To think £140 electric usage a month is insane?

Just want to get an idea, we are a family of four, living in a 2 bed new build house with so called economic air pump heating. Eon reckons we use £140 a month averaged out over the year.
Is this insane or is this how much electric costs these days?

We are about £140 a month for electricity and gas. Take the readings regularly.

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/06/2019 13:18

It's a lot but not stupidly so. The average energy bill in the UK is around £100 pm so if you have the heating on quite a bit, use a tumble dryer or have certain types of spotlights, or aren't on a cheap tarriff, I can see how it comes to that amount.

Dodie66 · 27/06/2019 13:18

That’s about the same as ours. 3 bed terraced all electric heating. We cut down on the heating but comparing the bill from the same quarter last year it’s the same amount. We used a lot less units but because of price increases the bill is the same.

Amanduh · 27/06/2019 13:20

Three of us in a 3 bed new build. Ours ia £40 a month.

Amanduh · 27/06/2019 13:21

(Pay £70 for heating and gas a month. We dont use a tumbler dryer but have heatig on etc and don’t limit useage)

fingernailsbitten · 27/06/2019 13:24

Eon are very expensive. I've just left them and gone to EDF.
Eon wanted me to pay over £190 per month for elc and gas. I live alone and work away fromhome full-time.

Go on a comparison site and check out other suppliers.

Good luck OP.

babybunny123 · 27/06/2019 13:27

I am with EON and they always over estimate. I live on my own and they wanted £134.00 per month for combined gas and electric. I asked to speak to a manager and suddenly my payments went down to £92.00 per month and I am still in credit. Challenge them and they will back down and reduce your payments.

Absolutechaos · 27/06/2019 13:28

We are paying about the same for combined gas/electricity in a very inefficient 5 bed semi! Although in winter we top £250pm. As our house eats fuel, we have to shop around - the best we have found is Octopus energy - not the absolute cheapest rate but fabulous to deal with (after some disasters with other utility suppliers messing up bills, double charging etc) and recommended by Which. Yes, it is a shameless plug but we did a LOT of research! If anyone is looking to swap - if you use this link you will get a £50 credit: share.octopus.energy/lucky-rhino-735

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 27/06/2019 13:31

We live in a very old house, which is more open plan downstairs than it was designed to be. Our combined gas and electric bill is £164 a month, that's more than usual because I'm on mat leave and we have a six month old, so the heating was on all winter and I'm doing a dozen loads of laundry every half an hour (feels like it) . We also had a boiler issue for a couple of weeks that meant it was constantly firing, so that added to the total. Pre DS we were paying about £135 a month and we both working full time, so yours seems normal to me.

MediocreOmens · 27/06/2019 13:36

We have this problem. We do have gas but the energy company refuse to lower our DD from £120 a month even though for the past 6 months our energetic bills have been between £30-60. I have a big credit with them. When I looked at moving supplier they were all insisting on a DD of around £120 a month. We've never been in arrears, our credit ratings are good. I hypothesised that they are all using the massive credits to earn interest on.

Megan2018 · 27/06/2019 13:39

We pay about £120 with air source heating, large 3 bed and an electric car.
Are you using the heating system efficiently? They can take a while to get used to.

Myheartbelongsto · 27/06/2019 13:40

Currently paying 305 euro a month for electric in Ireland..... Kill me

Screamanger · 27/06/2019 13:43

Air pumps are not as cheap as they are made out to be.

We pay $91USD a month on a large 3 bed

bloodywhitecat · 27/06/2019 13:44

Are you with the best supplier? I cut my electricity bill considerably by moving from E.ON to Bulb.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 27/06/2019 13:48

We pay £99 a month for electricity .... 3/4 bed semi, two teens who shower constantly, leave lights on all night and think it’s a good idea to put the washing machine on a long wash for one pair of jeans Hmm

bridgetreilly · 27/06/2019 14:01

I only have electricity and so it is more expensive. I'm in a smaller house than you and there's only one of me, but my average works out at about £60-70/month. I'm with Bulb, and I like that it's easy for me to control my monthly payments because everywhere assumes that you have gas and therefore your electricity is more or less constant through the year, whereas obviously mine is much more in the winter when I have the heating on.

My guess would be that they have estimated your yearly use based on the last six months which will mostly have been winter and so higher than usual. It can take a while to work out what a sensible monthly payment actually is.

bridgetreilly · 27/06/2019 14:02

It's really really not worth comparing with people who have gas as well as electricity, btw. That doesn't tell you anything about what's a realistic bill for your situation.

Rezie · 27/06/2019 14:08

I pay about €10-15/month. 1 bedroom flat, 2 people.

anyusernamesnotused · 27/06/2019 14:09

I hate to tell you this OP but it is probably correct. Any chance its a NIBE? I have the same issue. Warm air electric heating - 3 bed new build. Currently costing between £150 - 200 per month.

If it is a NIBE I STRONGLY recommend you get a maintenance plan on it. They won't cover mine. It's broken and nobody wants to fix it (not and give me any kind of warranty anyway) and I refuse to pay out upwards of £1500 for it to potentially go wrong again.

My neighbours are starting to rip theirs out and replace with standard electric boilers but I don't think the electric is much cheaper.

Sorry (wish I had better news) if you get chance put a Rip off Britain NIBE search into google...

Megan2018 · 27/06/2019 15:56

@anyusernamesnotused
not all air source heat pumps use warm air electric heating?

We have underfloor heating downstairs and conventional radiators upstairs (apart from bathrooms which are underfloor). Ours Air source heat pump is a Samsung and it's brilliant.

As I said up thread - we heat a large 3 bed (147sqm) and run an electric car for £120pcm and we have no gas so this includes cooking.

cannotmakemymindup · 27/06/2019 16:02

I am in an old 2 bed house think 1800s with storage heaters and we only just now are on 105pm. Thats economy 7 which is expensive for lots of people so I'm in shock a new build is that much!!

LoafofSellotape · 27/06/2019 16:04

If that's heating as well I don't think it's outrageous, we pay £120 a month electric and gas, about £40 of that is gas. We have the heating on very little.

blackteasplease · 27/06/2019 16:07

Yeah I had this. They start you off ridiculously high and then you have to keep an eye on it and keep taking it down or getting refunds.

OddHoleySocks · 27/06/2019 16:10

I pay £130 with air source heat pump in a 3 bed house with fewer people. No gas here either.

Seems fair.

Crazyladee · 27/06/2019 16:14

We're in a 20 year old 4 bed detached. 5 people electricity and gas but we only use about £20 worth of gas per month . We pay £160 per month with Scottish Power. . It was £190 per month but we were always in credit but I managed to get it down.

Our electricity is fairly high due to our showers are powered by electricity and we have two teenagers who like long leisurely showers. I'm also guilty of tumble drying throughout the winter months.
