Children’s car seats and mot!

Shootingstar1115 · 17/06/2019 16:39

I have always taken out the kids car seats before the mot. Along with anything in the boot (stroller, potty, box of spare clothes - we don’t seem to travel light).

Fortunately OH usually takes it in on day off so I can stay home with DC with the car seats so they aren’t needed that day.

Is it really necessary? DD’s new car seat is a complete pain to move!

I bought a car once where one year the MOT check hadn’t included a check of the front passenger seatbelt because a child’s car seat was left in the car.

So presumably it’s to check the seatbelts which is pretty important. I’d just remove them.

Mine recently passed with car seats in but I took everything g else out. It's rare but they can fail you for having too much stuff in your car, it's a hazard if you crash or roll after all

ThisMustBeMyDream · 17/06/2019 16:42

I've always left mine in. They just make a note unable to check as child seat fitted. Not sure why they can't check as it is isofix. Does anyone know?
Still passes its MOT.

CallieOMalley · 17/06/2019 16:43

We left both of ours in (plus buggy and kids bike in the boot) and they never made any mention of it 😕

IsAStormApporaching · 17/06/2019 16:44

We put our car in for an mot and forgot to take out the car seat.
The garage didn't take it out - maybe they where not allowed I don't know- and the wrote the one seatbelt was not checked.
They still passed the car- not sure if that was correct as they only check 4 of the 5 belts(our fault of course)

But we always take the seats out now. Just incase. It may just have been this garage I don't know.

MagicKingdom · 17/06/2019 16:45

I've never even thought to remove car seats from mine and my husband doesn't either.

Huggybear16 · 17/06/2019 16:45

Mine was left in.

It was marked as an advisory - could not test due to child seat.

If you dont care about the advisory, then leave it in. If you dont want an advisory, then take it out.

strawberrypenguin · 17/06/2019 16:45

You don't have to take them out but it does mean hey can't check the belt that is being used to secure them with.

HolesinTheSoles · 17/06/2019 16:45

I've never taken out the car seat out for MOT. I usually just waited in a cafe nearby or walked home if it was close. Fortunately the car has always passed.

TastingTheRainbow · 17/06/2019 16:47

I would take them out. I once took mine in and left the car seat in and the MOT said seatbelt not checked due to car seat, even though the car seat was isofixed in to a base and didn’t use the seatbelt so it could have been checked no problem! Take it out every time now.

TheBrockmans · 17/06/2019 16:49

I think it is because they may not be able to put it back in correctly and if they didn't strap the car seat back in then you might not think to check it before driving off. It will not fail because of it, obviously though do check for yourself that it is still secure.

megletthesecond · 17/06/2019 16:52

I always took mine out. No point making their job more fiddly.

babysharkah · 17/06/2019 16:54

Always take them out. What have you got that is difficult?!

CallieOMalley · 17/06/2019 16:56

I have a Cybex Sirona and it is an absolute pain to get in and out

SusannahD · 17/06/2019 16:57

No need to take them out, it won’t fail, just be an advisory

stucknoue · 17/06/2019 16:58

I never took mine out

PottyPotterer · 17/06/2019 17:00

Always took them out, you want to be sure that the seatbelt securing your child's seat is in good working order surely?

megletthesecond · 17/06/2019 18:02

Exactly potty! You can have a great car seat but it's only as good as the belt holding it in.

CallieOMalley · 17/06/2019 18:26

Unless you have an isofix Confused

fiydwi · 17/06/2019 18:33

I never take mine out and don’t have probs with MOTs

Shootingstar1115 · 17/06/2019 19:43

Thanks all. I will take them out (as I have done previous years). I’ve never taken the car myself (OH usually takes it to the garage a few miles away)

It’s not difficult to take out but annoying to put back in but I’ve taken them both out ready for the morning 😀

What 'checks' do you think the garage do ? They just click the seatbelt in nothing more
