Food = yes, usually 10% unless service has been properly terrible.
Hair / waxing etc = not as a rule - I have the same woman do all my waxing and pedicures and stuff and I usually give her a voucher for M&S for Xmas or something. Don't generally with hairdressers as I seem to get surly unfriendly ones

nomdeplume · 25/07/2007 15:14

it has been done before, lol @ thread deletion. If we only discussed new subjects on here it'd be a v quiet board !

Tortington · 25/07/2007 15:14

depends on the service.

at a bar ...not unless i am shitfaced and i will then say "get yersel a drink love"
OR

if the bar is packed then you offer a generous tip so the barkeep comes to serve you first next time

in a restaurant - depends on the food and the service - certainl not if they say that service is included.

hairdressers - yes if i like the cut.

taxi - no. robbing FUCKERS

MadMumsy · 25/07/2007 15:14

I tip waiters/waitresses (normally 10%) but not the hairdresser

AnnieOleHouseElf · 25/07/2007 15:14

yes, provided a reasonable service was provided. about 10%.
If it really was crap, the waiter's fault, then no tip. If it was crap cos of the kitchen, then a small tip.
Good service, good tip.
Feel really mean if FIL is paying and he won't leave anything. He has been know to take back change I've left on the table .

I used to be a waitress in my long gone youth. We notice if you come back!!

Mumpbump · 25/07/2007 15:17

If good service, yes; if not, no. Dh tips taxi drivers which I disagree with.

auntyspan · 25/07/2007 15:18

pmsl @ custy

bundle · 25/07/2007 15:19

why oh why do people tip hairdressers? surely it's the junior who washes your hair who needs the money?

woopsadaisy · 25/07/2007 15:21

the worse my hair cut the more i seem to tip (£20 for the worst one)
i think its cos i feel bad for saying 'oh, its lovely' whilst trying not to cry and run out of there as fast as i can

bundle · 25/07/2007 15:24

but you've already paid

lionheart · 25/07/2007 15:28

Probably 'cos you'll be going back and at their mercy the next time, bundle.

It's a little insurance policy.

bloody hell, if I had to shell out £20 each time I went for a hair cut just so they'd do their job properly well frankly I wouldn't bother.

bundle · 25/07/2007 15:32

i don't think so anniemac

theman · 25/07/2007 15:32

never understood the tipping mentality and would normally only ever do it if the sharing a meal with people i didn't know that well and my tip was 2/3 euro as it is easier than getting a headache of arguing over its merits. when with friends i have explained my policy so no arguments.

Totally agree Anniemac - hairdressers paid a pittance (likewise waiting staff) and rely on tips to bring themselves up to something resembling a decent wage. Love my hairdresser so give him a fiver, always tip 10% to 15% in restaurants unless waiting staff responsible for dreadful service. Usually give taxi drivers a small tip - 50p, sometimes coffee shop folks the same (espesh if I've inflicted my 'lively' DDs on them), rarely bar staff as rarely go to bars! Can't understand never tipping - really thought it was the norm. You get better service if you tip anywhere you are a regular I should thinl
