This is a weird one. I'm not sure if AIBU in my guilt a d wanting to do a partial refund.

My mum died recently. I've been selling her belongings on FB to raise money towards having her ashes interred, which has been interesting to say the least. Most buyers have been grabby CFs and it's certainly changed my view on selling his FB.

Anyhow, I digress. Before I had the keys back to my mum's sheltered accommodation tomorrow, the last big thing to sell was two black leather sofas, about a year old.

As time was against me and one sofa had a small blemish I listed them for £150 for both. Got loads of interest, and one really lovely lady was desperate for them, so much so she sent me a £50 deposit on PayPal to reserve them until collection yesterday. Very trusting of her.

She lives over an hour away and said she'd send a friend with a van who lived in my town who'd collect them. He turned up with a surly teenager and after struggling getting the small sofa out in the heat, he had the hump a bit. He was then quite rough in getting the larger sofa out. I kept saying to be careful as it was catching the front door frame, but he forced it.

When it was outside, we noticed it was scratched to shreds both ends (see pic) and he just shrugged. Saying it was hard to get it out.

I messaged the buyer and explained that it got damaged on the way out the flat and I'm sorry. She's been really lovely, but I feel she's upset. As would I be.

Should I return some of her money?

Was it damaged before they moved it?

Jammydodger1981 · 29/06/2019 18:07

No, I wouldn’t. She needs to take it up with the people who did the damage, it’s their fault.

Fairyjuice · 29/06/2019 18:07

Yikes op that is quite a lot of damage! Though technically, it was the fault of her friend and the teenager, so you don't really owe her anything. If you feel bad, you could offer to give her some money back but I don't think you're under any obligation.

Jammydodger1981 · 29/06/2019 18:07

And the sofa got in there without being damaged so if they’d taken their time it was possible to get out

AnonymousP · 29/06/2019 18:08

No, the movers ought to pay since they’re the ones who damaged it. YAB lovely to consider it but it’s not your fault at all.

SciFiRules · 29/06/2019 18:08

I would say they were here collectors so it's her liability.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 29/06/2019 18:08

Not at all. They were a year old. My mum lived alone.

Only damage was the blemish on the cushion about the size of a 5p. Which I showed on the photos on the advert and mentioned in the text. Hence the price.

@Jammydodger1981Exactly. It wasn't damaged when the shop delivered it.

The man with the van was doing her a favour as a friend. Not paid.

Postmanbear · 29/06/2019 18:11

Of course you shouldn’t refund! Her friends damaged it

Redglitter · 29/06/2019 18:11

Absolutely not. Her friends damaged it not you. You're not responsible. Keep the money

Waveysnail · 29/06/2019 18:12

Nope no refund. Friend damaged it getting it into his van. She needs to take it up with her friend

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 29/06/2019 18:12

I just feel so bad for her. You could tell the bloke was annoyed doing it. She was so lovely.

I'd be so upset spending £150 for it to arrive damaged.

missnevermind · 29/06/2019 18:14

Nothing to do with you. They were perfect when you handed them over to the friend to move. They are damaged because he was an arse.
Not your problem.

Paddingtonthebear · 29/06/2019 18:15

Unless it was you who pulled ripped the sofa whilst pulling it out of the house, then no you are not responsible for this. It’s just bad luck, but the guys who removed it are responsible not you.

Pinkfinkle · 29/06/2019 18:15

Nope, she should ask for money from the teenager. He damaged it, nothing to do with you.

akmum18 · 29/06/2019 18:15

Don’t refund it isn’t your fault so you shouldn’t be out of pocket... for all you know it could have been deliberate to claim false advertising but as you saw and got a photo they couldn’t

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 29/06/2019 18:15

Not your problem at all. It is unfortunate but you sold it undamaged (bar the one bit) for a reasonable price. She organised transport so the condition is on her. She should have got a professional in if she was that bothered.

TheInvestigator · 29/06/2019 18:17

I get why you want to give her some money back but if they hadn't bought it then you'd have sold it to someone else as you had a lot of interest, so you'd have your £150. They damaged it; so why should you lose out on money?
Of course she was upset, but she needs to take that up with her friend. Where you very clear with her that you had no part in the damage?

Knitwit99 · 29/06/2019 18:19

That is quite badly damaged. I would be really upset if I was the buyer. But it is for her to sort out with her friend sadly. You suggested he should be more careful and he ignored you. Horrible situation though. Just what you don't need when selling up the last of your mum's things.

Drum2018 · 29/06/2019 18:20

Not your problem. Her incompetent friends did the damage. Forget about it.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 29/06/2019 18:28

@Knitwit99 I would feel the same. I'm also upset seeing my mum's furniture getting ripped to shreds.

OP posts:
GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 29/06/2019 18:29

@TheInvestigator yes I made it clear to her on messenger that the damage was caused when her friend moved it.

supersop60 · 29/06/2019 18:30

If it makes you feel better, then offer a small refund. But it really isn't your fault. So sorry for your loss.
