For getting red rage when changing toddlers nappy?

He used to be such a happy little baby when having his nappy changed but recently he’s been rolling and refusing to lay still.

I’ve noticed two finger bruises on his thighs and I’m certain it was me from trying to stop him rolling shit all over the place! I feel mixed emotions - rage for something that used to be so easy, horror for the bruising I’m obviously inflicting on my little boy and disappointment with confusion; how am I meant to do this differently? I don’t want to finding bruises regardless of why.

Does anyone have this problem? How do you stop them getting up too quickly/rolling it around?

I also hold both ankles in one hand and hold them up so he can't wriggle too much!

Yes and be super quick, don't faff and have everything ready beforehand.

Wipes might sting even the gentle ones, could contribute to extra wiggling.

Will never forget this-the absolute worst. Fought the urge to smack a bottom but gawd it was awful, the escaping, the flipping over and trying not to get poo everywhere and don’t mention trying to change nappies in car boots, back seats and toilet floors. I’m sure I cried
In hindsight-potty train ASAP. I second OH CRAP. I left it rather later as I was clueless but we were done in a week using that AMAZING book

Mine are/were monkeys and it made me so stressed. I have admitted defeat and the little one lies patiently holding my phone while watching Peppa Pig Blush so I can change a poo. That said, it only works 90% of the time and DC will wander off towards the end, given half the chance! I do wet ones standing up and with pull ups. You learn to be super quick but sometimes they are quicker.

Babies have always been wriggly at nappy changes, but you have all the new things with nappies today, as in disposable, and pull on ones.
Us oldies only had terry towelling nappies, and two big nappy pins ha ha.

I have still kept my four nappy pins from 1970 ish. two blue nappy pins, and two pink ones !!

My 2nd was like that. In the end I just gave up and changed her in the bathtub, and showered her off after. She's 8 now and still gives her little tushy a little shower after doing a number 2. :)

I coint to 10 really slowly in a silly voice. My baby knows by the time I get to 10 we are done and flips over to run away.

I've gone back to over the knee changes for my big toddler who refuses to cooperate with the nappy.

She doesn't like it but it is by far the easiest way, she gets changed the same way everytime regardless of where we are - over the knee, no ifs, no buts ;-)

DisappearingGirl · 09/07/2019 12:57

In answer to how to clean properly while standing - get them to put hands on floor!

littlemisscynical · 09/07/2019 13:13

I feel your pain. Gives me the rage too. It's the only time DS annoys me. Poo everywhere 🤦🏼‍♀️

likeacrow · 09/07/2019 13:16

Give him Peppa Pig (or whatever) to watch on your phone & use pull-ups. Feel your frustration!

caringcarer · 09/07/2019 13:21

If at home, take off soled nappy and pop child in bath. I know it does not help when you are out and about.

LynseyLou1982 · 09/07/2019 13:26

I have mastered the standing nappy change on my 16 month old DS as he will not lie down unless he's really tired or at nursery. We have a play pen in the dining room so I change him a tone end of that so if he makes a break for it he can't get too far.

Just to give you hope that it can get better... I had to do standing ones for a while but then suddenly my wriggly toddler became compliant and just let me crack on on the mat. Can’t remember the ages but I remember despairing at trying to contain her and the poo.
