That the lady in the Bank can't catch the Gay ?

MrsGaryLightbody · 05/07/2019 14:31

Well that was a fun trip to the Bank.
Lady in front of me was obviously complaining but I only caught second half when I had started to feel itchy that I'd miss my bus .
Apparently the bank teller had personally changed her phone app to the rainbow flag and she didn't like it as she didn't want to catch The Gay .. I listened and admired the teller explain patiently that she hadn't done that personally but it was to celebrate pride. Customer then says well I'm not gay so take it off NOW ... pushing her mobile through the gap ... I so want to know how that ended but they opened another booth.. aibu to call bank and ask lol 😂

Bloody hell, I'm amazed at the replies on here. I see the rainbows everywhere too, but I'm really not uptight enough to be arsed about the sight of rainbows. And the fact that there are people like this woman justifies the presence of these rainbows. It shows people that homosexuality is not something that huge companies shy away from any more, and challenges the heteronormative in a way that reaches the people it needs to reach.

colourlessgreenidea · 05/07/2019 15:01

Nice of the casual homophobes to take the time to reply here...

Where’s the homophobia? Genuine question.

I’ve spotted people saying they’re sick of the sight of rainbows, I haven’t seen anyone state any negativity towards gay people.

Or are you conflating them to the same thing?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/07/2019 15:03

Oh what a shame you didnt see the ending mrsgary

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/07/2019 15:05

I'd far rather they stopped offering banking services to Saudi Arabia if they really give a shit

Yep...

If you re-read the OP, you will see that it's not the OP who sounds like a berk.

MenuPlant · 05/07/2019 15:05

Agree 100% with lauramipsum post

colourlessgreenidea · 05/07/2019 15:06

It shows people that homosexuality is not something that huge companies shy away from any more, and challenges the heteronormative in a way that reaches the people it needs to reach.

I see it quite differently: businesses are engaging in hollow virtue-signalling and bandwagonning in order to maximise their income.

The use of a rainbow in their branding in no way proves that they are a progressive organisation any more than it shows that they have a savvy marketing department.

Fibbke · 05/07/2019 15:08

Oh god i went on actual marches for gay rights and acceptance back in the day. It does my head in seeing companies trying to capitalise on the Pride banner and make money out of it. Gay people have full human rights in this country at least and can get married now.

I'd like to see something similar for Age UK or disabled charities tbh.

LittleWalnutTree · 05/07/2019 15:08

I used to work in a bank and we had idiot customers all the time who would complain about all manner of things. One had a right go at me because we didn't sell stamps. I told her to pay a visit to the post office which was next door, but apparently that wasn't good enough.

Juells · 05/07/2019 15:12

I hope the teller deleted the app for her - problem solved

That's a bit mean. I suspect (though I could be wrong) that the OP has exaggerated slightly for comedic effect, and the person ahead of her in the queue was upset that the app had changed so she didn't recognise it.

I'm sick of fucking rainbows. As pp have said, big companies don't do anything that will cost them money, like not dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia.

msmith501 · 05/07/2019 15:12

BarclYs have done the same with their mobile app. The old blue bird symbol is now rainbow coloured and it was an auto update to my iPhone. I'm not bothered either way but I'm not sure my bank should be involving itself to this level.

This

Igotthemheavyboobs · 05/07/2019 15:12

Why hasn't my NatWest App changed colour? 🙁

Although, tbh probably a good thing as I struggle to find the fucker as it is. If it decided to go camo with all my other bright apps I'd never find it!

SarahAndQuack · 05/07/2019 15:13

I agree with @picklemepopcorn. It can be really disconcerting, not just for older people, but for people with certain disabilities/conditions, to navigate changes like this. I'm dyspraxic with terrible visual memory, and a small change can really throw me and make it hard for me to remember how to do what I want.

Also, while this woman may have sounded a bit silly, it's possible she was stressed and genuinely didn't understand that no-one had deliberately changed her phone.

Andylion · 05/07/2019 15:18

I get the OP's point. The bank customer was a dick.

I also get what other posters are saying. At my workplace, we have a huge Pride push, I don't know what else to call it. But I work at a university and I really believe in our case that it is all about inclusion and acceptance.

However, I live in "the Village" in my city, so rainbows were everywhere two weeks ago, everything from ads for a furniture store to rainbows on the flooring of my local supermarket. That was definitely corporate bandwagonning

FreckledLeopard · 05/07/2019 15:18

I'm bi, have previously had my profile featured in the Stonewall book of LGBT friendly employers in the past, and I loathe the sodding rainbows everywhere. It's meaningless virtue-signalling. I loathe sodding Stonewall from throwing women and children under the bus. Loathe the woke. It's all so utterly ridiculous. Why are the LGBT suddenly signalled out? Why can't there be lanyards recognising actual oppressed minorities (the disabled maybe?) Why are policy forces in England and Wales so keen to be so LGBT friendly, but ignore the huge problems with racism, stop and search, domestic violence, violence against women?

At this rate I'll avoid Barclays, M&S (no, I don't want a rainbow sandwich) and all the other corporates jumping on the nonsensical bandwagon.

Quintella · 05/07/2019 15:18

There must be many gay people working at companies who've rainbowed themselves to the hilt this year, who'd have a cynical take on whether this means their employer is as inclusive as they'd have you believe.

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2019 15:18

I've just checked and my Barclays app is now rainbow too. I hadn't even noticed. Blush

MrsGaryLightbody · 05/07/2019 15:20

Oh my goodness.
At least some people have understood what happened.
It was Barclays.
The customer was extremely homophobic!
I had raised eyebrows about that but it was her insistence that the teller change the app back to blue .
I wanted to see outcome cos I'm nosey and felt the teller was being extremely professional in the face of shouty customer.

For what it's worth, I'm not gay but do think the Rainbow effect has been overdone by corporations to be on trend.
But that wasn't what the thread was about.
Sorry I posted now.

OP posts:
CassianAndor · 05/07/2019 15:22

dodgeball I'm not homophobic but I have massive issues with Pride's lesbophobia, so I don't want their misogynistic shit anywhere near my phone, thanks.

peachgreen · 05/07/2019 15:22

Gay people have full human rights in this country at least and can get married now.

Oh, well, that's alright then. Never mind about homophobia in the workplace, or in education, denying gay people opportunities. Never mind about homophobic abuse and hate crime. Never mind that comedians are still making homophobic jokes. Never mind that gay people are still underrepresented in various areas of the media. And never mind that gay marriage is still illegal in Northern Ireland. So long as they can get married in England, who cares? Hmm

I agree that corporations are co-opting Pride and it's a bit calculated and gross. I agree that there are much better ways for businesses to show that they support LGBT people. But Pride still matters and there are still things to fight for, so it's better than nothing. And I don't give a hoot if some lady flips out because she doesn't want rainbows on her phone.

Fibbke · 05/07/2019 15:23

gay people are still underrepresented in various areas of the media are you serious Grin

Fibbke · 05/07/2019 15:24

But homophobia in the workplace is discriminatory. In law.

Primafacieloco · 05/07/2019 15:25

Yes yes yes. 100% agree. Fed up with the flipping rainbows, feathers and unicorns everywhere. Even the No.10 GrinHmm
