Is really shit. Haven’t they heard of the me too campaign? Who approved this? AIBU on thinking this is wrong on so many levels.

AIBU to think this Poundland baby vest...
OP posts:
mathanxiety · 05/07/2019 06:24

I am Irish and aged 54.

And the phrase means 'he will be after the girls, and not in a charming or nice way'.

mathanxiety · 05/07/2019 06:25

And there is the implication that the girls are property, that should be locked up to prevent damage.

BeanBag7 · 05/07/2019 06:28

Theres a group on social media called Let Clothes Be Clothes full of examples of this sort of crap. www.letclothesbeclothes.co.uk

They also have a lot of examples of clothing where girls have (pink) slogans about being pretty/fun/a princess and boys have (blue) slogans about being strong/clever/adventurous.

This one babygro might not be an issue in and of itself (although I think its gross). However a constant stream of subliminal information suggesting girls and boys should behave in a particular way is really damaging for both sexes and makes me really sad.

I walk past a shop on my way to work which sells babygrows with things like 'I only cry at ugly people' and 'Come on Dad, you can do it' with the words 'arm' and 'leg' with arrows for the holes on them. I think ' who buys this shit' but clearly some people think that sort of thing is cute / funny. Horses for courses I guess.

placemats · 05/07/2019 06:30

I agree with mathanxiety and all the other posters who have said that this is vile. YANBU OP.

Lemonlady22 · 05/07/2019 06:31

who buys shit from Poundland anyway!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/07/2019 06:33

Really grim.

user1480880826 · 05/07/2019 06:35

It’s horrible

Mummadeeze · 05/07/2019 06:41

Tacky and slightly seedy is my take on it. I would judge someone who put their son in it on their bad taste.

Pinkyyy · 05/07/2019 06:44

Don't buy it then. Don't everybody wants gender neutral children.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 05/07/2019 06:52

I think it's a bit grim. And I am far from the 'professionally offended'

Allhailthesun · 05/07/2019 06:58

Why would anybody give a T shirt to a baby that means “ I will be after the girls and not in a nice way”?

The obvious interpretation is “ this baby boy is so cute the girls won’t be able to resist him”.

I think the Poundland thing is influencing this. No Added Sugar has produced this for years. It was £24 originally. Maybe people interpret it differently on a baby from a poorer family especially since they gendered the baby grow in blue.
I think it’s pretty sad that baby boys can’t have a slogan like this without people assuming the worse. Said as a feminist. But maybe that’s why I thought girls will be chasing my son one day ( even if he was gay, girls might still fancy him).

StoppinBy · 05/07/2019 06:59

I think it's cute, it is simply a way of saying you think your own child is gorgeous.............isn't every parent biased in this way anyway?

I know my kids are the two cutest kids that were ever made Wink

Ringdonna · 05/07/2019 07:01

Feminist board is that way>>>>>

floraloctopus · 05/07/2019 07:03

We clearly haven't moved on from crap like this or many other sorts of crap. I got an advert for an app on my phone the other day to edit photos which explained how I could edit my photos to make my gluteus maximus (which are already too much maximus and not enough gluteus) larger to please the men Angry

YABU if you think this kind of slogan is not unreasonable.

SweetJasmine17 · 05/07/2019 07:04

@Mumofone1858

There's tons of InstaMums posing their babies in those bodysuits(daddy only wanted a back rub - I've actually seen) and they get thousands of likes but thankfully others agree they are in fact gross.

happymum12345 · 05/07/2019 07:07

When worn on a baby it’s cute. Don’t over think it.

AnonymousP · 05/07/2019 07:08

YANBU at all. I can’t believe the number of people telling you to get a grip, it’s just a laugh, etc. Its awful and demeaning.

boatyardblues · 05/07/2019 07:10

The ‘lock up your daughters’ stuff for boys always baffles me. You wouldn’t put your infant son in clothing that says ‘future rapist’ (I hope). This is basically saying the sane thing but more coyly.

Ladyfaith · 05/07/2019 07:15

It’s a bit of fun, every mother of boys think he’s the most handsome little chap on earth, apart from me, mine looked like a skinned rabbit 🤦‍♀️. And more proud dads will say he’s going to be handsome, like his daddy when he’s older. It’s a bit of fun. Stop being snowflakes and learn to live in the real world..

Ladyfaith · 05/07/2019 07:17

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it, stop over thinking it

NeverGotMyPuppy · 05/07/2019 07:21

How is it being a snowflake?!

I'd hate my son to be wearing a a top that suggests he will be chasing girls and not in a nice way.

Really surprised anybody thinks its ok or funny 2bh!

ginghamtablecloths · 05/07/2019 07:30

No you're not, it's creepy and a complaint is in order.

ethelfleda · 05/07/2019 07:43

It’s a crap vest. I hate slogan clothes anyway.
I don’t find it offensive though - just tacky.

ZenNudist · 05/07/2019 07:44

Lock up your daughter's just means that a bloke is very attractive and that if you don't keep your daughter's under lock and key they will fall in love with him chase after him, elope etc.

So what is an archaic phrase I don't think it really refers to men as sexual Predators particularly. I suppose it the first two women finding men irresistible but at least give some sexual agency. Also refers to an older time when women were more like property or to be protected.

The vest is shit but YABU. This is not even in the top 100 things wrong with living in a patriarchy.
