How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

I’ll defend Buckingham Palace to the death, the afternoon I spent there was wonderful. I absolutely got my £1.24’s worth that day.

ScreamingValenta · 25/06/2019 16:42

This kind of thing is exactly why I am a republican. It's not just Meghan and Harry - in fact, M & H are far from the worst offenders - money is squandered on the Royals as if there were no tomorrow - thousands pissed away on interior decor, flowers, fancy cars - while so many ordinary people struggle to make ends meet. It's so hypocritical that the Royals patronise charities and try to raise funds for the needy, while squandering so much on luxuries for themselves. It disgusts me.

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2019 16:44

Buckinham palace is like the White house an official residence it needs upkept i(is that a word) knocking 5 aparetments into one is taking the piss

winge · 25/06/2019 16:55

So much confusion on here about the funding and sources of funding of the monarchy--and no surprise there as that's exactly the aim. We will never get a straight answer about how much they cost us, probably because they know it would cause outrage. But one important fact to emerge today is that their net expenditure has risen by £20 m in one year.

Regarding the Crown Estates, in centuries past, the revenue was used by the monarchy to cover all the costs of government, but when in the 1700s the wars and running the state became too costly, the crown estates were transferred to the govt. in exchange for the govt. taking on the costs of the state and the monarchy receiving a cushy income instead.

Anyway, I think we're right to ask questions, particularly about how much, if any, responsibility we have to fund minor members of the Royal Family, and where it stops.

presumedinnocence · 25/06/2019 17:01

Harry and Meghan's tone-deaf ostentation, combined with their cliched, influencer-style social media output, tell you everything you need to know about them.

It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so determined to present themselves as humanitarians.

LastChanceFinalOffer · 25/06/2019 17:10

I quite like Meghan but I find Kate very mediocre and plain. Nothing personal but I would have loved to see William and Harry marry real royal princesses instead of 'commoners'. I guess the pool is too small for that to happen.

PineappleFwitters · 25/06/2019 17:14

I don't think there were any their age around @LastChanceFinalOffer!

presumedinnocence · 25/06/2019 17:17

Charlotte Casiraghi?

presumedinnocence · 25/06/2019 17:17

Although I doubt she'd have wanted to marry either of them!

LaurieMarlow · 25/06/2019 17:19

I would have loved to see William and Harry marry real royal princesses instead of 'commoners'.

Why?

happyhillock · 25/06/2019 17:20

Just been on the news, the Royal Family spent £82m last year, the money that the economy made from Harry and Meghan's wedding is the £3m there getting to spent on Frogmore, £85m will go a hell of a long way to help the poor and needy.

Haworthia · 25/06/2019 17:26

I would have loved to see William and Harry marry real royal princesses instead of 'commoners'.

Why?

Because they want the European royal houses to have an even shallower gene pool than they already do? Because they want Queen Victoria’s haemophilia gene to make a reappearance?

I quite like Meghan but I find Kate very mediocre and plain.

😂😂😂

She’s 5’ 9”, supermodel thin, has beautiful long hair, perfect skin and teeth, lovely features - who the fuck do you look like, if she’s “plain”?!

herculepoirot2 · 25/06/2019 17:36

I quite like Meghan but I find Kate very mediocre and plain.

You must think the rest of us are like bridge dwelling goblins.

Dothedamnthang · 25/06/2019 17:50

Why single out these two when we pay ridiculous amounts for the lot of them? The idea of monarchy is laid firmly on the foundation of piss taking, it's neither new nor should it be hard to understand.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/06/2019 17:51

We will never get a straight answer about how much they cost us, probably because they know it would cause outrage

Indeed

It's worth remembering that their kind of money buys a lot of PR and good accountants, and that they have generations' worth of experience to call on when it comes to pulling the wool over the public's eyes

cathf · 25/06/2019 17:53

ScreamingValenta, my thoughts exactly.
It's the ease in which they can spend. Don't want to live in London? No problem, here is a 10 bedroom mansion you can renovate exactly as you wish with no limit to costs. Three children? Of course they can be sent to the best schools at no pain to you. Fancy a holiday? Go where you want, when you want, again at no concern for the cost. It is outrageous in 2019 that one family is so revered with absolutely nothing to base the adoration on.
But I do cringe at pps who constantly try to shut conversations like this down by calling racism.
I am old enough to remember Sarah Ferguson, who had a much harder time than any of the current younger Royals.
Megan are Harry are criticised because they are extravagant and precious and try to use the benefits of being in the family without putting up with any of the disadvantages, for no other reason.

Figgygal · 25/06/2019 18:01

All this money that people are saying would be better off spent on elderly care, NHS, homelessness etc wouldn't exist of the monarchy was abolished because a lot of it is coming from the Queen herself. Also as we know public money is squandered and misappropriated constantly so even if it wasn't being spent on maintaining the royal family and many people have already listed what that actually means in reality it'd be being pissed away through bureaucracy and mishandling

AnnaNimmity · 25/06/2019 18:07

I'd be interested to know how much money is actually attracted to the country as a direct result of the queen. I suspect most people would still come here and spend their money.

And even if you accept the Queen is bringing in tourism and income, the rest of the leeches aren't.

annabelle1992 · 25/06/2019 18:08

@LastChanceFinalOffer seriously you better look like a Victoria's Secret angel to find Kate plain!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/06/2019 18:10

Fancy a holiday? Go where you want, when you want, again at no concern for the cost

... especially if you can tag it onto a day spent being fawned over working at some worthy cause, in an attempt to pretend it's really a "working trip"

Again, a president could well try to do the same - but in a democracy such as we're supposed to be, a president can be got rid of

EdWinchester · 25/06/2019 18:28

It's crazy, but no worse than the millions spent by Kate and william on their 2 homes.

I'm another that would like to see the royal family abolished.

LaurieMarlow · 25/06/2019 18:29

because a lot of it is coming from the Queen herself.

No it isn’t, crown estate money isn’t her money.

The ignorance around this is astounding. Having said that, I suspect the complexity of the financial arrangements really works in her favour.

mummmy2017 · 25/06/2019 18:32

The Queen as our crowned monarch is gifted the Crown Estates. It goes to whom ever wears the crown ..
She can not sell anything, but she is the owner ...Read the page.

England could easily exist as a country The UK hasn't broken up yet.
