How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

I don’t think “we” the public would be as disgruntled if the country hadn’t been through such austerity, our services and education decimated, upsurge in homelessness, mental health services unable to cope etc etc etc. I remember thinking how when Prince George was born, William kind of disappeared from public life and gave up his “day job”. He performs his public duties 😐. Really, with all the Royals doing their public duties, I felt envious that he could do that and I had juggle three jobs when DS was six months old, just to make ends meet. It’s the HUGE gap that pisses me off.

I think, for their personal homes, they should buy/renovate and upkeep them, themselves out of their civil list monies and personal wealth.

DontPressSendTooSoon · 27/06/2019 10:34

Unless nicking your wealth off medieval peasants is what counts as entrepreneurship these days

Hasn't that always counted as entrepreneurship?

Bandara · 27/06/2019 11:03

The Royal family are not anybody special. They are just descended from a family that were more brutal than other families a long time ago, and took all the wealth. They are laughing at us. We shouldnt even have this particular line of people - who are not even direct descendants. We only got them because the last king moved off for a life of jollies in France with his woman.

Whisky2014 · 27/06/2019 11:14

I think people are really naive re. Royal family.
Here's a link to a financial report carried out by Brand Financial. brandfinance.com/press-releases/valued-at-67-billion-the-monarchy-is-britains-greatest-treasure/

The sun wrote an article regarding anither financial report in 2017 stating the royal family generated £550 Million from tourism that year.
The op basically writing off the royal families impression to tourism is just plain ignorance.

Khaleesi3 · 27/06/2019 11:20

Agreed, it’s just not economically feasible.

LaurieMarlow · 27/06/2019 11:25

Think is the tourism argument can be spun anyway you like, there’s no objective criteria for assessing it.

There’s circumstantial evidence from other countries that getting rid of monarchies are even better for Tourism than having them.

You can’t make any concrete arguments either way.

Laurajjj · 27/06/2019 11:27

I suspect Megan is becoming a bit of a Yoko Ono in the royal family in the way Wills and Harry seem to have lost that common bond since her arrival on the scene. Getting morally fickle about state visits and spending xxx amounts of millions of taxpayers money on redecoration doesn't help her cause really.

ralfeesmum · 27/06/2019 11:30

And you can betcha that a lot of firms involved in this renovation will have gifted a whole load of stuff(for free!) just to schmooze the Royals and attract the kudos that just breathing the same air as the Royal Family bestows upon one......to them that already have tons shall be given even more and more.

Yuk!

PineappleFwitters · 27/06/2019 11:52

Getting morally fickle about state visits

She is on maternity leave! And yes, she attended the Trooping but that seems to be the one event people attend regardless.

Though quite frankly I wish the royals WOULD get more "morally fickle" about who they meet - Trump isn't even the worst they've played host to. Perhaps this will change with Charles and William.

EdtheBear · 27/06/2019 11:54

Do you honestly think the construction industry is that shallow to gift stuff to the Royals for free?

£2.3m on a house is a lot of cash, I've no doubt lots of specialist restorers were involved. They are not cheap and will be highly unlikely to give stuff for free.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2019 12:03

Errrr ... www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/prince-charles-criticised-over-misguided-2851797

Laurajjj · 27/06/2019 12:09

Yes they are morally fickle. On one hand they are getting all moral about Trump (she definitely did snub him), but on the other hand spending vast amounts of taxpayers money on a redecoration job just because you have fallen out with Wills and Catherine.

Itssosunny · 27/06/2019 12:15

Why is everyone attacking Meghan and not Harry? Do you really think that she can do whatever she wants to? Sure she can't and and he, more than anyone else knows what not to do not to upset public. He may just not care.

I would bet money that it was The Queen’s call to keep Meghan away from Trump.

Say what you like, she’s all over the diplomacy and she may have deemed it wise to avoid any potential controversy.

Itssosunny · 27/06/2019 12:29

I bet Harry knew there would be a public outcry and bullying coming from tabloids with regards to their spendings yet it looks like they live in a bubble and don't care. He knows perfectly what to do/sau and what not to do/say.

Itssosunny · 27/06/2019 12:34

Anyway, who cares? They live in a bubble and are happy there are still plenty of plebs in the 21st century who will be waiting for a week in a tent in any weather just to take a glimpse of them. Sounds pathetic but it is a reality.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2019 12:48

Why is everyone attacking Meghan and not Harry?

An odd thing to ask, given that the vast majority of posts on here have referred to "Meghan and Harry", "H&M" or just plain "they"

Do you honestly think the construction industry is that shallow to gift stuff to the Royals for free?

Frankly it's hard to know where to start, but on the subject of commercial enterprises, Porcelanosa, the Troika Dialog Cem Uzan are just a few names which reward a little research. Of course we'd be told that all this chiselling is done in the name of charity ... and anyone who'd believe that would probably believe anything

Bandara · 27/06/2019 12:49

@itssosunny they are not just any Rich family. We do not pay for any other rich family. It says that the Royal family took 82 million pounds of tax payer money last year.

Bandara · 27/06/2019 12:50

@Whisky2014 tourism to all the palaces in France did not stop when the Royal Family were removed ( again due to extravagant spending while people were suffering), so there is no tourism argument.

Whisky2014 · 27/06/2019 12:54

Well they do contribute to the economy because they need thousands of staff who are all being paid and paying taxes which then goes back into the economyanyway, the crux is people thinking 2million is alot of money and it just isn't!

Whisky2014 · 27/06/2019 12:56

I would bet money that it was The Queen’s call to keep Meghan away from Trump.

She was on maternity leave..

Bandara · 27/06/2019 12:57

@whiskey2014 it is a huge amount of money for three people, when there are 320,000 homeless people, and child homelessness and poverty is on the rise. When I think of a child running around homeless in rags, and I think of those two spending 2.5 million on their house, it makes me feel sick

Whisky2014 · 27/06/2019 12:59

Just one line in the report "Monarchy’s annual contribution to the UK economy in 2017 is £1.766bn"

There is no argument here. People just don't like the RF and want to use 2 million as an excuse to moan about them. Whatever
