No idea Rory Stewart had such a cool backstory

Have a look at these links from 15-20 years ago - wish he was my mp - and I don’t even vote conservative.

big He is not there to actually work he is just pure decoration. I very much agree that he would never like to get his hands dirty in any way with the actual public and the people, heaven forbid, unless he is doing his down with the kids routine for the cameras, and then he is all shark smiles and insincerity.

Everanewbie · 17/06/2019 13:37

I think he has an excellent record as a diplomat in Iraq, reforming prisons within the constraints of his brief, and had a great record as environment minister, being instrumental in the plastic bag charge.

I understand that not everyone buys in to the economic policies adopted over the past 9 years. But I feel that Rory has a wide range of experience and is the kind of diplomatic and sensible leader that the country needs.

EleanorReally · 17/06/2019 13:37

He bought in the bag charge, i think

Littlekittystops · 17/06/2019 13:40

[Heave]

Just no, on every level.

AnthonyCrowley · 17/06/2019 13:40

What does Florence of belgravia mean?

AnthonyCrowley · 17/06/2019 13:41

Oh is it a Lawrence of Arabia pun?

JinglingHellsBells · 17/06/2019 13:41

Regardless of his back story, is he ill?

I have never seen a man of his age look so old and gaunt. His face looks hollow and he's tiny when you see him next to his wife.

Has he had some illness or something in the past as a child that has affected his appearance? I'm being serious, not bitchy.

Littlekittystops · 17/06/2019 13:42

dplomatic and sensible leader the same guy that launches from a circus tent with a crooked tie and smoked opium. You call this guy sensible? Really.

BigSexyCrimeUnit · 17/06/2019 13:42

Absolutely Peepmasters. He is very disingenuous. Most of us haven't had the family funds and contacts to prat around walking in dangerous countries for no apparent reason. We're too busy having to earn a living and trying to care for our relatives who are having to access our money-starved public services.

TheFrendo · 17/06/2019 13:42

jenthelibrarian,

I have no idea about his sexuality, are you trying to shame him?

Littlekittystops · 17/06/2019 13:43

jingling Maybe its the opium

Breathlessness · 17/06/2019 13:43

A play on Lawrence of Arabia?

I am not a Tory so I don’t have a horse in this race but it would be amusing to have Rory Stewart as PM just to see him meeting Trump - Rory Stewart has really big hands!

missbattenburg · 17/06/2019 13:44

Yep. One look at his voting record is enough to convince me that despite a promising exterior, his veins still ran blue as much as the rest of them.

Votes for austerity, removing money from people who need it most, giving tax breaks to people who need it least, for mass surveillance and the collection of personal data, for selling off nature spots, for allowing train tickets prise to rocket, etc etc.

I don't care how cool his backstory might sound. He is clearly from the same mould as the rest.

EleanorReally · 17/06/2019 13:44

I think he seems intelligent, and not slimey like Hunt.

EleanorReally · 17/06/2019 13:45

this is the tory party, what do you expect?

StayAChild · 17/06/2019 13:46

Rod Stewart for PM is the new 'cancel the cheque'.

Why don't you vote OP? Unless you are prohibited from doing so, how do you justify that?

Go back and read the OP properly this time. :)

Whatafustercluck · 17/06/2019 13:49

Best of a best bunch, definitely. A jolly nice (privately educated) chap, probably. A moderate Tory? Possibly - although his voting record doesn't appear to validate this. When it comes down to it, I'd prefer him to BoJo and I think the majority of the public would agree. Which is exactly why he won't be voted Leader. The wealthy Tory supporters have too much to gain from Boris's taxation bribe.

Fairylea · 17/06/2019 13:50

I don’t like him. Lots of reasons but really hated it this morning when she prattled on about getting xxx disabled people back into work. Yeah that’s great if they can and want to work but the Tory party has been terrible for disabled people - it’s made so many people believe disabled people are scoungers and made it harder than ever to claim pip etc when the reality is very few such claims are bogus. They should be ashamed. I don’t think he should be sitting there so smug about it all.

Everanewbie · 17/06/2019 13:50

I would imagine he would freely admit he is privileged. But in my book he hasn't dined out on that. He served in the army, traveled the not so nice bits, and took time to understand the peoples and history. If I was him i would have taken a nice little cushy job in the city. I can't dislike him because he had more money growing up than me, same as I can't dislike someone because they had less money than me. I can't see how a good education precludes him from being PM.

The opium thing doesn't sound great, but the same people critising him for that would have a pop at him if he passed the pipe on without a drag, calling him boring or even out of touch. Half the bloody house has owned up to something or other drugs related.

justasking111 · 17/06/2019 13:50

Well on a political forum they all say he came across as a Uriah Heep character. Not seen it myself.

pepperpot99 · 17/06/2019 13:52

I note that the Torygraph compares him to Lord Byron several times; everyone knows Byron was an self indulgent opium raddled narcissist who scorned the proletariat as he played with his syrupy verse. It's hardly a compliment Hmm.

hammie46i · 17/06/2019 13:53

He has a face only a mother could love. I hope he doesn't get elected leader firstly because he's a remainer and secondly, I don't want to see that ugly mug in the papers every day

AnthonyCrowley · 17/06/2019 13:55

I can't say roderick without putting on a Michael Palin in the life of Brian accent. Smile

Saavhi · 17/06/2019 13:56

He calls his mother "mummy".
