To think xenogenders are a load of tosh?

I read this Quora answer and was bewildered to learn of all these new genders:

www.quora.com/Why-arent-xenogenders-taken-seriously

Seagender? Canisgender? Numbergender? Am I misunderstanding something here? Are these real? They sound like something invented by a self-dramatizing 14 year old with an interest in writing fantasy fiction and not enough ordinary social interaction.

I would genuinely, seriously like to know if you, or anyone you know, actually identifies as xenogender. How do these genders effect sexual encounters or anything whatsoever in that person's life? How can they tell that's their gender and not just a preference for a hobby, for instance? What's the point?

I don't want to be dismissive of new ideas and social changes, but from what I read here, not one of these would pass the oh-don't-be-so-silly test. AIBU?

YANBU it is a load of narcissistic bollocks.

carla1983 · 18/06/2019 03:09

"Aethergender—A gender that feels very wide, commanding, breathtaking and powerful."

LOL. I think someone was smoking drugs when these definitions were formulated.

mokapot · 18/06/2019 03:26

For the love of fuck... we are doomed as a species. Rightly so if we come up with twatish tosh like this

Pollydron · 18/06/2019 03:34

Not real and not recognised by proper mental health professionals. I believe it originated from someone’s stoned ramblings on Tumblr and has somehow wo its way into general society.

I once had a (cough) debate with an uber-woke person about this and ended up asking her to read the list without giggling. She couldn’t.

As you were OP.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/06/2019 03:43

Just a load of bullshit. The world has gone mad.

Alicewond · 18/06/2019 03:47

I personally see myself as caninegender, I do sniff a lot, I’m curious about people, and get excited about visitors! 😂

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/06/2019 04:37

"They sound like something invented by a self-dramatizing 14 year old with an interest in writing fantasy fiction and not enough ordinary social interaction."
I have long suspected that they were written by someone conducting a social experiment. They wrote some total guff, released it into the wokesphere, and are watching it run. They are documenting which colour of hair is attracted to which of the 76 'genders'. They are noting the reaction of the woke and the GC, and whether the woke being laughed at strengthens or weakens their professed belief in it. They will then submit their paper for per review and there will be many red faces, which will go nicely with the blue hair.

Perfect for the post Pokemon generation. Young people have to transform themselves into avatars with labeled identities.

jay55 · 18/06/2019 05:11

It's modern astrology, complete bollocks to most of us and taken vary seriously by a few.

JQBased · 18/06/2019 05:19

I clicked this thinking it was some kind of Alien film in the making...Turns out I wasn't that far from the truth Grin

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 18/06/2019 05:35

The sad thing is that, in the rush to be woke, some people will actually take this shit seriously.

There's no way anyone actually believes it though, come on.

I have no idea why young people are so desperate for a label. Is it because we live in a global society and their sense of identity is being eroded?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/06/2019 06:15

I can remember when one of the first questions you asked at a party was "What's your star sign?". I even spent good money (for a student) on having my astrological chart cast.

This is much the same but on steroids. It's all much more intense. We didn't believe that being an Aries or a Pisces was the most important thing about us. And we had only 12 categories to choose from - though I suppose it's a lot more if you allow for all the variants. But most people stuck to the 12.

I imagine they'll lose interest once they grow up. As long as they don't opt for hormones or surgery it's probably no big deal.

SleepyGuineaPig · 18/06/2019 06:23

It depends what you mean. They don’t have any kind of legal or medical recognition (and it’s very unlikely they ever would, for obvious reasons).

But that doesn’t mean that individuals don’t find it helpful to frame their own sense of identity in particular ways. Lots of young people in particular are just experimenting with their self-expression and sharing that expression on the internet.

I don’t think it’s sinister or a cause for concern. I know some people who base their understanding of themselves on their star sign and post memes / quotes etc about how they are ‘such a Virgo’ - just as daft, narcissistic and unfounded in reality as claiming to be seagender, imo, and ultimately just as harmless. In other words, if that’s how someone else wants to frame their experiences and talk about their life, they’re welcome to and I don’t see how it hurts anyone.

SleepyGuineaPig · 18/06/2019 06:26

I also think that people claiming we are doomed as a species because a few 17 year olds are claiming to be horsegender on their tumblr is somewhat lacking in perspective. People have always navel-gazed and found inventive ways of characterising their experiences, but we’ve managed to make it this far.

BertieBotts · 18/06/2019 06:29

They don't seem to understand what the definition of gender is. By definition it's based on sex-linked associations. Being "seagender" doesn't make sense in that context. (It's also why gender is bullshit in the first place, but if you are going to insist on it, it's male/female/neutral or masculine/feminine/neuter), it's not a generalised sense of self.

If you're going to make up a new thing fine but it doesn't work until it's widely recognised and how is anybody supposed to recognise it if you use a word that already means something else?

TakenForSlanted · 18/06/2019 06:33

I, for one, welcome our new, variedly gendered overlords.

That is, of course, presuming that from this point forward everybody acknowledges that I am and always have been chairwomanoftheboardgender and treats me accordingly. I explicitly include the payroll department at my work in my line of thinking.

Otherwise, of course, it's all pretty batshit.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 18/06/2019 06:35

Wtf did I just read? Only made it down to 30 something before giving up in disgust. Nothing wrong with having those feelings, but they're not genders.

BeanBag7 · 18/06/2019 06:35

I've never heard of any of them. If someone wants to identify as "numbergender" or ""aethergender" what would they want from others, which is different to someone who is male or female?

A lot of them seem to be attaching gender to an interest or feeling. Cant you be really interested in space or really like art without that also being your gender?

TakenForSlanted · 18/06/2019 06:38

Numbergender just wants to cozy up in a cell of one of your spreadsheets, surely? Grin

StealthPolarBear · 18/06/2019 06:49

Prawn you're absolutely right. No one talks about the moon rising in sagittarius and all that bollocks any more. This is just the new that.

StealthPolarBear · 18/06/2019 06:50

The difference is when this crap was around in the eighties and nineties it was perfectly acceptable to roll your eyes at them

Scoobydobbywho · 18/06/2019 07:38

I glad I'm not the only one who doesn't understand. I think you are either male, female or transitioning. Sorry if that isn't politically correct, but that's just how I feel.

Nyctophilia · 18/06/2019 07:56

I'm def caninegender, I can sniff out an arsehole better than anyone, love a good boning, and on occasion I'm partial to wearing a collar.....😂

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 07:57

Arf. It is very mememememe generation isn’t it? Where is the ‘we’? All very self centred and egocentric.

isabellerossignol · 18/06/2019 07:59

Utter narcissistic crap and hopefully they'll grow up and be embarrassed looking back. Like we all do when we realise that the feelings we had as teenagers didn't make us extra special, they just made us human.
