To think that doing online surveys or secret shopper can make you money?

Just been on Credit Crunch section to ask a question concerning a friends financial situation, and I had a look through some of the other posts.
Some mentioned making money (not much admittedly) off survey sites and secret shopper sites?
So I did a quick Google and found one that said £5/survey and you're able to complete as many as you want.
Do people actually make money off these things?
There were a lot of search results which made me wonder were some fake?
Would love to hear some mumnetters experiences!

You can make money but not a great deal. If you manage to find one that pays you £5 per survey and where you can do as many as you want then please PM me the details!

Same with mystery shopping (which I do), you might get a free meal or other goods occasionally but you won't make a fortune from it.

Hope the link works! I've not done a link on here before 😖

Wouldn’t say you make anything from secret shopping in my experience, though it’s good for a free meal.

Justthetwothankyou · 02/07/2019 19:23

I was wondering if all the sites are legitimate? If some aren't how can you tell?
This is completely new to me. But thought it may be a nifty thing to do with my pockets of free time.

Yes I make decent money doing surveys and product tests

I worked for a survey company years ago as a student. It is legit but you can't exactly earn a significant amount doing these. Most surveys have quotas for how many responses they need from each group (for example based on gender, age, where you live etc. pre-qualification questions) so in reality you will not be able to complete all surveys you are invited to do.

PCohle · 02/07/2019 19:41

Lots of survey companies pay in vouchers rather than cash and will only pay you once you've earned a certain amount. Do be careful!

ClashCityRocker · 02/07/2019 19:44

They are legit, but usually takes a long time to make any money from, and you can't cash out until you've made a certain amount.

It's a while since I've done any, but I think I used to make around twenty quid a month just doing it when I had a wee while spare.

mamaofboyzz · 02/07/2019 20:30

Sorry to jump on but can you please send a link how to get in to mystery shopping?

greathat · 02/07/2019 20:34

The best survey site according to moneysavingexpert is pinecone I believe. Hard to find a link to sign up but the free postcode lottery regularly has them. Money saving expert has sections on the best survey sites etc

bridgetreilly · 02/07/2019 20:39

YouGov gives you £50 when you get 5000 points. Surveys are usually worth 50 or 100 points, with sometimes an extra 10 points for an additional section. They used to have a prize draw option but they've stopped now so it's just cumulative points.

You can only do surveys when they send them, though, not just as many as you like.

MonstranceClock · 02/07/2019 20:40

I've just signed up, so lets see!

I don't think surveys are the best use of time unless you have plenty of free time anyway and really need the money. Mystery shopping can pay well depending on area, but you need to pay attention to detail and be prepared to take photos, fill forms in detail etc. Most mystery shopping will specifically say no children to accompany you, so more for school age children during term time if you're not working in the day.

billybagpuss · 02/07/2019 20:46

Also a lot of the surveys have loads of pre screening questions then tell you you don’t qualify.

With mystery shopping I always found I ended up spending more than I earned because I’d go somewhere different. Had some nice meals out but the weirdest was 3 eye tests in a week all came out different.

Justthetwothankyou · 02/07/2019 20:51

Billybagpuss...3 eye tests in a week with different results?! Blimey 😲
