Not to have gone to doctor with this?

Fell over on boot on Friday crossing the road (wet ground) and twisted ankle. Didn’t feel too bad but was quite swollen when I woke up Saturday (first pic) and I couldn’t really put weight on it. Felt better Sunday and I can walk but not it’s looking very bruised.

I have twisted my ankle a zillion times and don’t think I’ve ever seen a doctor for it. However I’m now concerned it’s worse than it feels. AIBU to leave it alone or should I go to GP/hospital?

FYI I am a total health related worrier but trying to calm down a bit. Also am on blood thinners which may be making the bruising worse.

I had very similar looking foot, thought I had broken it as pain got worse and worse that night, ended up going to a and e as I couldn't walk on it and had heard a crack when I got up. Was just a sprain. The bruising and swelling lasted ages although I was able to walk on it the day after. Showed the dr a week later at my dc's appointment for something else and she said a sprain like that can take 8 weeks to go. Hopefully yours is a sprain and will only get better from now!

Thank you! I am hopeful is just a sprain but my sister broke her ankle recently and it looked similar.

Doesn't look bad. Get it seen. Non urgent GP, you can always cancel appointment if it heals itself

jimmyhill · 17/06/2019 23:39

Doesn't look good I mean

SgtFredColon · 17/06/2019 23:40

Great - actually have a GP appointment soon for something else so I can ask her then. Was just wondering if people would go to a&e

It's difficult to tell the difference betweenot a severe sprain and a break without an x-ray.

WisdomSearcher · 18/06/2019 00:09

A GP will just send you to A&E for an x-ray and if it's an injury obtained in the last two weeks you can just go along.

Only if it's over two weeks do you need a GP referral. It may well "just" be a sprain but it's worth getting it checked out rather than risk it healing incorrectly and having more issues further down the line.

PregnantSea · 18/06/2019 00:15

Even if it is a sprain you should still get it looked at. Looks like you need an x-ray. I'd go to the hospital in your position.

SgtFredColon · 18/06/2019 00:18

Thanks all. I see a lot of threads on here about wasting a&e resources but seems like it needs to be looked at.

Definitely needs an X-ray to check. I cracked a bone in my foot and barely had a mark on my skin to show for it. Six months later I had surgery on the bone.

In my experiences, a bad sprain is more painful than a break or fracture. You may even have damaged your Achilles tendon.

Get it checked, because if it is a break, there could be complications which are better fixed sooner.

Fingers crossed for you.

Tinysarah1985 · 18/06/2019 06:36

Ad you said that you're on blood thinners yes I would. Or is there an urgent care or walk in centre you can go to for them to xray it?

Etino · 18/06/2019 08:30

How did you get on @SgtFredColon?

SgtFredColon · 18/06/2019 09:56

Hi all, I went to the GP and she wasn’t concerned, said i didn’t need an X-ray or to go to hospital. She said it looks bad as I have been walking around on it all weekend. Said just to rest.
