? Define wrong
if you try to start a debate to explain that unhealthy weight (over weight in this case) is a positive, I am out.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:22

Keep going, every time you post, you strengthen my case. If you’re happy making other women feel bad about themselves, crack on but don’t expect to go unchallenged.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2019 11:29

*If you’re happy making other women feel bad about themselves, crack on but don’t expect to go unchallenged.i

Who is making women feel bad about themselves? It’s not wrong to say that obesity causes health problems. It does. It is not kind to pretend that it doesn’t.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:32

Lots of things cause health problems, obesity is just one of them. Implying that anyone over a size 8 is obese is ridiculous and most definitely comes under the heading of making women feel bad about themselves.

A reading of Fat is a Feminist Issue would be very instructive to some people.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2019 11:33

Where is this happening? Obesity has a medical definition-BMI over 30.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2019 11:35

I don’t understand what point you’re trying to make here. Obesity is a massive problem for the country because of the sheer numbers of people (men too) who are obese.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:35

Try RTFT @PurpleDaisies.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2019 11:36

I have. I don’t see anybody shaming women over a size 8.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:37

Seriously?

MonstranceClock · 06/07/2019 11:40

I also haven't seen any body shaming.

if you feel bad about yourself, that's on you, not on me.

We all know the facts. It's absolutely legal to drink in this country. People will still comment if I chose to drink my bottle of vodka every night in the privacy and safety of my own home, and no accusation of "drinker-shaming" will the problem more acceptable.
