He has autism and his timekeeping is nonexistent, he is unintentionally rude to people, he can’t work technology.

Is there anything out there for him? Sad

I'm 28 and have never had a job- I have ASD and MH issues. Reading this thread has given me some ideas, although a lot i still would really struggle with as i cant multi-task, cant drive, have bad sensory issues with sound/lights, cant be around people much etc. I did think about working in a library but they want experience and lots of multi tasking involved and short notice to cover at other libraries. I'm considering doing something from home- maybe a little ebay business, but its likely not enough to survive on and i have rent to pay etc as i live alone.

Its very difficult, i would love to earn my own money and feel a sense of freedom and not have to worry about PIP and some spiteful twat reporting me because they saw me out and about etc. I just wish i didn't have autism or MH issues.

alexx321 · 18/06/2019 10:40

freeted is correct

He doesn’t acknowledge or admit he has autism.

The watch thing is just a non starter. He wouldn’t wear one and if I gave him one he would lose it!

He really struggles getting out of bed and with any sort of timekeeping ... he has worked before but this has been a huge issue.

The rudeness isn’t ‘banter’ and to be honest it is really unhelpful. It is things like walking away when someone is in mid sentence, being too friendly and saying things like ‘oh that skirt really suits you, you have really nice legs’ which make him sound creepy, inappropriate topics of conversation, speaking too loudly.

If he likes history, would an old fashioned pocket watch tempt him?

A loud factory environment where you can't really talk to your colleagues? I've worked with someone who sounds a bit similar wrt inappropriate comments. He had a different shift time to every one else, I never asked or thought about why.

Toby would a uni or (private?) school library have the same requirements for covering other libraries?

Tobythecat · 18/06/2019 11:05

Rainbow I've just seen one for a local university library but again, there seems to be a lot of multi-tasking involved. I just get flustered/overwhelmed easily is i find it difficult to process things.

thenightsky · 18/06/2019 11:20

Yep... that's my son too. In fact he comes across as arrogant. The one interview he did manage to get he failed badly due to giving one word answers. He is VERY economical with words and unable to elaborate at all.

RainbowOfChaos · 18/06/2019 11:20

Toby don't write it off. Give yourself a chance! Be honest with them as there may be ways around the "multi" part of multi tasking. Could you do different tasks on different days. Or in set time periods. 50 minutes, then switch task. (I have no clue what you're expected to do, but please don't give up without even applying)

Fallofrain · 18/06/2019 11:36

toby how about seeing if their are any volunteer roles there? It might let you see wherever it would be right for you. If i hadnt of volunteered i would have never of thought i could do the job im doing now, but when i did volunteer i realised that actually i was actually able to do it and could apply

Fallofrain · 18/06/2019 11:36

alexx what would he like to do?

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 18/06/2019 11:38

So not a single one of these many many suggestions are any help at all? People have given their time to make tailored suggestions and share their experiences. There are lengthy posts from people in similar situations, people who have even suggested you PM them and they will try and assist you.

Is not a single one of these suggestions or idea worth exploring? Surely you haven't tried or discounted every single suggestion already.

People have also suggested if you can share what strengths he has they can be more specific?

I'm personally aware of the issues of employment for DC with SN/disabilities (apologies as this is such a broad term I know!) and I've actually found this thread very useful and think people have been kind to offer this advice.

lunicorn · 18/06/2019 12:02

This is one of the most useful threads I've seen on here in a long time. Any leads you want follow up OP?

SunshineSpring · 18/06/2019 12:04

What area is his college course in? And what is preventing him completing it?

Thinking along the science route, the microscopist I know spends much of his day on his own in a dark room. There are several monitoring jobs in factories where you need to watch for alarms and react - is this too technical?
I'd explore the science routes bit.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 18/06/2019 12:59

If he doesn't acknowledge his issues does he have an actual diagnosis? Although it seems pointless asking as you're not answering anything 🤷🏼‍♀️
Hopefully others will have benefitted from the time and effort posters have put in even if you've dismissed everything.

DifficultSituation19 · 18/06/2019 13:03

I have ASD and it’s always been a complete disaster whenever I’ve had a job. I’m unemployable, although I do have a first class degree! The only thing that has worked for me is working for for myself running an online business (selling). I don’t earn a fortune but it’s better than nothing.

Lougle · 18/06/2019 13:07

These things are not necessarily the barrier that they sound to be, though. My brother is very reticent and doesn't 'talk the talk'. He is a computer programmer, and was asked to write some code to achieve a goal as part of an interview. Apparently, he leant back in his chair, then took the paper and pen, writing one line of code, then handed it back. The code was correct, on testing, and he was told later that many of the other candidates had written half a page of code. He got the job because he could do it, simple as that.

He doesn't need to acknowledge his autism. He just needs someone to help him to identify his 'non,-negotiables' (e.g a late start) and to work out what he needs to succeed.

Yes, he has a diagnosis. I wasn’t aware I had omitted to answer anything - it’s hard because I’m not sure what’s a question and what’s a criticism.

If you contact an autism charity they usually have a team who help to get autistic people into employment

Werrsy · 18/06/2019 13:15

When you say he can't work with technology as a Pp asked, is he OK with the basics like word, Internet use etc or just no computers at all? What's his course in?

alexx321 · 18/06/2019 13:17

Yes but he wouldn’t engage with them Trex, this is the difficulty Sad

He could use word at a very basic level as in typing - he wouldn’t really know how to open or save a document.

My brother has similar challenges and I understand that it’s not as easy as ‘teaching’ time keeping or buying a watch!

It took a lot of trial and error but he is now established in his desk based job. A predictable daily routine helped. He was not tech savvy but ended up in a tech based role which is very task oriented with a ticketing system which essentially means that someone else is coordinating your workload and deadlines. Good luck it will all fall into place one day!
