What do guys consider the point where weight loss has gone too far? Do you physically notice/ see it yourself or is it others?

@PolkadotLollipop
Way!
@SkinThing
Thanks xx

If you've always been a similar size and haven't had to restrict eating or exercise excessively to achieve the weight or size it is probably just your genetic blueprint.

It's very different to having an eat g disorder where you are larger genetically and deliberately (or subconsciously but artifically) drop weight and continue to do so and are medically assessed to be unhealthy. I fully agree that is bad and would never advocate that. I have raised concerns over my son's girlfriend over that issue.
Weight is dependent on each individual so it's hard to determine without full details what is too low for each individual. A full body composition assessment with weight, height and fat measured with full caliper assessment as well as complete food diary is a good place to start to asses the real picture rather than what looks good to different people and is a better measure than BMI. How different muscle groups are trained and built can give very different appearances and make you look big or small. Size and weight do not reveal all. Medical conditions are not revealed by these factors either as in my own case. Weight and size are complex. individual cases need individual consideration and one can never judge without all the details.

And no ED here!

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2019 13:41

catmumof1 You’ve put your numbers in wrong. Your bmi is 21.9 which is a healthy weight.

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2019 13:44

Weight is dependent on each individual so it's hard to determine without full details what is too low for each individual.

No doctor would say a BMI of 14 is ever a normal variant. None.

NoIsACompleteAnswerSometimes · 05/07/2019 13:44

I'm at the lower end of healthy weight, not due to faddy eating or excessive exercise but because it's just the way I'm built. I've always been skinny/ thin/ bag of bones, call it what you will, but any comments about my weight have always come from people with a weight issue themselves, and I don't mean thin people.

I think that, as said previously on another thread about child obesity, people don't necessarily recognize what is a "normal" shape, which varies from person to person.

One thing I've found over the years is that people have no qualms mentioning if you're too thin, but rarely does anyone say to an overweight person that they're fat, it's socially unacceptable.

PurpleDaisies · 05/07/2019 13:45

rarely does anyone say to an overweight person that they're fat

Confused

That’s absolutely not true

GlamGiraffe · 05/07/2019 13:45

I just don't get people's beef here.
I'm clearly not making up a huge amount if nonsense along with images and detailed history straight of the top of my head yet people for whatever reason they choose decide I'm being untruthful. I will happily swear on whatever you choose that to the very best of all my knowledge I am being truthful, but i shouldn't have to.
Have a little faith and belief.
People are all different.
Accept it. We come in a range of colours, shapes, sizes and weights.

Because no troll has ever done that before? Hmm

A close friend weighs 5.10 stone and she's 5'3. She's suffered from anorexia for 30 years, often hospitalised and permenantly weak and immune compromised.

If a 5'5 person weighed under six stone I dread to think how poorly they would be.

Your sister just has her numbers wrong, or you do, GlamGiraffe.

But you both look super healthy from the pictures and that's what matters!

MamaFlintstone · 05/07/2019 14:32

BMI is a range for a reason, and depending on your frame etc. your too thin point might be at different points within the 18.5-25 range. I think I’ve read 21-22 to be the average optimum from an appearance point of view, but averages can be misleading.

From a health point of view, I’d say too low is when it starts affecting your energy levels, skin and hair, body temperature or fertility.

twattymctwatterson · 05/07/2019 14:39

19.9 would be too low for me. Currently 5ft 4, 9 st 4lbs. My BMI is 22.2.

I'd like to lose a little bit of weight- actually neither weight or dress size is important to me but I carry extra fat around my middle and it's obvious even though the rest of me is slim. It's also fairly dangerous even when you have a healthy bmi.
My diet isn't fantastic because I'm a total white carb and sugar addict but I'm making changes and I'm exercising fairly regularly.
At 8.5 stone a few years ago (when I wasn't really exercising much) I looked gaunt so I wouldn't want to be that thin again.

Siameasy yes I used to play sport but I now have a 3 and 2 year old, it is difficult to make the commitment. I know nothing about body fat for sport, is 23 % good?

This thread is not about advocating eating disorders, couldn't be further from tgat

The woman in the flowers is no way under 6 stone at 5'5".
I'm sorry I just don't believe it.

mindproject · 05/07/2019 17:16

I'm 5 foot 6. When I go under 10 stone people start to tell me I look far too skinny. I personally think I look best at 9 stone, but others disagree I have been 8 stone before and I looked like a complete bag of bones. I am currently 11 stone, size 12 because I'm enjoying eating normal meals.

ZillaPilla · 05/07/2019 17:21

I currently have a BMI of 18.5. Was under ED team for over 2 years (discharged in Jan this year). Nurse was keen for me to get to BMI of just under 20.

I think I look fine (I do A LOT of sport so am very toned). I would say I look thinner than GlamGiraffe's sister.

Siameasy · 05/07/2019 17:43

For females below 24% is considered fitter than average. Yes it is hard with youngsters; mine is a bit older so I’m able to do more hobbies so hopefully you will get the chance to when they’re at school. I enjoy the gym to a degree but I find I’m more motivated with a sport iyswim

wonkywheels · 05/07/2019 20:50

I’m 5ft 4 and 7st 7lb. Been this weight for 20 years or so (45 now). It’s interesting for me as I feel like I do very little to maintain this weight, I eat what I want (no food is off limits) and I never feel deprived. However I did have a mild eating disorder as a teenager and my family would say (do say!) that this behaviour is so ingrained that i don’t even know if I am depriving myself or not. I guess it’s complicated. I definitely don’t want to lose weight but I don’t know if i want to put much on either! Anyway I don’t think I’m unhealthy. I rarely get ill. Someone upthread said they only see themselves as thin in photos. I am exactly the same and wonder whether often in photos there are other people so you get a comparison when a mirror doesn’t offer that. Not sure. Anyway this was a ramble and i’m not sure whether i am answering the OP!

user1471514421 · 05/07/2019 21:56

wonkywheels you are a nearly a stone lighter than me! Do you work out?

BiBabbles · 05/07/2019 22:18

I struggle seeing it in myself and others so as other suggested, I rely on BMI and those close to me to tell me. My weight has fluctuated a lot in the last decade and I don't really think I have a good mental picture to judge myself on. I don't think I'm the only one that needs someone else to be the reality check and I think at times in the society we live in now it can be really hard to really know what we look like in a healthy range.

To me, my collarbones/ribs/hips looked prominent at both my lowest weight (with a BMI in the 17s, when I had to fight to get to 8 stone to avoid a high-risk pregnancy) and at my highest weight (BMI 28, around 12 stone). It's part how I carry fat mainly in my legs & back and a bit in my waist and part that I spent a lot of my teens and twenties underweight and my style was already pretty forgiving/baggy due to trying to hide that and be comfortable so when I gained weight without trying it was surprising to me - all I could see were the bony parts.

I'm now at a pretty healthy 22 BMI/9 and change stone & seem to balance around here for the last six months or so. I have days where I think I look really tiny (especially in the shoulders and around my collarbones) and others - especially when the bloat is bad - where I think I look large/pregnant and just poke at my belly and arms.

stopgap · 06/07/2019 02:32

I’d say that the lady who’s supposed to be 6 stone is around 7.5 stone. I’m 8.5 stone and 5’7.5 tall and I don’t think she’s much smaller than my build.

In any case, she looks healthy and has good muscle tone.

WindsweptEgret · 06/07/2019 06:50

I agree, I don't see how that woman is 6 stone. I didn't look like that at 5'5 and just over 6 stone when I was a teenager, and she is an adult woman.

MadamePompadour · 06/07/2019 07:09

Dd (18) has a bmi of 17. Through chronic illness not an ED. She gets weighed at the hospital frequently and they've said her weight is just ok. Ideally she needs to put on weight but she's so ill even though she eats chocolate, etc it isn't happening.
