To ask how are people not dying in new builds with the heat?

Our new build is a fu..ing joke!! We are actually going to have to sell our house before next year or live downstairs because it is so hot upstairs at night that a newborn baby would over heat and end up in hospital without a doubt!

How the hell are people coping with the heat in new builds? We live in a redrow house, we have to shut all the blackout blinds at the back and open all the windows at the front and even with 2 metal fans on its still like sitting in a sauna! I don't want to go to sleep because I am scared DC is going to over heat.

I cant cope 🥵🥵🥵

Not all new builds are so hot. I'm very sensitive to heat and it's certainly very warm and I've had a tower fan on, but that level of heat is beyond what I'd expect.

Anarchyshake · 28/06/2019 22:34

I'm in a ground floor newbuild flat. I have to have the windows wide open all day and night (it's a bastarding remembering to close them all when I pop out).

I have a problem with overheating all year round, which I know is not normal. But I totally feel you.

I'm waiting for a time when I can afford an air-con unit.

ofred · 28/06/2019 22:35

Why is a new build hotter than a normal house?

justtheonethen · 28/06/2019 22:35

Have you got those little flip down vents at the top of the windows? If so make sure they are all open. I don't find our new build as warm in the summer as our last older house but it is toasty in the winter.

LastMinuteInvitation · 28/06/2019 22:35

Do your neighbours have the same issue?

SunkissedCherry · 28/06/2019 22:35

We live in a new build block of apartments. We are on the top (2nd) floor. It’s like a sauna!!

NeverHadANickname · 28/06/2019 22:36

Can you get air conditioning? I know it can be expensive but presumably cheaper than moving house. Plus you will always have it when needed and can take with you if you do move. I absolutely hate the heat so you have my sympathy.

icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:37

@LastMinuteInvitation yes they do! X

Probably the same way people cope in upper flats. Ie, badly.

Bisset · 28/06/2019 22:38

What are you doing with blinds/windows?

You should keeps blinds/curtains and windows closed for as long as possible during the day.

In the evening, when the temp cools off a little, open the blinds/curtains and as many windows as poss to try to get a through draft.

Have you tried that?

cathycassidy · 28/06/2019 22:38

Yanbu!! I’m not coping at all, it gets so hot in my house despite having fans, blinds, windows open
Dreading tomorrow as it’s 32c here

icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:38

@ofred all of the insulation iv been told (we also have solar panels)

Apparently some people take some insulation out of the attic...

In winter we don't even have the heating on through the night upstairs.

OP posts:
icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:40

@Bisset I think if we didn't have our black out blinds shut whilst the sun was out we would all just have to move out, iv never experienced heat like it!

OP posts:
LastMinuteInvitation · 28/06/2019 22:40

Poor you. That sounds like hell. Of course good insulation is important but not to the extent that it makes homes dangerous to live in.

TakenForSlanted · 28/06/2019 22:41

Simples: overtime!

My employer has kindly opted to lease a fully air-conditioned suite of offices.

I get to work at 7am and leave at 9pm - and while I do have stuff to do, it's mostly down to the fact that my so-called home doubles as a functioning sauna but without the pool bit these days.

icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:41

@LastMinuteInvitation its just insane! When I was growing up my room was an attic conversion and we all know how hot they are! This is on another level completely....

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 28/06/2019 22:41

Not just new builds.

Is sleeping downstairs an option? Maybe invest in a sofa bed for the nights it's too warm upstairs. It would be cheaper than moving.

Or you could get some ceiling fans for the bedrooms. Put them on in the evenings an hour or so before bed with windows open to cool the room.

icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:42

@TakenForSlanted any vacancies ? 😁😂

SpoonBlender · 28/06/2019 22:42

We live in a stone building built in the 1870s. It's been fucking roasting at night three times this last week, we've slept downstairs.

Brit houses are built with 'keep the heat in' insulation to cope with wet and cold and wind, not with full on 'all weathers' to manage both hot and cold. Might have to be changes to the building regs in the future...

TheCraicDealer · 28/06/2019 22:42

We open the windows at the front and back of the house to create a through draft and draw the blinds partially to block most of the direct sunlight. Our house is really well insulated (so much so I've had to open the windows in the living area on Xmas day) but it's been fine.

ItchySeveredFoot · 28/06/2019 22:43

Open the loft hatch if you have one. Let's some of the heat escape. Worked for us last year during the heat wave.

icantbreathehelp · 28/06/2019 22:43

@SpoonBlender yes 100%, DH wants air con installing!

OP posts:
TwoleftUggs · 28/06/2019 22:43

My house is 100 years old and equally as hot as you’ve described. If you have a loft hatch, open it. Heat rises so it’s somewhere for it to escape to.

Frouby · 28/06/2019 22:43

New build eco house here. Its like a bleeding oven in the summer. I do all the cooling techniques like blinds drawn and windows closed when it's hotter outside. And it's still ridiculously hot in the afternoon. House is south facing as well.

We have fans in the bedrooms and it just tends to circulate the warm air.

The gas bill is ridiculously cheap though. So that's something I suppose. £45 pcm, 3 bedroom family of 4.

Inforthelonghaul · 28/06/2019 22:45

Do you have a loft hatch? When my house gets too hot we open ours and all the hot air goes up into the loft so the bedrooms stay cooler.
