To leave side roads clear in queuing traffic

I always do this but drivers behind me don’t seem to like it.
I’m mostly talking about junctions with traffic lights. Light turns green for me, I edge forward but if I can’t clear the junction due to queuing traffic ahead I’ll wait and keep the side road clear. I often get beeped at / someone nestling up my backside gesticulating if I do it.
Just wondering what other people do.
I’m only going off what I was taught 3 years ago as a learner.
Should I just ignore them or shall I move forward to effectively claim my space but potentially block someone from exiting or entering the side road ?

My favourite thing is when I’m the last car after a yellow box yet the car behinds me continues anyhow and then sits in the yellow box :) queue aggressive hand movements and beeping as somehow it’s my fault they’re in a yellow box.
I do enjoy moving the 10 inches or so forward and them still been stuck in the yellow box hehe

I keep side roads clear with one exception - when it's really heavy traffic on the main road and it's already taken us more than half a dozen changes of the lights to get where we have, but people are drawing up at the side road expecting to get straight in. I'd like to say it was logical, not adding yet more cars to the overcrowded main road, but it's more "It's taken me 17mins to get this far, I'm damned if you're going to swan in in front of me".

I always do - YANBU - I take quiet satisfaction in the idiotic frustration of wankers behind me!

I also wont go through traffic lights if I don't have room to clear them - drives them nuts!

Round here they beep you for not going into a yellow box - especially the one outside the bloody fire station!

You are doing the right thing, OP.
