to want to live near a beach

I have this dream for my life of getting up in the morning and walking a dog along a beautiful beach. Right now, we live in the middle of commuter land. No beach in sight and the nearest beautiful beach is over an hours drive away. My DH refuses to move because he says it’s a fantasy, people don’t live like that and that it’s good to dream but it’s not real life. So AIBU? Is there anyone on here who walks on a beautiful beach every day? Anyone who walks a dog on a beach every day?

What kind of an idiot are you married to?

Does he think all houses by the sea are show homes?

From 10yo to 20yo I lived s 5 minute walk to the beach then much of my 20’s too. Since then I’ve lived in cities, ski resorts and on a lake.

I’m now living in a very boring inland village (not even s chocolate box one) and I MISS the sea SO much. The nearest beach is 1-1.5 hours away and a typical English ‘seasude’ & MANIC on sunny days ...not the beautiful beaches of my previous life I need to move, but as I’m no longer the only one to consider I’m not sure when that’ll happen (jobs:kids/mortgages) but it will

I’m happier by the sea, it grounds me in a way nothing else does ... I just need to
Align a million other things in life to make it possible again.

Your DH is being a complete idiot and I couldn’t live with someone so ‘challenged’ by such a basic concept I’d seriously be reconsidering my relationship if my DH came out with such a ridiculous statement

Lots of lovely photos on the thread 🌷

*ElGuardiandenoche are you in NZ? That looks like an Auckland North Shote beach 😊

DownstairsMixUp · 30/06/2019 15:12

I live right by the beach and commute into the nearest city 8 miles away. My husband works in London and commutes from here. Definitely can happen.

OneTownsVeryLikeAnother · 30/06/2019 15:42

I think there's a big difference between beach and beach at a seaside resort. I live just over a mile from the quiet part of our local beach so can obviously walk there, but there's free car-parking and never any traffic queues. Because there are no facilities the tourists pretty much ignore it in favour of the resort beach which is further along, no tourists eating food means no litter and no seagulls!

randomncftw · 30/06/2019 15:44

We moved from London 2 years ago to the Essex Seaside (commutable distance to London) and couldn’t be happier. I too have always wanted to live by the beach and now we do 🙂

PinkBuffalo · 30/06/2019 15:52

YANBU I live on an island and love being by the sea. Regularly walk 6plus miles along the coast (there and back)
It's great when the weather is good/dry but can be awful in winter. Relentless north easterly winds make it SO cold!

I lived less than 100yds from beach/seafront for 7 years - probably didn’t make the most of it though
Moved away to a village which is 1/2 hour drive to coast
Main thing I don’t miss is the summer traffic jams and not always being able to park near my home in the height of holiday season despite having residents parking permit
I can’t imagine living in a city though or somewhere that is a long drive away from either sea or lakes and mountains
I feel I’ve got the best of both worlds where I live now

ElGuardiandenoche · 01/07/2019 01:40

@IncrediblySadToo, no I’m in Cornwall and have many beaches from 2minutes to an hour away. We have a boat and can access beaches that the tourists don’t know about in the summer and reclaim the rest in the winter.

I would love to go to New Zealand but at the moment we can’t afford it due to DH low wages.

dragonway · 01/07/2019 09:03

Thanks everyone. I’m so envious of anyone living near those beautiful beaches. We went on Friday and it took an hour to get to one. Going to start thinking about a life change!

Sundancer you need to invest in a second hand off road pushchair!! Ours has done miles on our beach! Only cost £50!!

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 11:19

My flat is on the bank of the Rhine
My previous flat was on the bank of the Thames

I love the daily walks by water & trees, so soothing

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 11:20

Somehow, sea doesn't appeal though, just rivers Confused

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/07/2019 11:22

Anyone who walks a dog on a beach every day?

My friends with dogs do

We have lived near the sea for so long I can’t imagine living inland

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/07/2019 11:23

Its not a tourist beach so its rarely busy...

Chimpd0g · 01/07/2019 11:24

I live in a popular seaside town. I absolutely love it BUT hate how busy it gets in the summer. We drive further along the coast to get away from the crowds

We live a short walk from a small beach and a short drive to many bigger and very beautiful ones. I don't do it every morning due to school runs and we don't have a dog however we do spend a massive amount on time by the sea all year round. I'd hate to not have it on my door step if I'm honest

Whathappenedtooursummer · 01/07/2019 11:51

4 ddogs walked daily on the beach. A stone's throw away. After 9 pm it's empty so take our unsociable ddog then!
Blissful.

Booboo66 · 01/07/2019 11:52

Very few dog friendly beaches so do your homework first

I live by the coast and don't know of a single beach that isn't dog friendly?! Never come across a beach on holiday where you can't take dogs either?

GordonBrockman · 01/07/2019 12:06

I live a 1 minute walk from the beach. Not a beautiful beach, and the town is a dive but I still love being by the beach. I don’t have dogs but walk the children there daily Grin

InezInez · 01/07/2019 12:08

The beach is always cold, windy & stinks like fish!! I would never want to live there. Going on holiday once or twice a summer to the beach is more realistic. Why don't you buy a holiday cottage for summers maybe?

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 01/07/2019 12:09

OP have you read Blue Mind? It's about why people are drawn to the ocean and the benefits for our mental (and physical) health.

When you say commuter land, do you mean for London? Because there are plenty of lively beach towns within commuting distance from the city, depending on whereabouts work is.

MonstranceClock · 01/07/2019 12:12

This is about 30 seconds from my door step. Of course people live by the beach.

The only place you can walk dogs on nice pristine white sand is in Scotland. But the weather will be rubbish Grin
