to want to live near a beach

I have this dream for my life of getting up in the morning and walking a dog along a beautiful beach. Right now, we live in the middle of commuter land. No beach in sight and the nearest beautiful beach is over an hours drive away. My DH refuses to move because he says it’s a fantasy, people don’t live like that and that it’s good to dream but it’s not real life. So AIBU? Is there anyone on here who walks on a beautiful beach every day? Anyone who walks a dog on a beach every day?

I'm moving to Fethiye in Turkey in the near future where I have a home. I can't wait to enjoy the beautiful coastline and little coves as much as I want.

BritWifeinUSA · 29/06/2019 20:17

We moved to the beach. It really is as perfect as we imagined. Fortunately I work remotely so I have an office in the house with a beautiful view. I work from 5am to 2pm and then we go to the beach. Every day. Weekends we are there even more. Even in the winter. We are on the Pacific coast and it’s very calming to look out to the sea and know that there is no land for thousands of miles. Just water. I was so stressed in my job before we moved here. Best decision we ever made.

ThatIsNotAGoodLook · 29/06/2019 20:24

I’m lucky. I live between a beach and the South Downs.

Awrite · 29/06/2019 20:27

I can see the sea from my house. It soothes my soul.

Takes me 3 minutes to walk there. I go most days. Love cold, sunny Winter days. Nothing like a windy walk along the beach to blow the cobwebs away.

Bunnybigears · 29/06/2019 20:29

I live near a beach, I walk the dog on the beach in the winter only. Dogs are banned between May and October. But a nice brisk windy beach dog walk is still better than wandering the streets.

needanewlifeplease · 29/06/2019 20:30

I moved from city life to be by the sea, wanted to for many, many, many years and a bad life experience and decided life was too short. Best thing I did. I mean shit still happens in life, but the beach is a 5 min walk away and views of it from the house. My morning commute is a 3 mile drive along the glorious coastline. My advice, do it. I don't earn what I used to, but quality of life so much better

joystir59 · 29/06/2019 20:32

We live 5 min walk from two beaches with a seaview from our living room. We absolutely love where we live after sweltering in London for a lot of years. But we only need little part time jobs- there is no real work here so anyone who needs a proper job to pay a mortgage has to commute an hour at least

joystir59 · 29/06/2019 20:33

One of our beaches allows dogs all year round as well.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 29/06/2019 20:34

We are very fortunate to have probably a hundred beaches within a half hour radius.

This is our closest, a 2 min drive or 10 minute cycle. This is the other day after school.

Second one is probably 20 minutes away, but at low tide is pretty amazing.

I’m literally across the road from the beach and am hating it right now, still hundreds of loud chip eaters over there with their shitty music blaring, I’m trying to get my baby to sleep.. sorry super grumpy today, got a headache an over tired hit baby and I’m not built for this weather and although a born and bred Londoner since moving out I hate crowds and when our little town is invaded and left looking like a tip! No respect from visitors grrrr. But lovely on normal days though we use it as a garden basically, have dinner over there all time and great to be able to just go for walks etc. I don’t regret moving.

heidbuttsupper · 29/06/2019 20:37

It's not a dream op. I did it Smile

Villanellesproudmum · 29/06/2019 20:39

ThatIsNotAGoodLook, me too. I wonder how far we are from each other. I’m a five min walk from the beach, and a ten min drive from the hills:

I live 60 seconds from the sea depending on how fast I walk. Not a fantasy at all. It can be a reality, lots of people live near the sea, after all we are an island.

LifeContinuesToChallengeMe · 30/06/2019 09:22

I live right on a beach. I see the sea from all my windows. Only ever a couple of people the beach, mostly dog walkers even in the summer. I love it, me and the kids are on there almost every day summer and winter. I use it as my garden really. I hated living inland and really love the feeling of the constant movement of the sea.

FenellaMaxwell · 30/06/2019 13:39

I’ve been down to the beach this morning and thanks to our 150,000 extra people yesterday, mostly Londoners, the place is a shit tip. There were dozens of other locals out there picking up litter, but it’ll be the same by tomorrow. Why do people not bloody pick up after themselves?! Angry

Sundancer77 · 30/06/2019 13:52

I ‘Did’ walk my dog on a beautiful beach every day, but have a baby dd now so can’t do it as often..but I miss it SO much, if you want to make that dream happen-go for it!
An hours drive isn’t too bad? Maybe every weekend you could make a day of it?

ToastyFingers · 30/06/2019 13:56

I live minutes from the beach, it's nice enough but it's really bloody windy and swarming with tourists may-october. I'd much rather live somewhere with a forest, that had peace and quiet and wildlife other than seagulls.

DefConOne · 30/06/2019 14:15

YANBU. I live near the coast and can get to the beach in 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Being local we can also get to beaches that tourists bypass or they can't be bothered to walk 10 minutes which suits us fine, more space for us. I'm hoping we can move somewhere quieter and closer to the beach when DC leave home. We go all year round and I even did the charity New Years Day swim for the fist time this year.

MidniteScribbler · 30/06/2019 14:17

I live on a small island and the beach is part of our community. I go for a walk/swim every morning, and many of the students and teachers at school go for a swim at lunch. I always go for a walk or swim after work. We often have "pot luck" community dinners down at the beach, or we just take a picnic to eat down near the beach.

PookieDo · 30/06/2019 14:21

My mum grew up near a beach and she loved it rain wind or snow but now it is unbearable during tourist season and none of us would want to move there for that reason. I am also about an hour from the coast and I think that is not too much of a stretch but I don’t go often as I would like because a dog in a car for a 2 hour round trip not practical so it’s more of an occasional treat

LittleAndOften · 30/06/2019 14:21

I've lived on the south coast for about 15 years. I love it and would never want to live inland again. Our beaches have people zones and lots of dog zones so there's always somewhere to go.

There are plenty of cities by the sea OP, with job opportunities, amenities etc. It really doesn't have to be a dream!

HabboHabbo · 30/06/2019 14:27

I live a 3 minute walk from a gorgeous beach. We walk dog there daily. On sunny nights where we can't be bothered to cook dinner we just sit on the beach with a chippy. Dog has a splash about and we watch the sun set. Little boy due in two weeks and can't wait for him to grow up next to the beach! It's not always a fantasy - but we do live rurally, we have a small town a 15 minute drive away. Whilst we love it here, my sister who lives in London couldn't think of anything worse! It's totally subjective.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 30/06/2019 14:29

I’d love to live near the sea, but not sure I’d cope with the sea extra traffic in summer.

We live about 40 minutes from our nearest beach, but spend a lot of time on the coast in the summer. Went down yesterday after work for tea, which is completely doable.

I wouldn’t want to live any further from the sea than I currently do.
