How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

Read it yourself. The Crown Estates belong to the legal entity of ‘The Crown’. Not a person and not Elizabeth Windsor.

It’s managed by an independent body, she has no authority to sell it, she has no rights to it if she ceases to fulfil the function of ‘The Crown’.

Either we have a royal family and they have an estate of properties to live in or we don’t

Frogmore is the property of the queen as is Buckingham place - both needed renovations and both will cost vast amounts of money

Get rid of the royals and have a president

Or keep the royal family and put up with all of it

But don’t complain about a house belonging to the queen being renovated to be lived in if you want her to stay on the throne and a succession

LoeweHammockBuyItDoIt · 25/06/2019 18:43

lol at finding kate plain. That's hilarious

Cornettoninja · 25/06/2019 18:45

At least we see where the royal family spends its money; I’m more concerned about the millions this government pisses up the wall and gets no where near the same media attention.

It’s almost like it’s a distraction.....

Piglet89 · 25/06/2019 18:46

@alsohuman

MN has a massively disproportionate number of republicans. In the real world, 70% of the population supports a monarchy.

I imagine this is because the Mumsnet demographic (judging purely by the quality of writing and expression of thought in the majority of posts) comprises mainly well-educated, intelligent, inquisitive, analytical individuals - not reflective of the general population, I’m afraid.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 18:48

I quite like Meghan but I find Kate very mediocre and plain.

Why does it matter about a royals personal features? I take it your talking about features rather than characteristics unless you know the Duchess

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 25/06/2019 18:49

She is not the owner, mummy2017 .

The Crown Estate is owned by The Crown. The Crown is, basically, the state. Our state, which we collectively own. The Queen is both a person in her own right and the living embodiment of the state.

We, essentially, own The Crown Estate. So yes, it’s our money that’s forked out Meghan and Harry’s renovation costs.

LizzieMacQueen · 25/06/2019 18:49

I just find it odd that it's called a cottage.

caringcarer · 25/06/2019 18:49

I actually thought the tax payer paid for their security which is fair enough but they were supposed to pay for house themselves. They should not be handed tax payers cash when people cannot have cystic fibrosis drugs to extend their lives. It is immoral.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 18:49

Pigle89 I’m neither royalist or republicans, but compare the cost of the president of France or U.S and the royal family and see which is cheaper would be interesting

mummmy2017 · 25/06/2019 18:50

The Crown Estate belongs to the reigning monarch 'in right of The Crown', that is, it is owned by the monarch for the duration of their reign, by virtue of their accession to the throne. But it is not the private property of the monarch - it cannot be sold by the monarch, nor do revenues from it belong to the monarch.
They then return 15% of the profits

dollyandshirl · 25/06/2019 18:51

a president? who would you choose? Boris? Hunt? May? Cameron? Corbyn? Milliband? Blair? hahahahaha

like it or not we are a constitutional monarchy, changing that would be an utter mess and we've just proved we can't even cope with Brexit after over 3 years of faffing. I'm not keen on my DC growing up in the People's Republic of Fucking It Up on top of that.

LaurieMarlow · 25/06/2019 18:53

But it is not the private property of the monarch - it cannot be sold by the monarch, nor do revenues from it belong to the monarch.

Exactly

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 25/06/2019 18:55

Frogmore is the property of the queen as is Buckingham place

Nope.

I have no problem with Harry & Meghan having a home renovated for them. It’s also sensible for them to have one at Windsor where there’s already heavy security.

What is absurd is that a house with (apparently) four bedrooms and a nursery requires £3m (likely total cost) spent on it. You could knock it down and build another one for less than that.

They haven’t just had it renovated - they’ve had it turned into some kind of mini-palace.

But given that Meghan thinks nothing of spending over £1m a year on bits of cloth to drape herself in, why is anyone surprised?

mummmy2017 · 25/06/2019 18:56

If the Crown Estate . Who I copied it from say it is owned by the Queen, how come you know better ....Biscuit

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 25/06/2019 18:59

Yes, mummy2017. You’ve confirmed what I said without realising that you have.

The monarch is the living representation of the state. The state belongs to us.

This is why it’s The Crown vs Joe Blogs in court cases. That is why the Queen is on our bank notes and stamps. She’s the representative of the state...therefore us.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 18:59

Coffee

So the queen doesn’t own Buckingham place - care to explain who does?

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 25/06/2019 19:00

I don’t know better...I understand it better.

CoffeeToffeeFudge · 25/06/2019 19:01

Ivykate

The Crown Estate.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 19:01

Coffee we are not a “state” we are a country

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 19:02

And what is the crown estate?

Alsohuman · 25/06/2019 19:02

@ivykaty44, is your Google broken?

mummmy2017 · 25/06/2019 19:03

No Coffee. The page said she OWNED it...
Twist it how you like.... But in this case your wrong.

ivykaty44 · 25/06/2019 19:05

also human - no
The crown estate is owned by the monarch so it’s one and the same, either the king or queen do own Buckingham place and Frogmore
