To think £140 electric usage a month is insane?

Gummybear11 · 27/06/2019 12:44

Just want to get an idea, we are a family of four, living in a 2 bed new build house with so called economic air pump heating. Eon reckons we use £140 a month averaged out over the year.
Is this insane or is this how much electric costs these days?

Wow that is a lot!!

I'm a 3-bed terrace, about 15 years old and we pay approx £60-70 a month dependent on usage. Three adults.

MyOpinionIsValid · 27/06/2019 12:46

Do you also have gas?

I'd say combined costs are average 120-140 . Ours top 300 and DH is on blood thinners, feels the cold and is currently under a duvet in an armchair. Heating ais always on full pelt. Its unhealthy

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/06/2019 12:48

I’d say that is very high, but does the electricity run everything? Gas is about the third of the price of electricity per unit of energy.

OvalCanvas · 27/06/2019 12:48

That's a lot. We pay about £60pm for our 3 bed flat.

Cannyhandleit · 27/06/2019 12:48

We are a family of 4 in a relatively new build, we have a pre payment meter for our electric (massive pain in the arse) and we use £30-£50 a month. EON are having a laugh!

midgeland · 27/06/2019 12:49

3 bed flat, £85 a month direct debit and I'm currently in credit with them despite a cold winter. And we don't have a gas supply here so that includes hot water and not-very-efficient storage heaters as well.

Gummybear11 · 27/06/2019 12:49

No gas, just electric. 😩

OP posts:
TwattingDog · 27/06/2019 12:49

Is that the first assessment, based on their imaginary figures or based on previous occupancy usage?

Do you use gas as well?

Our combined bills for 2 people in a mid-terrace 3 bed are £65/month.

What is your daily standing charge? Are you at the end of your contract and comr to the basic or standard tariff? Have you compared your deal?

I'm shamelessly plugging Bulb at the moment, as I love their service and my bills keep going down. £50 referral bonus each if you (or anyone else!) were to use my link Grin www.bulb.me/allisong2180 Yes I'm this shameless.

Pigletthedog · 27/06/2019 12:49

It does seem like a lot. We are a family of 5, 4 bed detached horribly energy-inefficient house, 1 person working from home. Our combined gas and electricity is £180 a month

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 27/06/2019 12:51

We’re having the same problem with EON, ours is a two bed terraced and they say we’re about the same as you, keep upping the payments to pull back a deficit but the deficit keeps going up, god knows what’s going on!

LunaAzul · 27/06/2019 12:52

We're in a 4 bed new build, I WFH so electric is used all day and our combined gas and electric is £64/month and we are in credit. It went up during the cold spell from £54/month and I was Shock at the price but maybe reading this I am just being right!

HariboLectar · 27/06/2019 12:54

I know it might be really obvious, but do you submit readings regularly or are they based on estimates?

PettyContractor · 27/06/2019 12:55

I have gas, my overall energy bill is £100 for a well-insulated three-bedroom flat in London.

I think the best heat pump technology is supposed to have roughly the same running cots as gas, so my gut instinct is that £100 a month would be a reasonable bill if I had hour house.

(For those wondering how electric heating can be as cheap as gas if electricity costs three times as much, it's because a heat pump can have output that is more than input. You aren't just creating heat out of energy consumed, you're pumping it from elsewhere.)

bellabasset · 27/06/2019 12:55

I think you need to know how many k/watt hours you are being estimated as using. Then go online and compare it with other suppliers.

I have a cob and stone house with d/g windows and my dual fuel is around £80 a month. I use around 9500 gas and 2500 electricity which is about 70% of the average usage.

So I look at high, average and low consumption in my area and see how Eon compares with other suppliers

PettyContractor · 27/06/2019 12:55

if I had your house

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 27/06/2019 12:56

Blimey that’s a lot!

We have a prepayment meter & if I put our ‘winter’ amount on each week it would only be £65 a month even if I added the gas amount (again at winter cost) you’d still only be looking £110 a month for the 2 combined. We live in a 3 bed end terrace that’s draughty as anything & I stay at home! I’d be calling them & moaning.

Gummybear11 · 27/06/2019 12:57

Yes they are based on meter readings! I am having a smart meter installed tomorrow maybe this will shed some light!! I just don't see WHAT is draining this much electric especially as this house supposedly installed with economic heating/water - water doesn't even get properly hot.

OP posts:
mrsm43s · 27/06/2019 12:58

£140 per month for all fuel costs for a house heated by electricity is probably about right. Maybe a little on the high side, but I wouldn't think significantly.

Its about £30 a week for all heating, cooking, hot water, running the washing machine, dishwasher, tv use, lap top use, phone charging etc. which seems pretty reasonable to me. How much are did you expect to pay?

It will be more expensive that some people's electricity bills, because most people have both gas and electric to pay. Its probably on a par with most people's total energy bill.

Surfingtheweb · 27/06/2019 12:59

I'm in a new build 4 bed townhouse, I have a smart meter, the most my electric has been in a month was £60, an electric heater in the garage had been left switched on, the rest of the time it's max £55 a month. That's for basically 5 adults, TVs in all rooms, & 2 people working from home a lot.
If I were you I would take monthly meter readings and keep them on w spreadsheet, you can start to track your usage & check you are on the right tariff, ie economy 7 if you need it, or not been put on that by mistake.

Gummybear11 · 27/06/2019 12:59

I rang them they had no answers for me about why it's so expensive. Just that that's what I'm using 😝

OP posts:
teyem · 27/06/2019 12:59

I pay that for gas and electricity in a 4 bed house with 5 people and I have a Nissan Leaf that I charge at home.

QforCucumber · 27/06/2019 13:01

As a family of 3 in a 3 bed new build we use £75/month combined, year round with Bulb, are E-on quite high with their standing charges/unit prices?

Gummybear11 · 27/06/2019 13:01

Thank you for all your advice! I am going to definitely track usage and 'comparethemarket' 😝

OP posts:
HJWT · 27/06/2019 13:01

@Gummybear11 We live in a 2 bed new build, we paid £63 a month with EON for BOTH!! Then they wanted to put it up to £95!!!

We pay £62 now with british gas! For both, we do turn everything of though when we go out, we have 3 fans running all night and still use the dryer twice a week....

teyem · 27/06/2019 13:01

If you have a new home does that mean you have a smart meter?
