What do guys consider the point where weight loss has gone too far? Do you physically notice/ see it yourself or is it others?

What’s your aim? Are you an athlete?

user1471514421 · 04/07/2019 23:52

Siameasy, originally, pure vanity, just to look good, but I am enjoying the training, so who knows

I would say it can happen before you hit the underweight mark. It's when someone looks skinny.

Of course, different people have different views on what is too skinny and sometimes people will think their friends are too thin when in fact they look fine, but the person is used to seeing them bigger and some people hold a bigger size to be idea.

I was told by a couple of people once that my weightloss was good, but 'no more'. I listened and stopped. At the same time, one friend thought I was much too thin, but I've realised this was because her idea of a healthy weight is much bigger than mine.

There is a problem with the average becoming bigger that some people now think any visible bone is a bad thing, but it's quite normal to see people's collar bones or to see their ribs if they're stretching.
If sitting next to you on the bus is uncomfortable or you look like a lolly pop (head to big for body) you're definitely too thin. I sometimes find that when some people lose too much weight, their glasses start to look too big for their face.

WindsweptEgret · 04/07/2019 23:52

Bonus extra boobage, negatives feel fat and unattractive. Logic tells me I'm not! Telling myself that not having to go out and find a size 28D bra would be a bonus if I can put on a kilo or two. The 30D is too big both in the band and the cup now Sad.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/07/2019 23:57

"And I'm currently 5'4 and 10 stone 4 and have prominent clavicles."

Yes. I'm pear shaped so chunky thighs and cellulite even at a low weight, and pronounced collar bones even when I'm chubby.

user1471514421 · 04/07/2019 23:58

So is there alot to be said for shape and distribution? I am an hourglass

GlamGiraffe · 05/07/2019 00:06

This is a really contentious issue. I am thin. By most people's standards I'm very thin.
I'm 5'8" and fall between 7.5 and 8 stone.
My frame is tiny. I have size four feet and my hands and wrists for example are so small adult jewellery and watches dont fit me.
I eat.i don't LIKE kind really but I could easily eat three whole melons in one go, forget a pizza.

Everyone moans at me for being thin. It's depressing.
I take medication for a long term condition and recently the specialists have started testing my blood levels. They have concluded based on this that my metabolism us so fast I need weird drug dosing, but that it's perfectly reasonable I am so thin and my metabolism explains it.

Ots one thing if you are not in control of your weight, are at risk of an ED or don't have a set target weight and just keep loosing. But being slim isn't a problem

I think if you are trying to loose weight decide what you want to weigh, or what size you waNt to be. Use diet and exercise to gef tothere and stop. Then use msintainance eating and excercise.

I use exercise to be the shape I want otherwise I'd be a very odd bony thing with random bulges. Exercise is crucial to make and keep you the shape you want to be.

FlorencesHunger · 05/07/2019 00:08

WindsweptEgret I have the same issue, when I am skinnier I am 28c which is hard to find outside of the teen section and now currently 30Dd or E. Don't want to derail but boux avenue is good for 28" sizes. I suspect I'm bigger than a 30dd now or rather finding the right bra Shape to fit is difficult.

Total pain having to buy new bras to fit.

Unburnished · 05/07/2019 00:09

Yes, shape and distribution is key. Youre very lucky to be an hourglass. You’ll always have a waist and a flat stomach.

Im an inverted triangle so have a thigh gap even when overweight but my upper body gets chunky quite quickly.

I think the ideal BMI for a woman from an aesthetic viewpoint is between 20 and 22 according to studies iirc.

user1471514421 · 05/07/2019 00:12

Unburnished yes am lucky with shape, I have a small waist and flat stomach, even when two stone heavier

I didnt know that about the ideal bmi

Unburnished · 05/07/2019 00:14

Its to do with fertility I think. Something about looking slim but healthy. The BMI figure is higher for men - 22 - 25.

FlorencesHunger · 05/07/2019 00:19

Pronounced clavicle was probably too simplistic. 5ft.4 size 8 at 8stone my collar bone and chest bone are visible and my boobs are are really small at that weight so it's obvious that it's skinny for me, ribs are barely visible with stretching.

sweetkitty · 05/07/2019 00:28

I’m an odd shape as well I have tiny arms and legs from the knees down. My wrists are like a child’s too normal sized bracelets never fit me. My stomach isn’t too bad but my bum and hips are huge in comparison. I think peoples shapes are so different it’s difficult to tell with just BMI.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/07/2019 00:30

I’m 5ft 6, and my best weight is 10st 3, which is probably the high end of a healthy BMI. I was 9st 8 after illness and while it was probably a better weight, I looked gaunt. I had quite disordered eating in my teens and 20s and weighed eight stone and I actually looked terrible, although I think I was probably still well within healthy BMI range.

Unburnished · 05/07/2019 02:26

Yes, shape is crucial I think. Even when i was thin (BMI of 19), I still had a full bust and chunky arms but my ribs and knee bones jutted out quite badly and my bum was tiny.

On others, I think too thin is when they look weak or gaunt and the overall impression is of them being bony, unhealthy and frail rather than just very slim, healthy and delicate.

justilou1 · 05/07/2019 02:56

I have lost a lot of weight and am now sitting pretty comfortably in the healthy weight range for my height. My BMI is 23 which is in the upper end of healthy. I am short - 5ft1 and wearing size 6-8 clothes. I am still pretty curvy, far from scrawny. Now I am being told I am too thin from “concerned friends” who also happen to be people who struggle with their weight, who are scrutinizing everything I eat and don’t eat, and make a big deal out of it. It’s become very weird. Now I have an eating disorder, aparrently..... 🙄🙄🙄

WindsweptEgret · 05/07/2019 05:51

Don't want to derail but boux avenue is good for 28" sizes. Thanks FlorencesHunger.

Nautiloid · 05/07/2019 05:53

It's hard because people tend to comment negatively when someone loses weight but is perfectly healthy.

I have had eating disorders for a long time. I'm obese now but when I was too thin everyone told me so and I just couldn't see it.

Look at BMI. Mine was 19 but I was thinner than that implies because I have wide hips etc. Are you too cold all the time? That was a big one for me. If someone else ate how you do, would you think they had a problem? Ask a practice nurse etc.

SerenDippitty · 05/07/2019 06:43

I’m 5ft 4 and 9st 3lbs just now trying to lose another half stone. My 15yo DD is the same height but barely 7 stone, for me that would be too skinny but she’s young eats well and it’s just her body shape.

That height and weight would give a BMI of 16.3 for an adult, not just too skinny but seriously underweight! Yet it if you calculate it for a child it says “healthy weight”. I don’t get it.

YumyumAndyum · 05/07/2019 06:48

5’7
And 7 stone 5 pounds

For me it’s my arms. So scrawny. That tell me I’m too skinny. I eat well. Ridiculous fast metabolism. Tried to put on weight as feel self conscious in t shirt

WindsweptEgret · 05/07/2019 07:35

For me it's when it starts really messing with my head and I want to lose more when close to underweight. I'm physically fit and well at a BMI of 18.5 or 19, not cold or anything, I feel fine.

sirfredfredgeorge · 05/07/2019 08:35

Muscle, bone, water all continues to grow post puberty. You've not had time to reach your adult strength, you've not had time to reach your adult bone density, you've not had time to become fully fit (which increases the amount of blood and the amount of carbs stored - all of which comes with water and weighs a fair bit) So a teenager even after they've had the big fat increases from puberty still have more weight to add to become an adult.

SerenDippitty · 05/07/2019 08:38

Thanks, that makes sense.
