To turn off their bloody engine??!

Aside from being phenomenally bad for the environment to have the engine idling for over 30 mins, I am also trying to go to sleep and cannot whilst that noise is there. Grrrr!

DH says it's a public highway and all that but my God, i am tempted to go and politely [seethingly] ask if they need anything seeing as they are sitting right outside my property.

WIBU??

I don't think you're allowed to sit with your engine running. Ask them politely to zip it.

SaintAlice · 04/07/2019 22:36

And especially in this weather when you probably have your window ajar!

gamerchick · 04/07/2019 22:38

Do it, it's the most irritating noise when you're wanting silent time.

Asdf12345 · 04/07/2019 22:40

Ask but they may say bugger off.

They may well be charging up a flat battery or finding some relief from the heat in the only place with air con.

UrsulaPandress · 04/07/2019 22:45

Gives me the rage.

Reported a bus driver who used to start his shift by sitting outside my house with his bleeding engine running at 4.30am.

Now I have the twat across the road who genuinely believes he has to warm his motorbike engine up for 15 minutes before he sets off and then idle it for 15 minutes to cool down on his return. On a lovely sunny afternoon. Dick.

SlipperyWhenWatery · 05/07/2019 00:32

We have a motorcyclist opposite-left to us, opposite-left-left. Opposite, next door on our side of the street, and behind our flat.

Five of the bloody nuisances.

But the worst one is the opposite one, who when he arrives back for some idiotic reason revs the bloody engine repeatedly while idling, til eventually he turns the engine off.

We also get a lot of vehicles stop right outside the front of us, idling. We are the ground floor, and it's very very hot and I have to have the windows open.

I've been thinking about asking the council to put some signs up because it's meant to be wrong to do it, plus they're so conscious of the environmental impact..... If I complain then they might do this.

Legoroses · 05/07/2019 00:48

Is illegal. Run out there with a copy of the Highway Code, OP.

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 01:13

YADNBU. This always pisses me right off. But the only time I was ever brave enough to tell someone to "turn your effing engine off" was once when I was drunk and lairy and they only switched it off for long enough to tell me to get lost.

mathanxiety · 05/07/2019 01:19

I once went out with a torch to see what the heck was going on with a car that was parked outside my home with loud music blasting. I shone the light into the car and was just about to ask the driver if he could turn off the music when he hit the accelerator and shot off.

If it's dark, I recommend a torch to shine directly at the driver because he won't be able to see you if you shine it at him.

Bloodybridget · 05/07/2019 01:58

YANBU. I have asked people to turn their engines off a couple of times, they are surprised but obliging.

tobee · 05/07/2019 02:26

We've got a police helicopter circling overhead right now. Happens frequently. It's 2.26am! Not sure I could track the window to tap on it sadly!

Buddytheelf85 · 05/07/2019 06:23

Drives me nuts - happens quite a lot on our road. I think people often do it to signify the fact that they are ‘waiting’ for something or someone. But it’s bad for the residents, bad for the environment, and creates totally needless noise.

SrSteveOskowski · 05/07/2019 08:26

I feel your pain OP. This morning at 6.30am I was woken by two of my neighbours standing outside the house, talking at full volume and cackling away.

Naturally I couldn't get back to sleep.

I think I may stick on a bit of Metallica at around 2am tonight .....

The Highway Code isn't a law book

RedElephants · 05/07/2019 08:46

UrsulaPandress
We unfortunately have a boy racer/bloke (he's got to be at least 35) in a Souped up Subaru who arrives every morning at 6.15 and does this, and then again in the evening.

UrsulaPandress · 05/07/2019 12:39

Dh asked him once why he did it and he said he’d read somewhere about warming and cooling engines. DH is a bit of a petrol head and explained to him that this really wasn’t necessary with modern cars. He stopped for a while but he’s reverted now he’s bought a motorbike.

What are they driving FFS? most cars are all but silent these days

I wish they were but not in my area,, my neighbours and their visitors can also sometimes be very inconsiderate. Even cars coming and going are loud enough for me to hear inside my house later in the evening

I've only come across silence from electric vehicles

Cars are not silent?

ElizaPancakes · 05/07/2019 12:49

Are you sure it wasn’t a fan?

I say this because I spent ages getting riled about a cab idling outside my house but it turns out it was my fan Grin

Thehop · 05/07/2019 12:50

You’re not allowed to sit with engine running.

RichardYeager · 05/07/2019 12:51

It's so disturbing, happened with me too. A bus driver!

Lindellia · 05/07/2019 12:51

I tell people off for this outside my house all the time. They’re mostly so shocked that someone has called them out that they comply.

mussolini9 · 05/07/2019 12:53

The Highway Code isn't a law book

Au contraire, @clockworklime:

"Many of the rules in The Highway Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence."

GabsAlot · 05/07/2019 23:28
