So do you think that if we all stopped tipping pay rates would go up in the service industry?

DobbyMOO · 25/07/2007 16:53

So do we all tip supermarket staff then because their wages are usually as poor as waitresses/bar staff? If not, why not?

DobbyMOO · 25/07/2007 16:54

I generally tip in restaurants but not bars or taxis.

SweetyDarling · 25/07/2007 16:55

Because the difference btwn fabulous service from a check-out chick and ordinary service makes practically no differnce at all.
Great service at a restaurant can completely change the expereince.
Beyond that its just customary and considered polite.

I hate this idea that you have to tip. O only like to when I've been pleased with the service (although also have tipped hairdressers when I've hated my hair after ).

My family all went out for lunch one Xmas Eve and my Mum sdden;ly decided to pay for the whole thing. The rest of us gave big tips to the fab waitress and she got about £200 from us - she deserved it

theman · 25/07/2007 16:56

"and as a result have to live a lifestyle lower than they should"
sorry but how does recieving a wage for a job you agreed to equate to living a lifestyle lower than they should?
what exactly does the bar pay them to do then? there are a million and one services out there which we do not tip for.

"It is a company as a whole?? So the manager on £50,000 a year is no different to you than the guy serving your drink on £5.35 an hour? FFS."

of course it's a company as a whole. the company sells me a pint i pay them double what they paid for it so that they can pay the overheads to provide the staff and the bar i'm sitting in.

and as for providing a service, that's their job. why do you think you pay extra for a drink in a pub than an offlicence? because you are paying for the service

"A barman is not only paid to 'take orders, pour drinks and keep the bar in a presentable fashion.', they also have a hundred other things to do. The wages they are paid are based on many different things. When they serve you, which is the only part of their job you are probably aware of, they deserve a thank you, whether that be through a tip, or an actual 'thank you'"

i was listing the many things they are paid to do which someone suggested was worthy of a tip.you admit yourself that they are paid to serve, and when they do i always say thank you as i have manners similarly i say thank you to plumbers, checkout workers and taxi drivers but i don't tip them.
why would i stay at home, i would imagine that the pubs and restaurants are glad of my money and custom and it pays the wages of the bar men/other servers.

You're also paying for the glass, the cleaning, the rent on space taken up by the tables and chairs you sit on, the massive insurance etc required for a premesis that plays host to eat/drink-in customers and many other factors that an off-license doesn't have.

Many restauranteurs do their job because they truly love it. Food is NOT a high margin business, and if wages suddenly shot up many of your favourite haunts would simply close thier doors.

Furthermore, the owners of the restaurant deserve to make significantly more money then thier staff as they are the ones who take on all the risk of owning the business - many people put thier homes/arses on the line to open and grow their business.

theman · 25/07/2007 17:07

"Without those overheads theman, there would be no bar to sit in, or staff to run it"

and my exact point is that the high price they charge me covers these, including staff wages just like anyother business.you pay the asking price

I'd rather tip for good service than pay double for every drink/meal regardless of the standard of service.

Marne · 25/07/2007 17:13

I tip if i'm happy,
I gave the hairdresser a tip as she did a great job and had to stay late to finsh it.

I hardly ever tip for food as i'm never happy with the service [grin[

PinkMartini · 25/07/2007 17:17

Restuarants - yes (10-15%)

Hairdresser - sometimes (always the junior if I have some change) but my hair costs me shedloads so I'm not overly generour

Cabs - I round up to the next pound/50p

Barkeep - sometimes will tip em early to keep em keen. but not always.

Pizza delivery - maybe will round up the change as well.

but what I really want to know is where do you stand on your supermarket delivery guy?

My DB has been in the States and is horrified I don't as the delivery includes three flights of stairs. But I am PAYING for the delivery.

flowerybeanbag · 25/07/2007 17:20

wouldn't occur to me to tip supermarket delivery guy - I am paying a specific amount for delivery.
Do other people?

I always tip in a restaurant if I am happy with food and service. I tip the hairdresser but I hate doing this because I can't afford to even pay for the colour/cut so I begrudge giving any extra, I just feel mean if I don't because everyone else seems to.

flowerybeanbag · 25/07/2007 17:52

that's interesting, I would tip pizza etc, but don't see the need to tip supermarket delivery when I am already being charged a fiver on top of my shopping.

PenelopePitstops · 25/07/2007 19:17

theman you are being very narrowminded and not thinking about teh actual people who do the jobs. They have to do far more than just pur collect and clean your glass. They can easily have to stay in a bar for 2 hours after the bar shuts to clean up, deal with rude people, wipe lipstick off every glass and polish every wine glass. It might not sound like much but its a damnsight harder than a supermarket checkout.

LoveAngel · 25/07/2007 19:20

restaurants - yes unless shit service.
cabs - rarely, unless exceoptionally nice driver
everyone else - generally not

hate the American way

bookwormtailmum · 25/07/2007 19:32

I tip hairdressers and waiters/waitresses if the service is good. If not, I don't.

My dp refuses to tip anyone.
