He's 5 and I've read really conflicting things. We're going to a cottage in the country for a long weekend and it has one. I know at our gym it states no under 8s but then the one at the local council pool doesn't have an age restriction.

I'd bring him in with me and make sure he doesn't spend too long in there. I think the gym probably don't want unruly kids flinging themselves in or staying in so long they get dizzy.

Young kids cant control their body temp as well as us adults and so you just have to keep an eye that they are not getting too hot or and this will sound funny but too cold. So short bursts should be ok.

If he's not likely to swallow water then probably fine for one 'cycle' if you are in with him, he will then need to get out and keep hydrated.

Thanks, that's what my gut was telling me. Short periods and make sure he drinks a lot of water and not get too hot. He categorically will not put his head under but I'll make sure he knows he can't drink it at all. DS is very sensible and I won't let him in without me.
