I've just joined a gym for the first time ever (terrifying in itself!). I'm not overweight but am pretty unfit, and have a sedentary job so don't move much.

First class yesterday. Ohhhh do I ache this morning! I know that's to be expected but I've booked another class for this evening (recommended to keep the momentum going) and I can barely walk to the kettle to make a coffee Grin has anyone got any tips to through tonight?!

What class are you doing? Drink lots of water, have a good stretch out and maybe take ibuprofen

Newschapter · 02/07/2019 11:29

Is it just DOMS or are you injured?

If DOMS then I would use a foam roller to roll out the legs (or the achey bits)

Once you start the class later you'll have a whole new set of aches Grin

No it's just DOMS, my calves are the worst. Standing up is so painful, I'm struggling to straighten my legs fully! Grin I know it's just because I haven't used the muscle groups in a while (ever?!) so I guess I'll just take some painkillers and pace myself tonight. It was a Hi Lo aerobic workout yesterday, and circuit training today. As much as I'd like to slack it off I think it's important to go to start building the habit of going IYSWIM.

Protein after or during the work out will help

Magnesium supplements and/or soak in the bath with Epsom salts in.

Magnesium supplements and/or soak in the bath with Epsom salts in.

This - you can also buy magnesium body cream which I find really good.

Sparklfairy · 02/07/2019 12:20

Oooh good idea, I have epsom salts so will have a soak!!

The aches will recede. Just push on, providing you aren't injured. Push yourself but don't go crazy...make sure your form is perfect before piling on extra weights, for example.
I always find everyone in the gym to be really positive and encouraging. It's hard, but try not to be self conscious and don't compare your workout to other people's.
Hope the circuit class goes well.

Keep moving! I always find DOMS muscles are better when I use them. Sit around and I stiffen up and just moving is hard. Shoulders were knackered today so I did a pilates class and they do feel better.
