To ask what age...

... you stop supervising your child in the shower/bath and expect them to be able to wash themselves and wash and brush their hair properly without any help?

Dd is six and she washes her body and hair herself (unless she asks us to help) but we keep the bathroom door open and pop in and out, or sometimes she asks us to sit on the toilet lid to talk to her. Not sure what age we’d just let her get on with things!

She can’t brush her hair very well yet still as it’s quite long and curly and gets knotty so we mainly do that for her after she’s had a go.

I started sitting at the end of the bath when DD was about 7, making sure I supervised her washing her own hair and that all the shampoo was washed out.

Then when I was satisfied that she could do it, about 8 I think she was, I left her to it. She's 10 now and showers herself with no problems.

I still have to brush her hair though as it's really thick and curly!

I haven't supervised mine in the bath since around 5 or 6, but I do the hair wash and dry still as they have very long hair at 8 & 9.

DD8 showers alone but I put the shampoo in and check she's got it all out

Thanks all! Just having a bit of a disagreement with ex because he thinks I should have taught (recently turned) 7yo ds to wash and brush his shoulder length, very thick, curly hair on his own and won’t even help with detangling so he’s coming back from ex’s with tangled hair that’s sticky from not being rinsed properly but of course in ex’s eyes that’s my fault Hmm

Can’t he teach his son if he thinks he can learn?

My 6.5yo is just learning how to wash his hair, but he’s not very good at it and his hair is very short

Kungfupanda67 you’d think so but apparently not! DS knows what to do, he just doesn’t manage it well enough, particularly the rinsing and detangling
