To be embarrassed to be British?

I've just seen on the news that the 29 Brexit Party MEPs all turned their backs (quite literally) during the European anthem in yesterday's opening session to the European Parliament.

Regardless of Pro-Brexit / Anti-Brexit debates, this is deeply deeply inappropriate, insanely undiplomatic and will have done nothing other than make the UK look ridiculous, childish and plain rude.

I'm ashamed to be represented by these people and the way things are going, ashamed to be a part of a country that is behaving like this.
Everyone else in Europe must think we are dirt.

I can only assume that Janey was a known troll. Or something. Because otherwise deletion makes no sense at all- and actually fuels the bonkers “can’t say anything these days” narrative.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 12:11

place your parents had sex in

Not in my case Grin

Its one of those family stories that i dont think i needed to know Confused

But i agree...its just where you were born

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 12:12

I was warning a relative that the play he was about to see at ds’s school had a lot of anti Christian stuff in it- and he said that it was probably because of Muslims on the Governing Body. I kid you not.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 12:13

The deletions did surprise me

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 12:13

Both of my children were conceived in Ireland. Fortunately they have other claims on Irish passports......

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 12:15

bertrand

I was told the reason the staff in john lewis are allowed tattoos, piercings and wacky haircuts (they used to be VERY strict with the appearance of their frontline staff)

Is because of the muslims...

People are weird...thats pretty much the biggest thing ive learnt in life

PreseaCombatir · 04/07/2019 12:17

My dads the same...i was having a bitch about the school and apparently its the fault of all the immigrants...which we dont have

I’ve posted about this before, but I think it depends where you live, as immigration is very localised. Just because it’s not affecting you directly in your area, doesn’t mean it’s made up.
DP is a plasterer, he has worked seen his wages stagnate and then decline.
He has been on building sites where he was the only one who spoke English. He walked off a building site before because they were only accepting orders for materials in another language, and he only speaks English.
It’s been proven time and again that high levels of ‘low’ skilled immigration has a negative affect on ‘low’ skilled workers .
So ship assistants, lorry drivers, and many manual workers.
My DP isn’t white though, so people don’t tend to just fob him off as being racist when he brings this up.

TBH I'd be a bit Hmm if a play at a school had anti-anything in it. Why is that acceptable? Some child in the school is bound to be Christian. Would it be OK to have anti-Muslim content, or anti-Buddhist? Seems utterly bizarre.

LauderSyme · 04/07/2019 12:30

I did consider, before posting, all the various scenarios and permutations involving all the billions of conceptions and births, but thought that might somewhat dilute my point!

Apparently statistics show that the people most concerned about the negative effects of immigration to Britain live in places with the lowest numbers of immigrants. The opposite of familiarity breeding contempt.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 12:46

Yes

I know

That’s exactly my point

Obviously there are places with massive issues...but the way the daily mail for example report is that there are issues everywhere

And so if I complain that I can’t get a drs appointment acc to my dad its due to immigrants but according to local statistics its a massive population of elderly, an expanding village (so no infrastructure) and a lack of doctors

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 12:49

My DP isn’t white though, so people don’t tend to just fob him off as being racist when he brings this up

If someone in Mumsnet brings it up as an issue where they live...i never say different, i dont live where they do

I wouldn’t even say anyone was wrong for saying it about our two nearest cities

But i will dispute it in my village...and to be fair the other local villages, and the nearest town

PreseaCombatir · 04/07/2019 12:55

But i will dispute it in my village...and to be fair the other local villages, and the nearest town

Yeah, I totally get that, it’s just frustrating when people tell you that these issues don’t exist, just because they haven’t seen it it their own village.
(I don’t mean you in particular, just generally, yours was just the post I highlighted to lead on to my point).

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 13:05

Oh sorry presea i think my last post may have been a little terse and i didn't mean it to be Smile

No I absolutely agree that there are areas with massive issues, and i can see what janey was talking about in some of her posts

It just pisses me off when my dad blethers on Grin

bingbongnoise · 04/07/2019 13:07

@Zaeem5

Absolute shambles and I think these Brexit fools have reached an all time low, even by their standards. Despicable.

Oh no, not at all... We can go MUCH lower. Grin

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 13:10

“TBH I'd be a bit hmm if a play at a school had anti-anything in it. Why is that acceptable?”

Really? You would cut off a significant % of plays if you had a no religion bashing criterion!

Lifeover · 04/07/2019 13:11

Both the Brexit party and Lib Dem’s acted inappropriately, yes it’s a waste of time and money them being there, bordering on a farce but, nevertheless they are there to do a job they just need to quietly get on with it, I actually found the Lib Dem’s t shirtsfar moreoffensive and childish

Juells · 04/07/2019 13:17

I think it's just weird. Just as it'd be weird to have a play with a lot of American-bashing, or French-bashing, or Scottish-bashing, or race-bashing. What was the play, just for nosiness?

TheCatDidSay · 04/07/2019 13:24

It’s all based upon fear of change and the unknown.

People against Brexit fear not being in the Eu.

People for it fear what the future looks like within it.

A lot of people here locally might well talk about the no place for a seen as typically British born children in their local school. We have a school that has not one single child with English as their first language. Not something I think anyone would actually expect to happen. I’ll be honest and say I was shocked when I read about it.

it is appalling whatever the cause. They wouldn't dare show an anti-muslim play, and they shouldn't insult any religious sect by such an act.

Juells · 04/07/2019 13:34

If you felt you had to warn an adult about it, how is it suitable for young impressionable minds? I'm not a believer in anything, but wouldn't criticise any religion in front of children.

You don't even have to say 'I kid you not...' I believe you 100%. I see it happening ALL the time.

@Gth1234

This ^ Christians seem to be a very easy target for some reason. God forbid you say anything about other 'certain' religions though.

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 13:35

The play was called The Lonesome West.

I am very amused at the idea of finding plays that have no negativity about anything. Any suggestions?

bingbongnoise · 04/07/2019 13:36

I work in retail, and for the past 3 years i've found myself being extra friendly and apologising to any visiting European customers for Brexit.

PMSL. Grin

@Jsmith99

I want us to go back to being the proud, open, inclusive, welcoming, forward-looking country which hosted the London Olympics (was it really seven years ago?), instead of the nasty, petty, divided little country of which I am now so deeply ashamed.

LOL! Grin

I too was ashamed. I work all over Europe and closely with people from EU member countries and I could barely show my face. Such a lack of respect. And I couldn't justify it or explain it. Horrible.

And LOL again! Grin

There are some corkers on this thread! Grin

Never ever EVER will I be ashamed of being British. NEVER.

Bet you wouldn't all be saying this about any OTHER race or nationality. (Or religion.) I think you know what I'm talking about. Wink

Shame @Janey0808 has had about 20 posts deleted. As @BertrandRussell said, a LOT of people think the same as her. And why pretend otherwise?

They are also entitled to their opinions and views. Some of which are very valid AND correct.
