To just say nothing...?

Hi all - new member looking for some advice, am I being unreasonable?

I was sold a car by a dealership and bought the 3 month warranty. On the day of purchase, the car developed a fault and I returned it, and they are currently fixing it, and on my verbal request they got a courtesy car from a sub-contracted garage for me to use in the meantime.

This morning I noticed a couple of long scratches down the passenger side of my courtesy car. They aren't deep, but I genuinely have no recollection of doing them, as I have only driven it on main roads and can't think of a time when they could have happened. I genuinely believe the were not caused by myself. However, I didn't immediately notice them when I picked up the car, and therefore didn't take photos of them to prove they were already there, meaning that I will more than likely be liable for their repair.

That being said, I did was not given anything to sign at all before taking the courtesy car, they just gave me the keys and let me drive it off. Therefore I have no information regarding excess, nor did I sign to say I would pay for repairs in the event of the car's damage, and therefore I am (rightly or wrongly) guessing it is covered by the garage's insurance?

I've been advised to say nothing, return the car and just "assume" (for lack of a better word), that the car was scratched previous to me driving it. If the want to claim I damaged it, they will have to prove it wasn't scratched before I drove it which is near enough impossible as I didn't sign anything to say that I agreed with the condition the car was being handed to me in.
