To be shocked at how many people use the "pull out method" to try to avoid pregnancy?

Long time member, first thread.

I have seen quite a few people claim to use the pull out method to avoid pregnancy... Am I only one who thinks this is insane and very unreliable?

I know no contraception is 100% and of course there are contraception failures but I think of all the methods that could be used, "pulling out" is not very viable? I've known a few who have got pregnant this way and am surprised at how many actually rely on this method.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's a great form of contraception if at all.

There was an almost identical thread to this a couple of weeks ago.

I don’t think it’s a reliable method but many people on that thread said they’d used it for years and it worked fine for them. I just think they were very lucky but what do I know 🤷🏻‍♀️.

PutThatDown10 · 24/06/2019 13:30

Oh I didn't see that thread...

Ah see I find that quite surprising, I do think it's rather risky and would much rather use a more reliable form.

It doesn't work. He'll be 16 next week Grin that said my second was conceived using 2 methods of contraception.

donajimena · 24/06/2019 13:30

*despite using

PutThatDown10 · 24/06/2019 13:31

I've noticed there's a thread on here today though where it has been used and failed.

Mine was conceived on the pill, but I was ill and didn't realise my illness had affected it.

I now use 2 forms just in case.

It can work if you know your cycles well, and use in conjunction with natural family planning.

As a method alone it is risky (although not substantially more so than the diaphragm for example)

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 24/06/2019 13:33

Yanbu. But I've long since given up trying to understand otherwise intelligent people's lack of contraception use, and subsequent surprise at being pregnant. SO many of my friends have been accidentally pregnant, and it turns out they didn't use any method at all to avoid getting pregnant Hmm

TeaForTheWin · 24/06/2019 13:39

Lol yeah, it isn't a method of contraception. But if you genuinely have to explain that to an adult in this day and age...then they probably don't have the brain capacity to understand anyway.

Pomgirl · 24/06/2019 13:41

Pull out feels like it would ruin the moment for me, even if it worked!

JacquesHammer · 24/06/2019 13:41

Just a point to this, when I went to the GP to discuss going on the pill, he actually suggested it wasn't necessary because I'm infertile...I had to make an appointment with a different GP to get it prescribed.

RomanyQueen · 24/06/2019 13:41

we used it as a form of contraception but fully understood it might not work.
We ended up 9 years between dc, just doing this.

TremblingFanjo · 24/06/2019 14:31

There are two kids in my DS's class that are the product of this. That's two out of 30 whose mothers volunteered the information Grin

LittleMermaidRose · 24/06/2019 14:35

11+ years of using this method and it's worked for me just fine!

codemonkey · 24/06/2019 14:35

I remember the previous thread. The first post was a link demonstrating how effective it is. From an American organisation that supposedly gives impartial advice but is affiliated with pro-lifers.

People need to be very careful about checking the credentials of where their advice comes from.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 24/06/2019 14:42

It’s worked for us for the last 10 years since dc2 was born on the understanding that if it failed that’d be ok.

Previous to that we’d had unprotected sex five times in total and all five had resulted in pregnancies.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 24/06/2019 14:43

Never had any issues with it.

NewMoonSOS · 24/06/2019 14:44

It can be effective, depending on a number of factors, if done right. I have been doing it alongside the rhythm methods since I was about 20.

The woman needs to know her body and cycles very well - if she has irregular cycles or no idea when she ovulates it may not work. Men also need to know their bodies well, so they can pull out before it's too late! I have used the pull out method even on my most fertile days and never conceived. These methods was also used by my grandmother's generation and above, and she said it always worked for her!

BuildBuildings · 24/06/2019 14:45

Been using 14 years (same partner)no accidental or intentional pregnancies. But I wouldn't advocate for anyone else to use it. I'm happy with it though.

Birdie6 · 24/06/2019 14:46

My DD told me recently that she and her husband had been doing that since their last child was born, 8 years ago. I was astonished but she asserted that "it works for us" so who am I to say anything.

BuildBuildings · 24/06/2019 14:48

However my friend has a 7 year old as a result of this method. However they hadn't been together long. So I wonder if being really in tune with each other and the man being good at know when to pull out is important.

SignedUpJust4This · 24/06/2019 14:52

I know it's risky but we've used it nearly 20+ years with no accidents (can't take hormones) . Both times we wanted to get pregnant we were successful first time trying so we know we're playing with a loaded gun here. Husbands op is booked for next week though. Phew.

checkeredredshorts · 24/06/2019 14:55

Some people are just not intelligent at all stupid.

The facts are out there, it's luck that gets you through using that method.

Noodles4Me · 24/06/2019 14:57

On MN there seems to be a very high number of women whose pill "fails" too

CookPassBabtridge · 24/06/2019 15:00

We used it when we were in our early 20s.. fell pregnant twice. Learnt all about pre-cum..
