to want to live near a beach

I have this dream for my life of getting up in the morning and walking a dog along a beautiful beach. Right now, we live in the middle of commuter land. No beach in sight and the nearest beautiful beach is over an hours drive away. My DH refuses to move because he says it’s a fantasy, people don’t live like that and that it’s good to dream but it’s not real life. So AIBU? Is there anyone on here who walks on a beautiful beach every day? Anyone who walks a dog on a beach every day?

We live near enough to a beach (20 mins drive) to go down in the evening in the summer months but have to watch where the dog friendly stretches are (round here there are areas of beach where dogs are banned and have to be on leads along the promenade). At weekends and in the day time any roads are rammed with cars so we avoid it then - it doesn't help that the good beaches only have one road to them. During the winter the car parks are free and not busy so if you want walking and not swimming it's ideal.

Living on the sea front can be windy and freezing in winter. I now live 10 min walk from the sea and it's perfect.

I visited Byron Bay this year and there was a gorgeous beach with part of it especially for exercising dogs. Lots of lovely dogs and lucky owners having fun walks and zero dog poo or trash lying around. It was stunning, I am so envious of people who live somewhere like that.

Druridge Bay. Nice 3 beds for 120-200k, commutable to Newcastle, parmo, fish, the accent. We don't have a dog, but DGS is a pretty good substitute.

We live half a mile from the sw coast path in Cornwall. It’s a very pretty walk from here down a wooded valley to some small beach coves (dogs allowed all year). I grew up in south London so I still love it after years living here. I sail and kayak as often as I can in all weathers and it lifts my soul. Our DD8 isn’t remotely bothered by it, having grown up here! I’ve tried to explain that one day she’ll be sitting in an office somewhere daydreaming of messing about on the beach or in a boat with her old dad, but she doesn’t get it yet. So the dog gets the beach action every day instead. Smile

I couldn't move away from the beach. It's an absolute dream and I can't even comprehend what people do when they live inland. I would say 95% of my social time (hours outside of work) are spent at or overlooking the beach.

I live on the south coast and the beaches and greenward have been packed this weekend. Great for small local cafes but makes driving along the coast road a pain. Lots of red flesh and armpits on display in Asda yesterday as well.

3 mins from a beach, out of my street turn left, cross another road and up and over the steps.... beach.
It is also a very deprived area but the beach helps!!!

We live by the beach. I moved here in my early 20s from a city because I wanted to live by the beach.

I would love to live near to the sea, I am quite arty and I think the water touches my soul. I also love walking and would probably walk coastal paths (that aren't too dangerous) in all weathers whereas my dh just doesn't get it/doesn't have the same need plus I am wary of living too remote because I have dcs who probably wouldn't get it as much either. In my fantasy life, I somehow come into some money allowing me to purchase a bolt hole fairly close to the coast, I even do a fantasy house search sometimes around my preferred location. It is not impossible in the future, if we downsized later once the dcs are much older but at the moment it is a long way off.

Where do you and your DP need/want to be for work? If you have “portable” jobs, eg teacher, doctor, living on the coast could work, much more difficult if most jobs for which you’re qualified are in big cities.

I live near to a pebbly beach which is brilliant to walk dogs on and a lot of people do. However, during the summer season dogs are not allowed on the beach, which promotes loads of facebook questions as to when this is, and which part of the beach is available all the year round.

I think your DH is being a bit U.

@reddA Grin we'll keep our beautiful shithole a closely guarded secret. We don't want it gentrifying Wink

reddA · 09/07/2019 13:28

@HB2019 so true! I actually love it, been here 15 years and no problems that wouldn't have occurred anywhere else in the country. I moved to a posh area a couple of miles away because of Schools but moved back to the thick of it after a couple of years Grin

We live by a beach.
