Asking on behalf of dd who is flying tomorrow. She is just taking a carry on bag.

Her toiletries, all lovingly dispensed into small containers, fit into one small clear plastic zip lock bag.

But her make up does not fit in the same bag. Does this mean she can't take it? Sorry to be useless but I always take hold luggage and no make up on holiday, so it's not something I'm experienced in.

Tia.

Small resealable freezer bags are roughly the correct size

Brendatheblenda · 18/06/2019 20:57

@Nextphonewontbesamsung yes he was post 9/11 but the regulations re liquids came in later following the plot to bomb planes flying over the Atlantic. After 9/11 airlines secured their cockpits but the liquids rule came later

I’ve flown many times and never seen them allow anything more than one bag. It’s just like a sandwich bag they give out.

Mascara counts as a liquid as does Vaseline/lip stuff.
Dump the bottles/toothpaste and buy in boots. Makeup is more important and expensive!

Brendatheblenda · 18/06/2019 21:01

To answer a PP comment, checked luggage is different because it all gets scanned separately and if anything suspicious is detected your bag will be examined/ potentially destroyed. Sounds extreme but it happens!
Liquids in there are fine though because they can’t be accessed mid flight. Any bomb similar to the ones from the plot would need to be assembled and a charge/detonator attached which you couldn’t do during flight if in hold. I watch too many films/episodes of Air Crash Investigation haha!!

Havent read whole thread ....
For £7 you can send cabin into the hold at checkin and take what you want
You go "hands free" and that includes speedy boarding !
Bargain

She can throw out all those toiletries , and buy them at the other end of her flight. Only take things in your bag which you can't buy when you get there.

TheRedBarrows · 18/06/2019 21:05

Heathrow and Gatwick have free bags (but they are quite small). At Luton you have to pay for the bags.

If she buys toiletries airside, she may have to ditch them before bringing them home as the regulations are the same on the return flight.

She knows she cannot take nail scissors (unless very tiny) and various other sharp
Items, either?

TheRedBarrows · 18/06/2019 21:09

Sunscreen and insect repellent?

MsFanackerPants · 18/06/2019 21:10

Liquid restrictions came in in 2006 when the plan to blow up planes over the Atlanticwas discovered. The initial response was to only allow your purse/wallet and the clothes you were wearing into the cabin.
Richard Reid aka the shoe bomber was Dec 2001.

Brendatheblenda · 18/06/2019 21:18

@msfanackerpants so not quite the 10 years I had in my head, but still a good few years!

coffeeforone · 18/06/2019 21:19

Recent experience at gatwick is that they won't bat an eyelid if you take through two clear bags. I'm flying tomorrow and taking two clear bags - one for make up and contact lenses, the other for toiletries. It's not more than 1000ml in total.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 18/06/2019 21:29

You will get through security most probably with no bother.

It's not worth the hassle or the ball-ache of finding you've just lost half your toiletries. I've had my bags searched several times (maybe I just look guilty...) and I wouldn't want to lose things because they were hidden, then subsequently found and removed.

With a bit of forward planning it's quite do-able. Swap as many liquid items for non-liquid items as possible: wipes instead of cleanser, stick deodorant instead of spray or roll-on, shampoo bars instead of liquid. Decant stuff into smaller bottles - you don't need 500ml of shampoo for two weeks. And double things up: body lotion as moisturiser and handcream as well as body lotion, use shampoo instead of showergel etc.

For anything else, pick it up at the airport. Just make sure that if it's a liquid over 100ml they put it in a security sealed back if you've got connecting flights, else you risk it being removed at the next bag check.

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/06/2019 03:23

There seems to be a bit of a loophole if you use more than one tray to go through security. They probably don't always notice if you put liquid bags in more than one tray although they should.

Recently I ended up with four trays because the security person kept pulling them away from me when I had put one or two items in it. I had to ask to put the rest of my stuff in one of my existing trays because I was worried about collecting it all up again at the other side.

But you shouldn't rely on getting more than one bag through as they can and do take things off you, and then people would be moaning if something expensive had to go in the bin.

wink1970 · 19/06/2019 09:14

I'm repeating myself I know - and I don't work for Boots - but you can buy your toiletries online, show an order form airside & they hand over your pre-packed bag(s) of goodies.

It takes 10 minutes and it means you can choose your brands not just what's available at the airport. It doesn't count towards your security allowance or your carry-on allowance.

MinesaPinot · 19/06/2019 09:37

Late to this thread, so don't know if the OP's daughter is already on her way, but I flew with EasyJet and Ryanair last year hand luggage only. Liquids, including mascara and lipgloss were in my plastic zip up bag. I had a small make up bag which held powder foundation (Laura Geller), powder bronzer/blush, eye palette and eye liner pencils.

Separately I threw in Simple wipes and a bar of soap rather than shower gel which could just go loose in my bag.

Gth1234 · 19/06/2019 13:21

She can buy stuff when she gets there. Does she not have a packed suitcase?

Southwest12 · 19/06/2019 13:49

I’ve found it does vary by airport. Liverpool didn’t mind that the clear bag didn’t close properly whereas coming home from Belfast City they insisted it was closed and I had to chuck stuff out to get it to close properly.

BusterTheBulldog · 19/06/2019 13:57

I’ve found security much stricter past few times, I’ve been a bit lax about not putting mascara in clear bag and been pulled up on it. As others say just plan to buy some but from boots when through.

Caspianberg · 19/06/2019 14:10

The reason the clear bags have to be sealed closed is because they need them sealed to do the random liquid toxin tests or whatever they are. In a zipped clear bag, they will ask you to remove to another if your randomly picked to have liquids tested.

If someone has way more stuff that won't fit into the bag, they obviously arent travelling light, and therefore need to pay for hold luggage where they can take 101 items they like.

I travel often. My clear travel bag is very empty now tbh as take most things in non liquid form instead as easier

not liquid:
Solid soap
solid shampoo bar
eye shadow, eye pencil, lipstick
suncream lipbalm

in liquid bag:
roll on deodorant
mini suncream
mascara
mini decanted perfume
