Is it unreasonable to post a warning about a speed trap?

Just seen this debate going on on our local village Facebook group.

Poster A: Warning everyone, there are police with speed gun trap at XXX lane today.
Poster B: thanks for sharing, will go slow down there today
Poster C: the point of speed gun traps is to catch speeders and give them consequences like fines or speed awareness courses. Consequences change behaviours. You are wrong to pre-warn people as it removes the consequence which means the drivers won't learn a lesson.

For the record, I'm not any of the posters but I completely agree with Poster C. Typical facebook bunfight has now ensued.

Is Poster A unreasonable to post the warning?

OP posts:

A is perfectly reasonable IMHO - others will disagree

AuntyMarysBigRedPants · 05/07/2019 15:39

I'm with poster C

LoudBatPerson · 05/07/2019 15:39

I personally find people complaining about receiving fines and points for speeding for speeding infuriating. Just drive at the speed limit (or under if road conditions dictate). If you decide not to then there's can't be surprised that you get caught.

I would definitely be on poster C's side.

sacope · 05/07/2019 15:40

I would be poster D telling poster B what a twat they are Blush

Yes, I agree with C Grin

Yes. I speed (judiciously, though I suppose everyone thinks that!), and if I'm caught they have me bang to rights. Same with parking tickets.

paap1975 · 05/07/2019 15:45

I'm with C too

Awrite · 05/07/2019 15:45

I'm with C.

I hate the attitude that it's okay to speed as long as you get away with it.

Keepaddingpets · 05/07/2019 15:46

Our local papers says where traps are for the coming week.

herculepoirot2 · 05/07/2019 15:46

The problem with posting this is it will cause people “in the know” to slow suddenly at the relevant moment. People behind them who aren’t expecting them to do this will have to slow, too. This could cause an accident.

hellsbellsmelons · 05/07/2019 15:46

I see it all the time on our village facebook page.
There is always a warning of where they are, if they are around.
It's never turned into a bun fight though.

Unicornhamster · 05/07/2019 15:46

I had this argument with my sister a few days ago. She told me to flash people on the opposite side of the road to warn them about the police speed checking. My argument was pretty much the same, isn’t the point of them to stop people speeding in the future.
She told the story to our friends at dinner who all thought I was a pleb for not giving people the heads up 🤷🏼‍♀️

MyNameIsCharlesII · 05/07/2019 15:47

I agree with C as well. This also happens a lot on our local fb page. The camera van is right outside my house. I never warn anyone.

student26 · 05/07/2019 15:48

I never warn anyone. If you are speeding you fully deserve to face the consequences.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 05/07/2019 15:49

If people who see the page slow down because they think there might be a speed trap, then the desired result - people driving slower - has been achieved.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2019 15:49

The police in every area post the places they will have mobile cameras out.

So A isn't doing anything wrong

B is being honest

C is being a self righteous twunt

Boom45 · 05/07/2019 15:51

The police publish a list of where they're going to be with speed cameras. And there are warning signs before you reach a static camera - i don't think a Facebook post matters in the slightest.

stucknoue · 05/07/2019 15:52

The police in our county publish the locations of the mobile speed vans for the week on their website each Monday and our local paper publishes it. But I get your point

Howlovely · 05/07/2019 15:53

Isn't it our collective duty to prevent a crime from taking place? So, if the warning prevents people from speeding surely that's preferable to somebody speeding and all the risks that accompany that?

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 05/07/2019 15:54

They announce them in the traffic section on the local radio. Slows people down.

sacope · 05/07/2019 15:54

Only if the person behind is also speeding.

ChilliAndRiceIsVeryNice · 05/07/2019 15:54

They’re being reasonable. People who see the warning will slow down and not speed. Mission accomplished.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 05/07/2019 15:56

If you’re not speeding then you don’t need a warning. So anyone in A and Bs camp must be speeding? Twats.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2019 15:59

Oh... Peter Perfect just arrived

neverendingflorist · 05/07/2019 16:00

I think it’s fine to warn people. The areas they target for speeding are generally areas where a lot of people speed and is dangerous. Therefore the more people who know the less people will speed there so less danger.
