Is it unreasonable to post a warning about a speed trap?

bbcessex · 05/07/2019 15:36

Just seen this debate going on on our local village Facebook group.

Poster A: Warning everyone, there are police with speed gun trap at XXX lane today.
Poster B: thanks for sharing, will go slow down there today
Poster C: the point of speed gun traps is to catch speeders and give them consequences like fines or speed awareness courses. Consequences change behaviours. You are wrong to pre-warn people as it removes the consequence which means the drivers won't learn a lesson.

For the record, I'm not any of the posters but I completely agree with Poster C. Typical facebook bunfight has now ensued.

Is Poster A unreasonable to post the warning?

It has the same effect. People slow down and n that area. Job done

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2019 17:45

bbc really? I can sympathize but cannot accept the emotional load of the post. Your response is precisely what it is intended to elicit.

Such posts can easily shame people into not dissenting, thus shutting down discussion. Why would that be a good thing?

Newname908 · 05/07/2019 17:47

I don’t think I’ve ever approached a speed van without someone flashing me.
I always do the same where possible for others approaching.
It’s the done thing round here

Iwant2move · 05/07/2019 17:49

LyingWitch
He wasn't speeding, nor was he on his mobile. It took seven weeks for the police to recover his mobile from the wreckage. He had a clean driving licence on two continents. Speeding kills and it destroys lives. If I am being emotional then walk a step in my shoes. I would not wish anyone to experience even one thousandth of the pain I have experienced.
My husband had a compound fracture of the right leg and ankle, a shattered pelvis and he broke every rib and his sternum multiple times. This resulted in him suffocating to death whilst in absolute agony. So, sorry I will do that. That is the reality.

bbcessex · 05/07/2019 17:50

@CuriousaboutSamphire you can absolutely continue a discussion and maintain your own point of view without being as brutal as you were.

Poster A is a massive dick
Poster B is a tosser
Poster C has the right if it

If people don't face the consequences of speeding they don't stop doing it. And that's when other people end up dead.

bbcessex · 05/07/2019 17:53

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe - I actually can't believe what I'm reading... 'accidents are always caused by inattentiveness'?

Inattentiveness by whom, exactly?

OP posts:
Lweji · 05/07/2019 17:58

Inattentiveness by whom, exactly?

Usually those causing the accident, surely.
But in many instances the party "not at fault" could have prevented the accident by paying more attention.

It's called defensive driving.

Screamanger · 05/07/2019 17:59

I always flash my lights to warn people if I see the police. I feel that it’s a nice thing to do.

Kanga83 · 05/07/2019 18:00

I'm with poster c completely on this.

U2HasTheEdge · 05/07/2019 18:04

I am with A.

On MN no one speeds, ever!

Damntheman · 05/07/2019 18:06

Warning people will slow speed for one day, getting repeatedly caught and fined for speeding will either teach the speeder to slow down properly always, or take them off the road.

I struggle to see how this is difficult to understand and why so many of you would rather 'beat the man' and have more dangerous drivers on the road than let the police get on with their jobs of keeping us safe(r).

Alsohuman · 05/07/2019 18:09

People do far more dangerous things on the road than drive a few miles over the limit.

The police in my area (not sure if they do it Nationwide) publish where their speed cameras are going to be. If people can't be bothered to check, and also don't stick to the speed limits then that's their problem!

People have been prosecuted for warning others of an impending speed camera whilst on the road before.

Ohbehave1 · 05/07/2019 18:51

Gilbert1A. Why are they a selfish twat. It's not speeding that is the problem. It's inappropriate speed.

90mph on a deserted motorway is far safer than 40mph in a 60mph in thick fog. Or 30mph in a 30mph limit outside a school at kicking out time. Or. ( dare I say it) driving too slowly - such as 40 mph on a motorway .

I hope you did not drive with such a basic lack of understanding.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2019 18:59

Warning people will slow speed for one day

It won't even do that. It will slow them for as long as it takes to get through the trap area.

Knitclubchatter · 05/07/2019 19:22

It’s illegal to notify people where I’m from. So a fb post about a speed trap would land you a fine at the very least.
Drivers here flash their lights for animals on the road.

lyralalala · 05/07/2019 19:45

The police notify you round here. They are frequently at a couple of accident black spots and advertise it.

the road behind us is one of them (stupidly designed road with no visibility).

My neighbour frequently warns on Facebook of the police being there. Even on days when they are not Grin

DopeyDazy · 05/07/2019 21:12

we have a 20mph zone at school opening and closing hours, never a camera there , also a special needs school about 30 yards before sign so still in 30 zone and council won't move sign though arguably special needs children are more unpredictable and could dash into road away from carer. speed cameras are cash cows and nothing to do with safety imo, fair play for warning drivers

icanhearapindrop · 05/07/2019 23:04

Knitclubchatter, I always thought it was illegal to notify people about speed cameras (in the UK), but I’m guessing from this thread I’m wrong. Where are you from?

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 23:21

bbcessex One of the definitions of 'accident' is something that happens completely by chance. Many - if not most - road traffic 'accidents' are caused by carelessness on someone's part, not necessarily the someone who suffers.

sayanythingelse · 05/07/2019 23:25

Nope, not unreasonable. There's a Facebook group in my area to alert others of speed cameras, it has 24k members.
