To ask how are people not dying in new builds with the heat?

Our new build is a fu..ing joke!! We are actually going to have to sell our house before next year or live downstairs because it is so hot upstairs at night that a newborn baby would over heat and end up in hospital without a doubt!

How the hell are people coping with the heat in new builds? We live in a redrow house, we have to shut all the blackout blinds at the back and open all the windows at the front and even with 2 metal fans on its still like sitting in a sauna! I don't want to go to sleep because I am scared DC is going to over heat.

I cant cope 🥵🥵🥵

Another one roasting alive in a new build here! The whole house was 28 degrees last night... slept with the windows open so we could actually breathe, and woke up with hayfever! Summer is not my friend.
DD (3) has lived here nearly all of her life (we moved when she was 5 months) and she is not bothered by the heat at all. No signs of overheating, she even slept under the duvet last night! It's what you're used to, I guess.

LoftHatchBliss · 30/06/2019 11:22

Name change in honour of the fantastic advice a pp gave to open the loft hatch to let the upstairs heat out. It only bloody worked! I could cry. I almost had a normal temperature and sleep upstairs last night. Love you so much, all posters who recommended this. Life changing.

hipslikecinderella · 30/06/2019 11:25

Great! Mumsnet can be so helpful.

RestingBitchFaced · 30/06/2019 11:27

In winter we don't even have the heating on through the night upstairs

I've never lived anywhere where I've had the heating on at night, why would you? Even when it's freezing outside. That's what duvets are for, plus the cost!

ChoudeBruxelles · 30/06/2019 11:28

We have a 2 1/2 storey new build. Our bedroom is basically in the room. It’s very hot as there is so much insulation in the roof. We have 3 windows in the bedroom (dual aspect and a small one at the side) all windows open all day with blinds down/curtains shut, fans on all day and then when the sun is going down open the curtains and leave windows open til we go to bed. It was ok last night

nespressowoo · 30/06/2019 11:30

We were in a new build Bellway until just before Christmas and I bloody hated it in the summer. At least 5 degrees hotter upstairs than outside. We now live in a 1930s semi and it is so much cooler!

Nettleskeins · 30/06/2019 12:11

Yes you can definitely get glass with an integral blind between the sheets of glass. I know someone whose eco-house has this, as a space spacer more than anything as it faces north...

HJWT · 30/06/2019 14:37

@RestingBitchFaced we have the heating on for out young kids?

pigsDOfly · 30/06/2019 14:42

@StoneofDestiny Yes I've never really understood it.

I don't think it's a lack of insulation as the house is well insulated from the noise of neighbours. And is pretty well built by a reputable builder.

I used to have another new build years ago that had the same problem as posters on here are describing: lovely and warm in the winter but boiling hot upstairs in the summer.

It was miserable, you just couldn't cool down.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 30/06/2019 15:12

We are currently sitting in semi darkness with the curtains in the bay window at one end of the room (facing west) closed completely and the curtains almost completely closed across the patio doors at the other end. I'm too hot to even get up and see what the temperature is but my guess is at least 32 degrees, it is definitely cooler than upstairs though and the sofa will be my bed for the time being.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 30/06/2019 15:14

1930's 3 bed semi

sandragreen · 30/06/2019 15:21

we have the heating on for out young kids

I think that is really unusual. I have never had my heating on all night other than a couple of times in the middle of a few snowy days. I am sure I don't know anyone who does this in the UK Confused

Anyway, I am in a lovely cool new build. Always sleep under my duvet even it has been a hot sunny day. Never have any problems sleeping.

BlueberriesAndCream · 30/06/2019 17:20

What's frustrating is when it's hotter inside than out, and yet still opening the windows doesn't help as it's hard to get airflow through. 28 in here at the moment, but only 23 outside

Lellikelly26 · 30/06/2019 17:26

My DH actually put an extractor fan in our loft it gets the hot air out and keeps the house much cooler. We already had vents in through the roof, he put an extractor fan in high up to get the hot air out then put a fan in lower to bring in cooler air in. It’s on a timer overnight 10pm to 4am so the top fan doesn’t over heat. It’s made a huge difference we haven’t had to use air conditioning units this year

Forkinguglyandproud · 30/06/2019 17:37

Am I the only one who thinks this post is ironic? Not the posters fault, but modern builds are built to be well insulated, energy efficient etc, yet if they're like this in summer and people have to put fans on, extractors in etc, I think the new builds have defeated this purpose 😁😁.

RottnestFerry · 30/06/2019 18:13

As somebody has already mentioned, opening the loft hatch, if you have one, and opening ground floor windows or doors will promote natural convection and draw cooler air in.

suzy2b · 30/06/2019 18:21

FROUBY Gas bill cheap i don't call £45 cheap i pay £25 pcm
Who has their heating on over night

bubblegumunicorn · 30/06/2019 18:22

We own a fan... also open windows at both ends of house and keep doors open to create a draft new builds are just houses but they are well insulated so you have to air them out more in the summer but literally we’re sitting with the fan on because the oven is too hot and heating the whole house up right now I feel your pain!

Frouby · 30/06/2019 18:27

@suzy2b I find it cheap. Family of 4, always have plenty of hot water, gas stove, heating. Previously paid a lot more in an older property and was still bloody freezing so £45 pcm is cheap especially when we are never cold. I also work from home so not like it can be stood cold until 4pm either.

blankcheque · 30/06/2019 18:32

30 degrees c in my sons bedroom, said our baby monitor last night. We are in a new build town house. We have our bedrooms are on the top floor and our lounge on the middle, kitchen on the ground floor.

It's always hot up at the top due to the heat rising and because our boiler cupboard up there doubles up as a Sauna. The rest of the house is ok. Plus we have some just decorative none opening windows on our hallways Angry.

Lots of houses have added aircon, but we can't afford it and it's horrible.

careroftwins · 30/06/2019 18:34

I have a Redrow house and love it as it is so cheap to heat and very well built. It was 33c yesterday. At bedtime I opened the velux in the en suite and left the door slightly open and opened the front windows with the blind down. We slept with just a sheet. It was fine.

manicmij · 30/06/2019 18:34

It's all down to the level of insulation a d materials used in new builds. I had to get rid of my heavy duvets as even in winter far too warm. I have wooden slated blinds and roman blinds on some bedroom windows and wooden shutter blinds on others. The shutters work best at keeping heat out. Have you turned radiators off upstairs. Even towels in bathrooms are drying in this heat with no heated towel rails. Open windows, keep bedroom doors open to allow draught to circulate.

Mamabear12 · 30/06/2019 18:35

I would invest in a portable air con

shoesarefab · 30/06/2019 19:04

@icantbreathehelp I’m in a redrow, it’s actually nowhere near as bad as the house I was living in this time last year. My last house was built around 1910 and it’s possible that it was the gateway to hell. Everyone would say “oh it’s hot everywhere” like I was exaggerating. Then they’d come into my house and be like “oh fuck, it’s out of control in here”. Some weird anomaly, the house next door was awful too. I bought one of those air conditioning units from Argos. Worth every penny!

artyone · 30/06/2019 19:20

My house (100 years old) has been cool. I can only imagine it’s because it has no insulation anywhere and the roof isn’t lined. Things I previously thought of as being a problem
