Read it yourself. The Crown Estates belong to the legal entity of ‘The Crown’. Not a person and not Elizabeth Windsor.

It’s managed by an independent body, she has no authority to sell it, she has no rights to it if she ceases to fulfil the function of ‘The Crown’.

Either we have a royal family and they have an estate of properties to live in or we don’t

MN has a massively disproportionate number of republicans. In the real world, 70% of the population supports a monarchy.

I imagine this is because the Mumsnet demographic (judging purely by the quality of writing and expression of thought in the majority of posts) comprises mainly well-educated, intelligent, inquisitive, analytical individuals - not reflective of the general population, I’m afraid.

I quite like Meghan but I find Kate very mediocre and plain.

I’m getting slightly bored of the posters who keep saying that people are picking on Meghan and it’s all racist, when exactly the same has happened with Kate. A very quick search shows these past threads and Daily Mail news stories. There are plenty more. The fact is, people pick up on what’s happening currently, naturally.

The Crown Estate is owned by The Crown. The Crown is, basically, the state. Our state, which we collectively own. The Queen is both a person in her own right and the living embodiment of the state.

We, essentially, own The Crown Estate. So yes, it’s our money that’s forked out Meghan and Harry’s renovation costs.

I actually thought the tax payer paid for their security which is fair enough but they were supposed to pay for house themselves. They should not be handed tax payers cash when people cannot have cystic fibrosis drugs to extend their lives. It is immoral.

But it is not the private property of the monarch - it cannot be sold by the monarch, nor do revenues from it belong to the monarch.

I have no problem with Harry & Meghan having a home renovated for them. It’s also sensible for them to have one at Windsor where there’s already heavy security.

What is absurd is that a house with (apparently) four bedrooms and a nursery requires £3m (likely total cost) spent on it. You could knock it down and build another one for less than that.

They haven’t just had it renovated - they’ve had it turned into some kind of mini-palace.

But given that Meghan thinks nothing of spending over £1m a year on bits of cloth to drape herself in, why is anyone surprised?

This is why it’s The Crown vs Joe Blogs in court cases. That is why the Queen is on our bank notes and stamps. She’s the representative of the state...therefore us.
