AIBU: swearing ban at work

We’ve all recently been moved around offices and I’ve ended up in an office which has a swearing ban. I’d been there 2 hours when I was told by member of staff that she doesn’t like swearing and doesn’t want it in her office. I hadn’t sworn she was just letting me know.

We are the same level at work and after asking other members of staff who’ve worked with her for a long time she really really hates swearing and pulls people up on it.

Fair enough she doesn’t want people screaming fucking cuntbadger across the office but crap, damn and bloody are also on the banned list.

I realise I’ve come into “her” office but AIBU to think she can’t police other adults language (especially as we are all the same grade). I don’t particularly like the egg sandwiches she eats every day but I’m not going to ban them!

Just save your worst swears for elsewhere. I manage quite easily not to say cunt at work. But I agree it's ridiculous to tell other adults not to say minor swear words at work, so I probably would just ignore her request and carry on like a normal adult. I definitely wouldn't swear at her or in conversation with her, I just wouldn't go out of my way to make sure she never heard a swear word. I can't believe grown adults can be so precious! Every office I've worked in has been sweary to some extent.

Topseyt · 04/07/2019 17:57

Tell her to fuck off. Or to get a fucking grip.

managedmis · 04/07/2019 17:58

Op and her mate

AIBU: swearing ban at work
Annabk · 04/07/2019 17:58

Bollocks to that. Egg sandwiches are far worse.

TheTrollFairy · 04/07/2019 17:59

Fuck that shit!
How can you police an adults language? In all honesty, having a ban would probably lead to me using it more by accident

ForalltheSaints · 04/07/2019 17:59

I think as you were advised on your first day there the request should be respected. Though expressing your anger in another language could be one way around it.

What type of places do those of you in places work in out if interest??

Previous places I have worked that have been very sweary are ship yards and engineering offices. The big bosses have been the main culprits!

Now I run a garage with my DH so yeah....... that’s pretty fuck tasting too! 😂

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/07/2019 18:02

Oh my gosh, golly gee and whoops daisy! Oh my days, ooops doopsy lala, jimminy cricket, of fudge! Sugar and shoot the dog! Fiddlesticks and shhhhhhhh-ut the door.

Nope I’d have a stroke if I couldn’t swear at least once in a while. My colleagues have a fine turn of phrase.

People swear an awful lot where I work now, and even when I worked in a parish office there were definitely swears (even the vicar).

19lottie82 · 04/07/2019 18:04

I worked in the shipping and engineering industries which were all swear crazy! And it was the big bosses who were the worst culprits!

Now I run a garage with my OH and yes...... that’s pretty cunting fucking tastic too!

OralBElectricToothbrush · 04/07/2019 18:04

Egg salad sandwiches in an office are far more worthy of a ban.

Omzlas · 04/07/2019 18:04

Please insert 'fuck' or 'fucking' between every other word, you get extra points for 'bastard', 'bollocks' and top prize for 'cunt'

Unless she's a manager, you're customer facing in some way or there's something we're not made aware of, she's got zero fucking right to fucking tell you how to fucking speak. So fuck her. To the far side of fuck.

Ps, you also get bonus points if you're multilingual and can swear in other languages. But only if you point out to her that the phrase you said in X language means Y.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 04/07/2019 18:04

Nah fuck that if she was your boss then 🤷‍♀️ but as an equal it's weird.

19lottie82 · 04/07/2019 18:04

Whoops just realised I posted twice..... Apologies Blush

NoSauce · 04/07/2019 18:05

What’s she going to do to you if you swear?

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 04/07/2019 18:07

Please at least once on a friday before the bank holiday say "See you next Tuesday!" To her.I did that to my cunt of a boss once and it was almost like therapy Grin

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/07/2019 18:08

"The sanctions seem to be her telling you off in the manner of “language please” whenever you slip up"
To which my response would be - 'Who died and made you God?'.

It is NOT "her" office. She is NOT your boss. She is trying to assert territorial rights here, but she doesn't have any. I would not swear deliberately just to piss her off, but neither would I waste my time and energy changing my language.

I might - might raise it with the boss that you feel her behaviour in telling people who haven't actually sworn that they're not to swear, is counterproductive to good team relations, and that it's creating an atmosphere in the office. Other than that I'd do nothing; and if she tried to language police me I 'd tick her off right back for thinking her opinion is law.

iklboo · 04/07/2019 18:09

Learn swearwords in various languages Wink

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/07/2019 18:10

Then teach them to her as the equivalent of ‘hello how are you?’

Mumsymumphy · 04/07/2019 18:12

Tell her to cunt the cunt off!

goodwinter · 04/07/2019 18:14

Wow, I'd struggle to self-police to the point of not even saying "crap" or "bloody" in the office. YANBU.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/07/2019 18:14

My workplace is very sweary.
It's a school.

PineappleTart · 04/07/2019 18:15

Loudly every lunchtime "oh the fucking stink of fucking eggs every fucking day"

Loftyswops988 · 04/07/2019 18:17

I honestly don't think I'd cope if someone asked me not to swear at work! Another adult policing my language - nope!
We don't swear if we're working with outside visitors or contractors but in the comfort of our office we swear like troopers!

HavelockVetinari · 04/07/2019 18:18

I couldn't cope with that! She's not your boss, just politely tell her that you prefer to express yourself colourfully and you won't be changing.

TheRLodger · 04/07/2019 18:19

My issue is I don’t or well try not to swear at work. However, if I knew that I couldn’t swear then I’d be so conscious of it and I’d end up swear more than I normally do.
