AIBU to say it's very odd to see Ann Widdecombe claiming the mantle of the oppressed?

Hypocrite. Comparing the Brexit party in the great tradition of serfs rising against their masters, peasants revolt blah bloody blah. How that woman can say this with no apparent sense of irony is astonishing. She, who insisted women prisoners in the delivery room should be shackled to their beds. Detestable.

Couldn't agree more. Never liked her but she is at a whole new low now.

Apparently not

Didn't she insist on shackling female prisoners in labour?

No, Anne Widdecombe did not personally insist on this. It was the policy of the government she was part of. It wasn't females in labour (in fact they were specifically excluded from shackling) it was prisoners attending hospitals.

As she was minister of state for prisons she was called on to defend the policy, but it wasn't her personal policy in any particular way.

And it was the mid 90s. Pre human rights act and pre new Labour. It wasn't a particularly controversial view to hold at the time.

The big scandal was that an undercover documentary uncovered the case of 'Annette' an inmate in Holloway who was taken to hospital and shackled to her bed on the ward and then in the canteen shackled to an officer in full view of others. It turned out she was a particular flight risk. And it was dealt with by putting prisoners in private rooms and supervising them there rather than in view.

I actually thought that she'd improved after she left government - she seemed normal. Now, though, watching her frothing at the mouth on the Channel 4 news, I was really worried about her mental health. She seemed insane.

Mammajay · 04/07/2019 19:25

She seems like a panto character.

Gomyownway · 04/07/2019 19:26

She is a vile bigot. Her previous homophonic comments are atrocious. She has no clue about real oppression.

Burpsandrustles · 04/07/2019 19:30

Out of interest is anyone gay from Eastern block counties on here?

I know family member said they can be quite homophibic and I know Elton John film was censored for Russia.

Insulting.

I'm in the SW and we don't feel like that. A lot of us didn't want Brexit anyway.

I had hoped that the awful dance thing she did would be the last we saw of her. Alas, 'twas a forlorn hope!
