That the lady in the Bank can't catch the Gay ?

MrsGaryLightbody · 05/07/2019 14:31

Well that was a fun trip to the Bank.
Lady in front of me was obviously complaining but I only caught second half when I had started to feel itchy that I'd miss my bus .
Apparently the bank teller had personally changed her phone app to the rainbow flag and she didn't like it as she didn't want to catch The Gay .. I listened and admired the teller explain patiently that she hadn't done that personally but it was to celebrate pride. Customer then says well I'm not gay so take it off NOW ... pushing her mobile through the gap ... I so want to know how that ended but they opened another booth.. aibu to call bank and ask lol 😂

Yeah same here colourless

EmpressLesbianInChair · 05/07/2019 16:34

so, OP and everyone else - you're not bothered by Pride's misogyny and lesbophobic behaviour? Just me?

No, me too. I’d have been very pissed off if my bank decided to rainbow its app but fortunately it hasn’t.

AppleTartlet · 05/07/2019 16:35

It's really disconcerting, especially for older people, when apps change appearance

Yeah deffo. Count me in on that. I'd worry I'd been subject to to some sort of scam. Being gay is nothing new. No need to make a song and dance about it in these enlightened times. I'm of the older persuasion and I've got gay friends and relatives. I've got over it. There's nothing new under the sun. Leave the fecking bank apps alone. Money is serious stuff. I'd rather sexuality was left right the hell out of it.

Miljah · 05/07/2019 16:38

@ChickenShwarma - Not keen on what the rainbow is coming to symbolise, either. Seems to be a lot of wokety woke trans, non-binary, gender fluid nonsense rather than original LGB message.

Yup.

Mumsie448 · 05/07/2019 16:40

It is incredibly frustrating for older people when apps change their appearance, and the woman may not have realised that this was done centrally.
Will the app remain as a rainbow, or will it change again next week? How many banks have amended their apps to rainbows? What if all the apps for your favourite sites were changed to rainbows? Will they all look the same?
This kind of change for the sake of it, is why older people find technology difficult to understand. Possibly, she will just have got used to it, when it will change to something else.

AppleTartlet · 05/07/2019 16:41

It shows people that homosexuality is not something that huge companies shy away from any more, and challenges the heteronormative in a way that reaches the people it needs to reach

It's a bloody bank! Why is this even an issue? Why does it need to challenge anything? It just has to look after my money, and give me a card and a cheque book if I need it. Why does it need to tell me it supports gay folk? It's a fricking bank!!

StroppyWoman · 05/07/2019 16:41

How many openly gay newsreaders

I get my news from the radio. Eddie Mair and Evan Davies are openly gay newsreaders. God, I miss Eddie now he's gone to LBC!

Hotchox · 05/07/2019 16:42

To be fair, a lot of the 'legit dumb' posts that have failed to grasp the OP's point are also from people who think the irate woman in the bank was ok to be cross, so maybe there's something in that.

To be fair though, in the age of people trying all sorts of tricks to scam money off you, farting about with an app icon for a near-on meaningless show of support for a cause is a bit bloomin' stupid. I can almost picture the meeting where the marketing guy talks over the technical guy's objections while the other CxO's nod their heads and wonder what's for lunch.... Grin

DonkeyHohtay · 05/07/2019 16:43

I have no string feelings one way or the other about Pride and the rainbow thing. But it should be up to the individual whether they want to have a rainbow icon, wear a poppy, whatever.

It's not right that banks are virtue signalling and taking that choice away.

AppleTartlet · 05/07/2019 16:43

The customer was extremely homophobic

You don't know that for sure. She could just as well have been confused at the change in her app. That's the most likely scenario.

MrsGaryLightbody · 05/07/2019 16:46

Ok I wasn't going to come back as so many people have missed the point but the customer WAS NOT elderly.
She indicated that she was not wanting the rainbow icon because she didn't want anything to do with THOSE people!

OP posts:
Quintella · 05/07/2019 16:49

The customer was most likely a homophobic twat to be fair.

Juells · 05/07/2019 16:53

SarahAndQuack
so, OP and everyone else - you're not bothered by Pride's misogyny and lesbophobic behaviour? Just me?

Oh, FFS. Not this again.

Why shouldn't it be brought up? Lesbians have legitimate complaints, that keep being ignored.

jenthelibrarian · 05/07/2019 16:54

I noticed that the hand-held units in Sainsbury's for self-scanning your shopping have gone rainbow for the past couple of weeks.
Really unsure if this is corporate bullshit or genuinely nice, don't much care as long as I can scan my shopping and get out fast.
Wonder if they've had complaints?

NKFell · 05/07/2019 17:00

so, OP and everyone else - you're not bothered by Pride's misogyny and lesbophobic behaviour? Just me?

I am also bothered by this. I love how everyone giving an example of gay people they see on TV/hear on the radio are men.

Lesbians on television are always either doomed, psychotic, haven't met the right bloke or engaging in ott sex scenes for the benefit of the pervs.

JellyBaby666 · 05/07/2019 17:10

The M&S LGBT sandwich IS delicious though...

misses point of thread

EmpressLesbianInChair · 05/07/2019 17:12

I get that you’re saying she specifically mentioned ‘the gays’ but I went into my gym the other night, saw a big rainbow flag & a Stonewall collecting tin on the reception desk & could feel myself giving them a full-on glare as I signed in for my class. Anybody looking at me would probably have assumed I was homophobic.

Violetroselily · 05/07/2019 17:12

Comprehension really isn't some peoples strong point, is it?

CassianAndor · 05/07/2019 17:12

sarahandquack oh, right, so you don't care about misogyny and lesbophobia? Can I ask why? What do you think about the fact that Pride have banned the press from this year's Pride?

Fibbke · 05/07/2019 17:18

Older people in particular are prone to being the victims of scams. If your banking app suddenly changes appearance then you should be wary. I'd rather be accused of homophobia due to questioning it than all my money being transferred to a Nairobi bank account.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 05/07/2019 17:39

The Ant and Dec thing was bad enough in M&S for BGT. Why can't they leave things as customers expect to find them?

SimonJT · 05/07/2019 17:39

@Fibbke And lots of work places don’t care, including the openly homophobic staff in the HR department where I work.

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/07/2019 17:40

"It's easy for a firm to change the colourways on its corporate logo. Not so easy for that same firm to ensure real diversity, representation, equity and fair pay for all. But the rainbow flag ticks such a nice box on the corporate and social responsibility report."
^This. Greenwashing, Pridewashing - I'd be impressed if big companies actually put their money where their mouths were and made a difference. But they don't, so I feel very cynical when they make their claims of being ethical. If anything, I suspect them of hiding their lack of ethics behind their acquired Pride flags.

"It can be really disconcerting, not just for older people, but for people with certain disabilities/conditions, to navigate changes like this. I'm dyspraxic with terrible visual memory, and a small change can really throw me and make it hard for me to remember how to do what I want."
I hadn't even thought of this! And clearly neither have the companies doing it.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 05/07/2019 17:44

I wish I'd been in that queue OP.

That is exactly the kind of entertainment I like on a Friday.

Ohbehave1 · 05/07/2019 17:46

The sad thing is that she really thought you can catch being gay. I thought we had past that sort of stupidity.
